I think the waivers should be considered void because there is a basic duty of care that has been neglected in the form of safety checks not being carried out.

Are you an expert on US/International/Maritime law?

Pedallleur · 22/06/2023 11:20

there are no scuba tanks, this isnt a swim out vessel. The air tanks are fixed.

Rinoachicken · 22/06/2023 11:21

What a weird coincidence:

(From Sky) Wife of OceanGate CEO is descendant of Titanic passengers

Wendy Rush, the wife of OceanGate chief executive and founder Stockton Rush, is a descendant of two first-class Titanic passengers who died when the ocean liner sank in 1912, according to their wedding announcement in the New York Times.

Mr Rush is aboard the Titan submersible and was believed to be piloting the missing vessel.

His wife is a great-great-granddaughter of businessman Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida - who were reportedly two of the richest passengers aboard Titanic.

Mr Straus, born in 1845, was a co-owner of Macy's department store with his brother Nathan.

His body was reportedly found at sea around two weeks after Titanic sank. His wife's body has never been recovered.

It seems to have taken too long for the equipment needed to get there to help.

Don't understand why it didn't happen sooner.

What is the point of all these
Why didn't they do X
Why wasn't Y done sooner
posts?

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 22/06/2023 11:21

Tbh in those circumstances I think I'd rather die sooner rather than later. I'm a glass is full sort of person but, no, in this instance.

I think they should have deployed all of this on Sunday. Waiting until Wednesday seems mad to me. Surely better to waste resources and turn around if they weren't needed?

Pedallleur · 22/06/2023 11:23

No one here knows what safety checks are carried out. there will be insurance certification requirements. The team will have I presume a checklist. Need to get the vehicle back and see what went wrong. One for the lawyers and under whose laws would it be trialled?

Rinoachicken · 22/06/2023 11:24

They didn’t seem to have any insurance - it was unclassed, untested and so uninsurable

N4ish · 22/06/2023 11:25

Agreed, no company on earth would agree to insure this trip.

At what point do you say help? losing contact may be a regular thing but there may be costs involved and these maritime companies arent a fire brigade. They are commercial operations and eqpt may be in use on another continent

Fightyouforthatpie · 22/06/2023 11:21

posts?

Because we want to understand!

We don't know the technicalities - we know there will be genuine reasons for these things not being done, but we don't know what they are and to us non-experts the answers seem so obvious "But why not do X? Has nobody thought of Y" etc.

I think that wanting to learn and to understand is important. A desire to "know", to be educated, in every situation and at any age, can only be a good thing.

Fightyouforthatpie · 22/06/2023 11:26

Why is everyone banging on about Insurance as if it's some kind of magical thing? It's irrelevant - it's as if people don't even know what the word actually means.

And often someone has read some information and can post it

Interesting but not really a true "coincidence". He will have known about his wife's family. It might even have influenced him.

Interesting too, that his wife is director of comms for the firm.

StarmanBobby · 22/06/2023 11:27

'It seems to have taken too long for the equipment needed to get there to help.

Don't understand why it didn't happen sooner.'

Because they're in the fecking middle of the ocean? Because they have to mobilise, get crew, get there?

Maybe the question should be - why are they spending so much money when there's so little chance of actually being sucessful?

I don't understand why we don't give a much of a shit about children dying on small boat crossings as we do about billionaire tourists. Maybe because it's a better story?

Laiste · 22/06/2023 11:28

While it is interesting, I don't think it's a coincidence that his (Rush) wife has ancestors who were on the Titanic. I imagine it's an interest in the subject which bought them together.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 11:28

And I greatly doubt there will be insurance for a cowboy outfit like this. No company with half a brain would accept the liability.

Because of the aftermath.

Nobody thinks it's a "magic thing".

Helpful.

To be fair, are any of the posts here helpful? It's just theoretical discussion, not that US Navy is reading mumsnet looking for new ideas how to rescue them.

Fightyouforthatpie · 22/06/2023 11:20

Are you an expert on US/International/Maritime law?

No but I can read. Have you read the historical criticisms of this company?

Most of your posts are just criticising posters who are not experts trying to get our heads round it all and hoping for a good outcome for these men.

Isn’t there another thread on the migrants yet, so many posters have said this there must be a place to discuss it by now

Wheresthebeach · 22/06/2023 11:31

I will never understand why people don't just scroll by threads they object to. Or why people think they are fit to be the thread police and tell people they can't ask questions.

Its a discussion forum, asking questions, having a discussion is the the entire point. Being here isn't obligatory.

hindere · 22/06/2023 11:31

It's not over until it's over. The Horizon Arctic is in position to assist Victor with chains and lifting. The Magellan ROV has side-scan sonar to assist in the search for the submersible. All sorts of ships have arrived with specialist equipment.

Just so. And I agree it's not over until it's over.
