Argh, Sorry, not you.
I mean @DumboLives

The unsinkable claim was a marketing ploy, not based on engineering. any shipbuilder would be an idiot for claiming a ship was unsinkable.

In fairness to the poster they posted before we knew the US Navy had heard the implosion, so we weren't being fed the whole story (for good resson). It did seem odd perhaps that the ROV found debris so quickly after days of searches by other bits of kit- but makes sense that they had a narrower area and could find it quickly as soon as they had the right equipment.

It’s not odd. This was of the first searches of the sea bed, once they had managed to get a ROV down there. It was sent to search the last known location of the Titan, so not surprising it then found something quite quickly.

Willmafrockfit · 23/06/2023 07:11

they may have picked up on the implosion but didnt know for sure at the time that's what it was, in hindsight they know

Yikesno · 23/06/2023 07:12

The 2 experienced ones (CEO and French explorer) seem to have known and understood the risks and if they wanted to go and risk their own lives being explorers for the advancement of science, that's fine in my book. But to take paying passengers including a reportedly terrified teenager ffs is completely immoral and utterly reprehensible. The French explorer was apparently very worried before this trip and "not looking forward to it." I wonder whether he revealed his concerns to the others before they got on the sub? The CEO seems to have been quite cavalier about safety to say the least.

People sign waivers about the risk of death quite frequently so dont think they have a big effect on warning people anymore - I've signed them for everything from having surgery to going scuba diving. I guess they've become normalised plus you'd think booking a tour through a tour guide is going to have been through rigorous safety checks.

Agree - even without the navy info, the RO would probably have started around the same area

I know it's not odd, but I can see why to someone who doesn't know much about the search and the equipment would find it so after many days of searching. It didn't seem conspiracy theory to me just someone confused as to how that's possible. I don't need it explaining though thank you.

3luckystars · 23/06/2023 07:14

Just regarding the distress signal discussed earlier, (every 30 minutes) would that be on the hour and the half hour or at random times every 30 minutes?
I hope the way I wrote that question makes sense.

I think every half hour, you are meant to bang very loudly for 3 mins.

I don’t know why this baffles people so much?? The US Navy literally use Xbox controllers!

A fact that the OP and others are happy to ignore in the interests of upping the drama. I'm loving the idea of "certification". By whom, exactly. Clearly not the US navy then.

They didn't stick around long enough to read 5 threads on this subject and get educated on why an implosion is likely and what actually happened, did they? Like all good conspiracy theorists they just drop their ill thought through rubbish and run. I think you're being too kind.

oakleaffy · 23/06/2023 02:15

That is absolutely terrible.
there was an American Tarot reader, a young man on you tube who a couple of days ago said ''Someone as soon as they got in the water freaked out....I can see one person freaking out..one person panicked..and it's almost immediate''

He says ''A piece broke off and it flooded inside''..

All very strange.

So seeing your story about the young man being terrified..It's very sad indeed.

And you're giving some weight to this absolute nonsense.

Picoloangel · 23/06/2023 07:24

@JudgeJ

I didn’t refer to him as a child. I said I cannot imagine taking my child on such a mission. As a parent, your offspring are your “children” irrespective of their ages. If it makes you feel better I’ll correct my post and say “my teenager” or “my offspring”

Whether or not he felt worried about going or was excited about it, he was not in the same category as the mature men on board who were self confessed thrill seekers. I was simply making the point that at 19, whilst an adult, it is likely that he didn’t appreciate the risk in the same way.

I followed this story, like others, in the hope that all would be found alive and rescued. I suspect it captured people’s attention because of the parallels with the Titanic itself. This thread has now descended into unpleasant bickering. I’m leaving it now.

As others have said thank you to the previous posters who have informed us all with their knowledge and experiences. There are some deeply impressive and bright people on MN!

Jesus. Is that really where we are now as a society?

It's not the first or the fifteenth post to have this callous, sneering approach. Sometimes people can't resist showing you who they really are.

DisgustedOfTidmouth · 23/06/2023 07:25

the number of lifeboats seems ridiculous and reckless to us now but it was in line with maritime regulations att the time

It actually exceeded the legal requirements - it was only required to have 16. It had 20.

I read it that they found it odd that debris had been located so quickly after days of the media saying about the searches being conducted and how it was such an epically hard mission (which it was). To someone who doesn't know much about all of this I think that stacks. I work in marine engineering and stuff I think seems obvious often my friends are like wtf so I realise to many it's a different world, understandably.

It doesn't really matter anyway does it!

Yes, I know it was a marketing ploy. But the bulkheads to divide the hull into sections were a deliberate safety feature -designed so that if the ship hit an iceberg, only one section would be compromised and the ship would remain afloat. In reality, of course, that didn’t work.

Boomshock · 23/06/2023 04:24

Thank you @WiddlinDiddlin and @BadNomad

Physics is not my strong point,
So say for example on the actual Titanic, when water rushed in and destroyed things and smashed glass etc would that technically have been considered an implosion too?

2 different scenarios. The Titanic was on the surface, so water will not have rushed in at the same speed or force.

Horrible reading about what the aunt has come out with. If this is true, I can't comprehend the guilt the mother must be feeling.

Why would you go to the press with those comments? What a horrible thing to do.

cakeorwine · 23/06/2023 07:36

People talking about the ethics of seeing the Titanic.

I've done scuba diving in the past and have dived on WW1 and WW2 wrecks. I have no doubt that people died on them but they aren't designated as mass graves.

Is that unethical?

Americano75 · 23/06/2023 07:37

@Picoloangel ditto this, it's being really informative.

lljkk · 23/06/2023 07:39

I'm rather annoyed by James Cameron encouraging conspiracy theories, implying "they knew" but "the engaged in a search and rescue farce anyway." Don't think he understands science at all.

I'm also impressed by how invested so many people are in all this. Like it's a really important matter. So many opinions.
