Yes we know they're billionaires
We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

As you were 😁

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

So does that mean the banging was completely unrelated?

It does feel strange if it was indeed at regular intervals (but perhaps that information wasn’t reliable)

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:29

BreadInCaptivity · 22/06/2023 17:27

They wouldn't announce finding debris if they didn't think it relevant.

Yeh I agree but i think it'd wrong to say "debris of sub found" when the article doesn't actually say that!

notimagain · 22/06/2023 17:29

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:27

So are they saying or insinuating the debris is the titan?
Its all worded poorly.

To my eyes the USCG tweet is perfectly worded:

"A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic. Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information."

Isthisexpected · 22/06/2023 17:30

BBC news had an expert on saying a debris field doesn't necessarily say much on its own about what's happened, even if it is the Titan. It will take time to find out what happened and when and that if it is the Titan it doesn't mean it's the entire sub but parts of it. The guy also said a timeline would be constructed which could still include the banging noises being relevant.

I wouldn't say "poorly worded". They're sharing the information they've got. They've not got proof that it's the sub yet but an unexpected debris field in that particular area...It would be a bit of a coincidence if it was anything other than the Titan.

chilledtuesdays · 22/06/2023 17:30

cant believe they're chatting to a guy on sky news who is friends with two of the people
on the sub. He's totally choked up and seems close to tears.

what if the banging was the sub and it has only imploded since due to being stuck under water for a prolonged period of time?

Agree this is fine

At this point there’s so much interest they may as well update rather than there be leaks of inaccuracies

L13422 · 22/06/2023 17:30

what if the banging was the sub and it has only imploded since due to being stuck under water for a prolonged period of time?

That sounds quite possible. I haven’t seen updates about when the banging stopped/if it was still going on.

Kinsters · 22/06/2023 17:32

L13422 · 22/06/2023 17:30

what if the banging was the sub and it has only imploded since due to being stuck under water for a prolonged period of time?

Surely all the sonar listening devices in the area would have picked it up.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:32

Yeh sorry the wording of that is fine and the daily mail one. The inaccuracies was the poster saying update sub has being found but it's not conclusive..

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:33

I just can't imagine it would have imploded later. Surely it was day 1 early on.
Well, I hope so anyway

BreadInCaptivity · 22/06/2023 17:33

L13422 · 22/06/2023 17:28

Would it have imploded immediately or has it imploded because it’s been stuck at the bottom for a long period of time?

We have no idea. We may never know.

I'm assuming the delay re: the press conference is to speak with the families first and advise them of what has been found.

Assuming it is the sub personally I think it's likely there was a catastrophe at the time they lost contact. But I don't know if there is any way that could be substantiated.

The reason being they lost contact before they reached the titanic (so unlikely to have been caught on the wreck) but still at tremendous depths and would explain why they never surfaced - despite the fail safes and why any implosion wasn't detected by rescuers (as they weren't there yet).

I agree this is the most logical way it happened.

Locutus2000 · 22/06/2023 17:34

BBC confirming that the upcoming press conference is directly related to the debris field.

LolaSmiles · 22/06/2023 17:34

The people on the rescue mission are having a to tread a delicate line here. They have to update enough to be the authority on the updates and avoid things spiraling, but not giving so much to encourage speculation, and they need to be mindful of the family.

The tweet seemed good to me

Pootle40 · 22/06/2023 17:34

thebigcheeselover · 22/06/2023 13:48

I couldn't sleep last night knowing that these 5 people are suffering while I was safe in my bed. It's just awful. What those people must have gone through/be going through is unimageable. The panic and fear. I only hope they had their mobile phones on them and they were able to write goodbye messages to their loved ones. The messages of course won't have been sent but they could be seen/sent when the people & their phones reach the surface/signal/the phones are turned on by loved ones.
I hope the owners of the vessel/company go on trial for manslaughter, if these people have died.

There is much worse going on in the world and these people voluntarily took this decision. Anyone that says they didn't all know the risk......sorry it doesn't take a genius.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:28

Where does it say debris of the sub?
It says debris field found.

Yes, hence I went back (and stated exactly that where you are reading!) to look at credible sources.

I can now amend to debris field.

gemstoneju · 22/06/2023 17:27

You sent me down a rabbit hole, @GwinCoch! I've just remembered seeing a BBC science show where that finding was discredited, yes, it is similar to this. Apparently they now think the 'WOW' signal came from a large comet.

Sorry! I think I saw that show too, it was just one of those odd coincidences that wouldn’t stop playing through my mind…

notimagain · 22/06/2023 17:37

Kinsters · 22/06/2023 17:32

It's interesting how the story about the banging being regular has become almost an accepted fact...did the USCG ever actually say anything other than there noises?

JustCheckingUp · 22/06/2023 17:37

God sky news is heartbreaking

broadbezb · 22/06/2023 17:37

what if the banging was the sub and it has only imploded since due to being stuck under water for a prolonged period of time?

The implosion/explosion would probably have been heard. The bangs were heard, but an implosion was not heard, is unlikely.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/06/2023 17:28

Read between the lines. The coastguard have announced they have found debris exactly where they were looking for the sub and will be holding a press conference about it after further analysis.

It's not looking great.

SOBplus · 22/06/2023 17:38

The vessel can suffer a small leak which at that depth and pressure is unstoppable, it can cut through most anything. In that case sonar would only hear hissing and only if nearby as the vessel slowly fills with water until pressures are equal - no big bang necessary. It happened with a research ROV which was lost due to a pinprick hole at a port (Bathysphere)
