Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

You must have a superb view from up there on your high horse @hindere

Your virtue signalling is considerably more offensive - and very patronising to the bereaved families - than any condolences offered on here.

Things have changed since this morning

But if people want to report they’ve let everyone know which is great

You all are reporting and sniping, it says on sky news I'm watching now that the landing frame and rear cover of sub has been found

I've seen that too! ☹️

Really fucking weird. Deranged even.

justgettingthroughtheday · 22/06/2023 18:32

@hindere it has been confirmed that the debris field is debris from the sub. I'm sorry but that does mean that they are gone. There is no knowing if they will ever find the hull. Reporting people for saying RIP is just ridiculous at this point.

placemats · 22/06/2023 18:33

hindere · 22/06/2023 18:29

I fail to see that, and I think you've missed the point.
It's disrespectful to have posted 'RIP' before any deaths have been officially announced. We've had to ask people to stop that since this morning.

A few of us have reported now in any case.

It's this nonsense that propels the 'hope they are found alive' frenzy when the outcome is very likely death.

Mochudubh · 22/06/2023 18:33

BBC just reporting nature of debris now. It says something that I can read news on Mumsnet half an hour before the BBC.

Without being insensitive and flippant, there will be resources poured into this not just for the families sake but because its really useful research that wouldn't usually be able to be conducted. Hope that doesn't offend anyone by viewing it this way, I'm sure as most on board were explorers they'd want at least something to come out of all of this.

Your post did not come across as flippant or insensitive. Rather, it was pragmatic and raised some valid points about what lessons might be learned.

(I have enjoyed reading your posts as they are sensible and well-written.)

I've just read that too. It's so sad, I was hoping they would be found alive but it looks like they have been dead since Sunday 😞

Always good to wait for official confirmation rather than rely on social media.

The morality police.

They have found the rear tail with the logo on, and the landing frame. Former doesn't matter, the frame is structural.

Oh...that picture clearly shows that if the rear tail has been found then the hull/body of sub has been breached for certain.

That's basically what the guy on sky news said. If those pieces have been found then something catastrophic has happened.

"RIP to those who have lost their lives on the Titan .,🖤"

Yes. @Simplestead

Look, that's your post above. Distasteful and mawkish. Can't you wait for the official announcement?

Provided a post does not break MN guidelines, people can post what they like.

BBC just reporting nature of debris now. It says something that I can read news on Mumsnet half an hour before the BBC.

You can read it on MN because the interviewee on Sky released the information before it was supposed to be made public. The BBC was waiting to release when the US Coastguard deemed appropriate.

I know the Sky interviewee was a friend to some of the people on the sub but it was hugely inappropriate that he announced the nature of the debris when the coast guard obviously wanted to ensure all family were informed before officially releasing the information.

Sky news were just live on YouTube confirming it was the frame and pointy bit.

I think it's safe to assume after this complete and utter nightmare no more tourist exhibitions will be happening ever again. At one point it would have been acceptable for experts to dive down there for scientific research but even that's probably a no go now, I mean what else is there to know? They say in 30/40 years there'll be nothing left of it anyway.

I admit I am fascinated by Titanic and would have LOVED to see the wreckage from a respectful distance if I'd been wealthy and had guaranteed safety.

But let's just leave it alone now.

I doubt this will be the last manned exploration of the titanic. There have been many many successful dives. Many more than we have heard about in the past few days and even more if you look at deep sea missions across the globe.
What I suspect will happen is much more rigorous testing and research before submersibles are allowed to descend. I would also not be supposed if there became an authority to oversea submersibles and the testing of them.

Space exploration hasn't stopped because of previous fatalities. But with each incident new rules and procedures have come into play to prevent a repeat of previous incidents.

Can't disagree with that!

StGuffersOfTheVillage · 22/06/2023 18:38

Honestly arguing the toss doesn't help. Just ignore what irritates you. Life is calmer that way.

Indeed!

placemats · 22/06/2023 18:39

My first husband's father worked in Harland and Wolff as a draughtsman. He's seen the archives of the Titanic plans and spoke often of the skill and artistry of each person who worked on that ship. However, the ship sank partially because of cost cuttings to the rivets and the steel used. These savings fractured what should have been a ship to last a generation.
