How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

so were they sat on the seabed for days making the banging sound, and then they imploded? Could the act of banging have caused the implosion?

No!!!!!!! Read the thread.

No!

It happened when they disappeared

On the way down. They never arrived

No, they said that the debris field is constant with the implosion occurring in the water column - it never reached the ocean floor.

It’s a very clear, informative and compassionate briefing from the US Coast Guard. Condolences to the bereaved families.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 22/06/2023 20:21

*consistant

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:22

Indeed.

As soon as they said it was a Rear Admiral about to speak, I think that removed any doubt about how bad the news was about to be.

Prospects for recovery of remains...

Inhospitable environment
Catastrophic event
No newer for prospects of recovery

They'll probably try it. If there is anything to find left.

After that malaysia aircraft was shot down above Ukraine years ago I told DH if I ever die catastrophically and it's dangerous to get my body then just leave me there. That will just be my grave. I wouldn't want anyone in danger just to retrieve a body that is of no more use to me.

Are we allowed to say Rest in Peace yet? I hope their end was quick. I'm so sorry for the mother of the teenager. This is just a nightmare.

Just listened to the coast guard. They did a great job

Very sad

They certainly did. Especially when you consider that the main wreckage of MH 370, a huge Boeing 777, was never found.

Exactly what I thought.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:22

Given they weren't found safe, it's the best that could be hoped for.

I agree. The press conferences have been clear throughout.

So sad for the families.

I wondered this. Allegedly no testing between missions means that there may have been issues with integrity in the hull that no-one knew about. Banging on one part may have made it turn catastrophic.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 20:23

There won't be any remains left to recover, they were wise to not answer really but I'd hope that the families have been told the truth.

Yes, I thought it was dignified and the compassion came across very clearly. They did an amazing job to find an answer for the families, and will continue to try to find more information.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 20:24

And no they wouldn't have been on the seabed, the bouys were put into the water 24 hours after it went in and they wouldn't have picked up on it so suggestion is it happened prior to that time frame.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 20:25

Would have picked*

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:25

@Creepyrosemary no way. He was clear, without being explicit, that there is nothing to recover.

Debris will be documented but that's about it.

There's only dense materials that can have survived. We aren't dense.

Locutus2000 · 22/06/2023 20:26

The sea lions have arrived. Night all.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 20:26

No @HyperionWarbonnet

It was over before there was any opportunity of banging on anything b

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/06/2023 20:26

The US Rear Admiral who just gave that press conference puts me in mind of Prof Chris Whitty 3 years ago; someone at the top of their field technically, thrust into the limelight by dreadful circumstances, delivering very hard news compassionately.

RIP to the passengers and crew, condolences to their loved ones.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 22/06/2023 20:26

Although the families will have been through absolute unimaginable pain and trauma over the past few days imagining their loved ones were still alive and suffering, one small consolation is that they do not have to live with that knowledge now it's been pretty much confirmed that their deaths would have been pretty instantaneous.

shepherdlincoln · 22/06/2023 20:26

I thought people had said upthread or possibly on the earlier ones, that the reason they were thinking it hadn't imploded on Sunday was because there are always devices keeping an eye so to speak? I remember someone linked a Wikipedia page. If the military etc are always generally listening how didn't it get picked up on Sunday that there was essentially a small bomb underwater??

Still very curious what the banging was now. Did the US coastguard confirm it was an SOS? Didn't they say it was too exact to be random ocean noises??

Coffeelotsofcoffee · 22/06/2023 20:26

I'm know there were a number of people on board but I just feel so sad for the father and son. I cant stop think about the mum and sister . So incredibly sad

noodlezoodle · 22/06/2023 20:27

@Locutus2000 I saw you posted earlier about SOSUS. Do you think the Navy will be able to confirm the time the vessel was lost, or would this not be something that they'd get involved in?
