Apologies if already posted but here’s a link to OceanGates website showing the Titanic expedition itinerary for anyone interesting in reading it

https://oceangateexpeditions.com/tour/titanic-expedition/

Unable to get the site to open on any browser now. Confused

Can't imagine it's because they're inundated with marauding hordes eager to book tickets for the next exhibition.

I agree with you but on the other hand, is this such a massive news story because they’re billionaires!? … https://www.instagram.com/p/Ctv9IxKIjqJ/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

The migrants' vessel that sank of Greece has been a big news story with lots of coverage of what happened, criticism of the Greek response, stories of families reunited with people who survived, people still searching for their loved ones. .If people had been trapped on that vessel with a chance of being rescued for several days you can bet it would have been an even bigger story.

News stories involving rescue missions for missing people often capture the public's interest - remember the Chilean miners, the thai football team stuck in a cave, MH370. All were huge stories and none involved billionaires.

I was thinking the same. On 14th June a boat carrying 700 migrants broke down, Despite the coastguard being aware for 12 hours, nothing was done and reports are also circulating that the greek coastguard dragged the boat away from greek waters at which point it capsized. Approx 600 people are feared dead, non of them were billionaires. Just desperate people. Barely a peep in the news

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/06/2023 21:18

This may be the man who is a friend of one of the passengers - if so, of course he is sensitive about it

It wouldn't be surprising, it's not like there are that many people who want to do this, let alone are able to. Two of the people on the sub are members of the Explorers Club, and it wouldn't surprise me if several other past or potential travellers were too. Or involved in similar associations that they'd know of each other through.

Nicknamesforviolet · 21/06/2023 21:20

Autumntree · 21/06/2023 21:15

Do they have food and water?

They said "limited supplies" were on the sub during the press conference.

TankFlyBoss · 21/06/2023 21:20

There is a really interesting programme on bbc iPlayer called "take me to titanic" which is a documentary of the same mission from last year.

Absolutely - I remember a story of a child being trapped in a well and the effort people went to save him.

I think there is something about people being trapped and the efforts people go to save them.

Remember Apollo 13 - and the interest and hope around the world in bringing them back home.

It must say something to the human psyche.

The thing is ocean currents can be a few miles an hour. Doesn't sound like much but 1 mph over 2 days takes the sub 48 miles from where it was last located, and the direction and speed of the currents at depth are unknown.

That checks out with the "area the size of Connecticut" statement - that state is about 90x50 miles.

And underwater, best case scenario if it's very clear and the vehicle has a good spotlight, visibility is about 1/10th of a mile. Meanwhile active sonar has trouble distinguishing the missing sub from any other bit of debris or rocks.

If the submersible is found with the occupants alive, they can probably be rescued. On the surface is somewhat straightforward. At depth, unstick the sub from whatever it's stuck on - which OK, needs to be done carefully to avoid damage - and it can surface by itself.

Finding it is the problem.

Thank you for your response. I understand, I also feel it's a hopeless situation. Those poor men

KnickerlessParsons · 21/06/2023 21:15

No.

We don't know. OceanGate have never commented. Previous passengers have said food and water was available but they chose not to eat/drink because of the toilet situation. Where are you getting no from?

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 21:22

No food or water and days of human waste.

You say that but look how many people are still desperate to climb Mount Everest despite being woefully underprepared, completely reliant on the people they pay to take them up and knowing that hundreds have died trying and that they may see dead bodies along the way.

So many people are happy to just blindly trust others and assume it won't happen to them.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 21:22

“Barely a peep in the news”

There was plenty of coverage of it!

Emotionalsupportviper · 21/06/2023 19:38

Currents could have carried it in almost any direction. It is pitch black down there, too, and the subm may have drifted under part of the Titanic itself, and not be in open view even if they are in the right area.

I hadn't even thought about the pitch black. Sounds hopeless 😔

I don't think it has anything to do with them being billionaires, that just happens to be one of the twists to this. It's a very unusual story, and the key thing I think is that it's ongoing. There's a will-they-won't-they to it, a race against time. So many people are kind of living with it, maybe praying and hoping.

In the recent Greek ship migrant tragedy it had happened before the world knew about it. And however unfair it is to those who lost their lives to a lot of people it becomes just another news item. That's not to say that there aren't also a lot of people who do care.

Humans are attracted to novelty, and this is a novel situation.

This was a leading news story for days.

Barely a peep? BBC news alone ran several articles on it. I've just had a quick look and there's at least a dozen.

“ think there is something about people being trapped and the efforts people go to save them.

Absolutely! Plus it’s a mystery, and when it is a few people, we can “know” them all a little bit from news features etc.

Same when searching for survivors in earthquakes etc - there is jubilation/despair when each individual is found/a rescue doesn’t happen in time.

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 21:26

In regards to dehydration, couldn't they have urinated in their empty water bottles and drank each others to keep them going a bit longer?

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 21:27

I believe that drinking urine is not very hydrating.

Hotandverybotheredagain · 21/06/2023 21:27

Cannot imagine how horrific this is for everyone involved. I said to my husband that if it was him and one of my sons I would rather my son dies before anyone else! Am still hoping they will get out alive but it is so unlikely 😢

SunnyEgg · 21/06/2023 21:28

I don’t think that’s right, which news do you watch / read etc

Yes very moving clips of people being rescued from collapsed buildings
