How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

I assume debris that looks like it could belong to something fresh down there rather than the wreck of the titanic or such.

It’s basically an area of water containing items that have no explanation for being present in the sea, like when a plane goes down and an aileron pops up.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/06/2023 17:02

"Debris" is good news, relatively speaking. It should mean the whole thing exploded/imploded and everyone died quickly.

placemats · 22/06/2023 17:02

The debris field between the two parts of the Titanic is about five miles across. The Titanic sunk in two parts.

SOBplus · 22/06/2023 17:03

banging could easily be the survivors (hoped), or it could easily be items on titanic wreck moving in currents. Why wasn't it heard? its well inside the sonar lines typically deployed and no one was specifically listening for an implosion sound for the hours between launch and notice of missing. Can they go back and check for a sound signature that looks like implosion? yes but the ocean is a noisy place, it will take lots of time for not much return, so low priority for now.

NotBotheredAnymore · 22/06/2023 17:03

Ooof, I hope it was quick. Poor beggars 😥

Snowpatrolling · 22/06/2023 17:04

Worriedmum107 · 22/06/2023 16:59

I read that if it had imploded the noise would have been huge and heard from mikes away by various sonar devices. If there is debris, does that not mean it imploded? Why wasn't it heard? And what were the banging noises every 30 minutes?

The company didn’t report the sub missing for 8 hours so they weren’t even looking for it at that point.

placemats · 22/06/2023 17:04

So obviously the debris is new and that is very much conclusive.

Cas112 · 22/06/2023 17:04

DontGoBreakingMyHeart · 22/06/2023 16:38

I can’t believe how disproportionate the reaction has been to this.

I mean we’re talking here about five people who chose to be bolted into a sardine can and plunged into the ocean all so they could visit the titanic, which by all accounts at least one of them had done, on numerous occasions.

If these had been five teenagers who had built a sub in their garage and gone down into Poole harbour would there be this level of publicity?

I
Yes it’s sad that they’ve died, although it’s unlikely that they will have known about it, but did it really need wall to wall news coverage?

I can only guess that most of this is pure fascination rather than anything else. Fascination that anyone would choose to do this, fascination that people would actively crawl into this capsule and be bolted in from the outside, and would pay upwards of 200 grand to do it.

Definitely fascination for me

Fascinated by the fact they would choose to do this

Fascinated by how shoddy the vessel was and that it was allowed to do these expeditions with no regulations

Fascinated with the irony it was a trip to the titanic

And also can't stop thinking about how they would have felt in there knowing they might never be found and what the outcome would be.. it's like an awful bad dream.

I genuinely can not stop thinking about it and I guess that's the same for a lot of people. It's not often you hear of an incident like this

broadbezb · 22/06/2023 17:05

And what were the banging noises every 30 minutes?

Possibly Titanic debris according to the NY Post

Neverinamonthofsundays · 22/06/2023 17:06

I think it is morbid fascination, learning a few new things every day so increasing ones knowledge, shock that it has happened, sympathy for the families. It all counts. I do not think anyone or at least hope nobody is finding this entertaining.

Wellgoodforyou · 22/06/2023 17:06

I really hope the debris will confirm that these guys died instantly !

SOBplus · 22/06/2023 17:07

If there were tranquilizers on board and taken soon after disaster struck (assuming no implosion) then they could have oxygen for a lot longer than estimates which is why people aren't giving up yet. I know I would like to be asleep through it all to the end if it were me!

Asthebellcurves · 22/06/2023 17:07

No guarantee they immediately ran into a terminal issue that resulted in the debris. The 30 minute knocking in line with search and rescue protocols could have been them, only for there to be further emergencies on board or CO2 issues, leading to a much more recent terminal issue that led to the debris field being observed now. It will take time to understand what happened.

LolaSmiles · 22/06/2023 17:08

That's what unsettles me. They must have been sitting there knowing exactly what was likely and there was nothing they could do.
If the outcome is the likely outcome, it must have been awful.

Presumably the 'debris' could be the released ballast rather than the sub itself.

Asthebellcurves · 22/06/2023 17:11

@ManuelBensonsLeftBoot Unfortunately that is unlikely, debris - yes, debris field - no, requires it to be something that once constituted a whole object or entity.

The NY Post is a rag of a 'newspaper'

gemstoneju · 22/06/2023 17:11

I think the banging was large marine life or tides moving debris on the seabed, People just hear and see signs and messages in everything, if you listened to a clanking pipe or dripping tap for long enough you might imagine you hear an SOS. It's a very ancient human need to feel there is 'something out there'. And people desperately wanted a happy ending.

Yikesno · 22/06/2023 17:12

I wonder if they'll be able to study the debris and figure out exactly what happened - and when. It does seem likely it imploded and hopefully no one suffered. The families will be able to get closure. I think now it's probably appropriate to day R.I.P.

It’s interesting you say that about looking (and hoping I guess) for something that could be interpreted as a message, as the CEO is a Trustee of SETI and it made me think of the Wow signal which nothing came of.

Excuse my ignorance, why doesn't this thing just end up floating back up to surface??'

The weight of the ocean. It's like asking why the Titanic hasn't floated back up...

I heard somewhere that the pressure down there on a human is like having 12 elephants standing on the palm of the hand.
It's one reason why the Titanic looks so crushed and chewed up.
There might be an opposing pressure though trying to force the people to the top.

@Locutus2000

Thank you for the YouTube link. Watched all 4 and also sent to my DH.

PH and CEO feature prominently inside the titan sub more than once. So sad to see PH was being used as their titanic tour guide in previous dives on this sub- all on YouTube. I hope they paid him millions for that work.
