Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

Connecticut 13,000 sq km, so 1/10 size of England (130,000 sq km)

Equivalent to the size of Wales. And the Falkland Islands if you want another British metric.

I wonder if they'll be able to study the debris and figure out exactly what happened - and when. It does seem likely it imploded and hopefully no one suffered. The families will be able to get closure. I think now it's probably appropriate to day R.I.P.

Better to wait until it's officially announced.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 22/06/2023 17:19

Does anyone know if there is a black box (or something the like) in the vessel, that would store conversations on board and offer some insight into what went on down there, should it be recovered?

Startyabastard · 22/06/2023 17:19

I was thinking there should have been a very strong tether, like a very strong metal chain, but that could have got in the way of it going into the wreckage of the Titanic and/or damaged the wreckage if it hit against it (guessing).
What does anyone else think about that?

Atticus999 · 22/06/2023 17:20

The debris field was found by an ROV at the bottom of the ocean near the titanic wreck , is that correct? It’s not floating around on the surface ?

Never underestimate the will of humans to survive. With hypothermia and/or sedation, they could extend their oxygen supplies to another day or so.

Correct. Not on the surface.

UPDATE:

Debris of sub found.

towing a 2.5 mile plus long chain would all but eliminate their ability to maneuver and slow them down so much as to eliminate any time on station, so not really an option for what it is/is used for.

This is being reported on CNN. Reporter saying that feeling is that this information would not have been released if they thought it was part of a previously established debris field. They have not said where the debris field is relative to the Titanic itself.

USCG update at 3 pm EDT.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:25

So does that mean the banging was completely unrelated?

AcrossthePond55 · 22/06/2023 17:25

And no confirmation that it IS the Titan. Per CNN

broadbezb · 22/06/2023 17:25

The US Coast Guard have said a debris field was discovered within the search area by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) near the Titanic wreck.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:26

Yeh it doesn't seem conclusive that it's the titan. Just A debris field found not The debris of the titan

broadbezb · 22/06/2023 17:26

From The Guardian

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:27

So are they saying or insinuating the debris is the titan?
Its all worded poorly.

gemstoneju · 22/06/2023 17:27

You sent me down a rabbit hole, @GwinCoch! I've just remembered seeing a BBC science show where that finding was discredited, yes, it is similar to this. Apparently they now think the 'WOW' signal came from a large comet.

Kinsters · 22/06/2023 17:27

If the implosion happened later on (ie when the recovery operation had begun) you'd imagine the sonar listening devices would definitely have picked it up. It's a bit surprising no military listening devices picked it up, if indeed it did implode when communications were lost.

They wouldn't announce finding debris if they didn't think it relevant.

I doubt it. The photos I've seen looked like the inside of a pringles tube.

Where does it say debris of the sub?
It says debris field found.

L13422 · 22/06/2023 17:28

Would it have imploded immediately or has it imploded because it’s been stuck at the bottom for a long period of time?

AcrossthePond55 · 22/06/2023 17:28

Update: USCG saying debris field is 'near the Titanic'

CNN
