I would think to the mother of the 19 yr lad it is very much a tragedy!!

An awful, heartbreaking situation yes.

I absolutely feel for her (but I also think there is no way I'd have let my child on this venture - but I appreciate compared to the father she may have had limited sway).

But tragedy no.

To repeat its a statistically probable failure of a very high risk venture.

Tragic is for the improbable and utterly unexpected.

Not it's not. Look up the definition of Tragedy. I has nothing to do with improbable or unexpected.

I think you know how contemptuous you are coming across, it's unpleasant.

Even if they do locate them, surely they wouldn't have time to save them now anyway. And that's assuming they or some of them are still alive.
I wish the resources put into saving the lives of 5 people who were putting their lives at risk for fun, were put into saving those who risk their lives out of desperation. It's a messed up world we are in

My husband said this to me earlier. I said, but it isn't a competition and he said that's exactly what it is. I'm not sure how to feel about it now. I just know all loss of life at sea is awful.

NotDavidTennant · 21/06/2023 21:03

I don't know why people keep referring to the people on the Titan as "the billionaires". As far as I can tell only one of them is actually a billionaire.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 21:03

Imnotahoarderreally · 21/06/2023 20:45

A friend commented that if the five are rescued one of them should be going straight to prison.
I hadn't really thought until then about the criminality or not of such an expedition.

Well, this wouldn’t happen straight away!

There may be a US or Canadian “corporate manslaughter” type law that applies (depending on where company is registered) but this would have to be proven and directors don’t always go to jail for it, AFAIK.

No regulations. It's not like aircraft or surface ships which are covered by aviation and maritime laws. International waters and if your home made boat sinks it's hard luck.

However their business is based in Seattle, I assume it is a registered business there, so even if they operate in International waters, there should be some regulations and obligations that a US business must adhere to.

That being said, I know know nothing about running a business from anywhere in the US, so may be a pointless comment.

No, at least two of them are billionaires (and I guess the son would have inherited so he's a billionaire-in-waiting).

I thought he was very respectful. Nothing to be gained by gloating that he had seen the problems over the the others is there?

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 21:09

“They had a guy on LBC before who was originally set to go on this expedition, but pulled out for “reasons”. Said reasons were soon inferred by the host talking about safety concerns, but the guest side stepped that by saying now wasn’t the time.

Kinda think now is a great time to talk about that experimental carbon fibre coffin several people paid a chunk of change to ride in.”

This may be the man who is a friend of one of the passengers - if so, of course he is sensitive about it

BreadInCaptivity · 21/06/2023 21:10

I think you know how contemptuous you are coming across, it's unpleasant.

Actually no, I think I'm being realistic.

If you've read my posts I have huge sympathy for the families involved.

I'm supportive of the rescue efforts.

I hope they are rescued.

The fact remains that these private ventures are to enable wealthy people to join an exclusive club for which they then have bragging rights.

There is NO scientific merit in human based exploration of the Titanic.

Why does it being a risky event mean it's not a tragedy though?

I agree - it's not a tragedy for me. It's a sad event and a horrible way to die but not a tragedy.

It's a tragedy for the people involved but it's not a tragedy for people not directly involved.

I can think of other events that I would call a tragedy.

PurposefulBear · 21/06/2023 21:12

The father and son lived in Surbiton just outside London in Surrey, the son went to school in Cobham and just recently graduated. I know they were Uber rich but there are lots of people like that around the area and to most people, they are very much normal people with hopes and dreams, the difference being that their hopes and dreams are perhaps a little more easy to achieve than ours… but nonetheless they didn’t live in some “other” billionaire world.

Well you're just making up your own definition of the word. How odd.

thatlldothen · 21/06/2023 21:12

My 18yo asked me a few months back if I heard him shout on me from his sleep during the night, because he had a nightmare and woke himself up shouting on me. I instinctively hugged him and said of course I hadn't heard, or I'd have been straight in. Thinking of him being so scared just for that split second was awful.

I cannot begin to imagine the pain the 19yo's mother is going through right now, just knowing that her boy is feeling such fear, let alone her knowing the likely outcome of all this.

Well you're just making up your own definition of the word. How odd.

an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe

This does not cause great suffering to me or distress.

It does to people involved.

People die everyday in accidents. I don't see those as tragedies to me.

The fact the website is still very much working and there are reviews of previous expeditions, is just harrowing.
