OP of the last thread has said she has to pop out so making this one as we’re almost full on the 2nd thread.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

There are likely to be human remains on or near the wreck, so underwater gravesite isn't hyperbolic.

I would imagine there are only bones left now

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 10:34

I can't help but to think every attempt of rescuing the sub is happening far too late? The American plane arrived in Jersey at 5am this morning to collect the equipment required to search for the missing sub. why wasn't this deployed earlier. It baffles me.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 10:35

Appalonia · 22/06/2023 10:23

I listened to that, was really fascinating, a lot of v knowledgeable people with some good information.

Thank you to @larkstar and @Appalonia for this.

I'd missed the link earlier.

People are more likely to donate for a channel swim or a bungee jump, than they are likey to sponsor someone to watch 10 hours of Bake-Off. I has to be something that captures the imagination.

I don’t agree.

People do these all the time now for a training goal or thrill. Sitting on a bike in a busy place is more visual.

It's not looking good is it? :-( I hope there have been positive developments that haven't reached the news yet.

Me too.

It seems increasingly like the Americans never intended to use Magellan's expertise for the rescue. Only for recovery.

Not even that. Bones dissolve in very deep seawater.

If they only have "a few hours of oxygen left on board" I can't see how there is any chance of a miracle as they've already reported it'll take hours to get to the sub once it's even been located.

If they have their spare air in scuba tanks, I could imagine the father giving his tank to his son - likewise whatever water ration he has. This would double the amount of time the son has to survive.

The theoretical maximum time for anyone on that sub to survive would surely have to assume only one survivor with access to all the others' available resources. Whether the other four died of natural causes, through acts of heroism, or in some other way, it would be possible for a sole survivor to last much, much longer than the awful countdown times being estimated.

I have sessions in a pressurised tank for oxygen therapy. It's a little bigger- you can stand up and has seats for 8 around the edge- but it's unpleasantly claustrophobic. You have to be released from outside. They can't get you out in less than 15mins. It takes an hour and a half, and I'm always desperate for the end.

This sounds awful! How does it take an hour and a half to get you out?

medianewbie · 22/06/2023 10:37

@100milesanhour. That would be completely baffling to me if the case?

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 10:11

Has an ROV been down to the site of the wreck yet? If not, why not? Wouldn't that be the most obvious place to look? Genuine question - obviously I'm no expert and don't have a clue about the logistics of these things.

We don't know.

The US Coast Guard isn't making public the minutiae of the operation

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2023 10:38

No one could do anything about the hypothermia, though

I think PP meant that the session was 1.5h with a 15 minute release (depressurisation) time.

His son might refuse to take it.

I could see me and my mother force-feeding each other water in a situation like this. Neither of us would want to see the other suffer.

Elerandooo · 22/06/2023 10:41

I know some posters on here may not agree… but I hope they continue to search for a rescue a lot longer beyond the time they are claiming the oxygen will run out. As PPs have suggested, there is a chance one or more of them could survive longer.

Harping · 22/06/2023 10:42

News saying they are still hearing banging every 30 minutes. Sounds horrendous if that’s true.

2lsinllama · 22/06/2023 10:43

I keep refreshing Sky News hoping for some sort of miracle- like the Chilean miners or the boys in the cave. But it’s looking increasingly unlikely

Really?! Is that a new news report? I thought it had stopped a while ago. Gosh, if that's true I really hope they're located soon.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/06/2023 10:44

even If one party gave up their life for another, a decomposing body uses oxygen itself so it wouldn’t save much / anything

The key word is "pressurised". They will have to equalise pressures over time to avoid injuring her, it's the same risk to divers ascending too rapidly from pressure at depth.

The last hours are individual tanks I read so that wouldn’t matter

meditrina · 22/06/2023 10:46

I think the US authorities will want to recover the submersible, because knowing what happened to it and why might help with the safety of other deep water submersibles. Though of course it might not be possible, even if it is found, to ascertain what happened.

I’ve been wondering if they have their phones or any other writing implements on board. 😔
