Are the robot subs that can get down there down there ATM? Or still on surface?

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 10:14

I just hope it isn't still on the sea bed, entangled in the wreckage of the titanic. The fact they would have been aware of that is just horrific. Alternatively, if it is surface level, it still wouldn't be floating on the top. It needs a ramp in order to be offer from the water so this is likely why they are struggling to locate it. This combined with the dull colour it's been painted in, is a recipe for disaster.

There are likely to be human remains on or near the wreck, so underwater gravesite isn't hyperbolic.

Apparently they will be gone by now due to the pressure down there and micro organisms that will have broken the remains down

You're missing that people don't know where the submersible is?

Mydogisamentalist · 22/06/2023 10:16

How is it taking so long to send remotely operated vehicles down there? I would have thought something would be searching the ocean floor by now. Even if it’s just at the wreck site.

WunWun · 22/06/2023 10:16

And that going near a dead body isn't "interfering" with anything and won't kill you.

Wiltson · 22/06/2023 10:17

And swimming for 21 miles through the world's busiest shipping lane without a safety team is not a risky adventure? Or is it only okay to enjoy risky adventure if you combine it with a bit of a fundraising?

He did have a safety team/boat. It's being investigated as to what happened with them.

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 10:17

Why can't they use that heat scanning technology to find it? Surely the sun would be warmer than everything else around it?

OvaHere · 22/06/2023 10:18

I decided yesterday that the small glimmer of hope that was there on Monday is gone. Whatever is done from now on is almost certainly recovery not rescue.

The whole X amount of hours oxygen is just guess work. The real number will have been based on loads of factors that nobody actually knows currently.

Very sad for their families especially the woman who has lost her husband and son.

I'm not sure that it would be, I think the outside would be at the ambient temp of the ocean.

Also, it's a long way down and I don't think technology would work through those depths.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 22/06/2023 10:21

The US will keep searching while there is hope of a rescue and then continue with a recovery search until they have thoroughly tested their equipment.
Then Magellan will continue a recovery search, possibly funded by the Explorers Club.
Putting two tethered ROVs down together from two different teams would be asking for entanglement problems.

hindere · 22/06/2023 10:21

I was saying in this, or last, thread that the people who have visited the wreck many times (including Cameron) say they have never seen human remains, but shoes in pairs may indicate they once contained a body. There's theories that remains may be more preserved within inaccessible areas of the wreck...

So possibly

This is Mario's Sunday of the 8hr live stream

I listened to that, was really fascinating, a lot of v knowledgeable people with some good information.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 10:23

No remains have been found in the areas explorers have been able to access, however the areas of the titanic which are still preserved and less accessible could still house human remains.

My understanding is that the only vessels able to go so deep are the French and British ones. The US didn't allow either of the vessels to fly into the US and didn't issue permits for them to travel. The French eventually decided to ignore that and just travel anyway? The British team are still waiting on the tarmac in Jersey. Hopefully someone can correct me if any of that isn't accurate but I think the Americans will have a lot to answer for at the inevitable inquest.

It will simply be because this is a niche operation and worldwide there are not that many Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) with all associated infrastructure (e.g. surface vessel) capable at operating at the sort of depths being talked about here, so it has taken time to get anything to the scene..one of our in house experts may have the actual number..

First such resource to make it appears to have been the French vessel Atalante.

Depends why the permits weren't issued - I postulated upthread that the batteries may be highly flammable (I don't know any specifics, but some air cargo is dangerous and does need caution)

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2023 10:26

Or they need to make sure they had a support boat in the vicinity that could work with the Magellan, say.

L13422 · 22/06/2023 10:28

I read somewhere that the last certain amount of hours of oxygen is actually through individual tanks. Surely this means the time isn’t exact. If I were the young boys dad he would get my tank and I’m sure the experienced guy would make his last longer. I don’t think this almost countdown the news is doing should be trusted as exact

JeandeServiette · 22/06/2023 10:30

It can't possibly be exact anyway. IDK why they're bandying around such a specific time.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/06/2023 10:30

Throughalookingglass · 22/06/2023 10:13

People who raise money for charity by doing extreme things eg channel crossing, skydive, bungee jumping - also have a choice. They could just as easily sit on a stationary bike and pedal for twenty four hours. People who volunteer to do more extreme sports do it because they want to either overcome their fears or they enjoy the lead up to it or they want to conquer it. The money raised is of tremendous benefit but the ‘goal’ could just as easily be a 50K/100K walk.

I feel sorry for the man of course as every human would. I don’t think one life is more valuable than another.

People are more likely to donate for a channel swim or a bungee jump, than they are likey to sponsor someone to watch 10 hours of Bake-Off. I has to be something that captures the imagination.

There’s a daughter/ sister too who didn’t go - Alina. I’m guessing she’s under 18 as you need to be 18 to go.

I haven’t read this whole thread. Yes it’s sad, but I think the Messenia boat is a whole lot sadder and we didn’t spend the resources on that that we are on this. Not even close. I genuinely don’t get why there are so many resources being used on this. They chose to do this. If they researched it properly, it was fairly likely this would happen. To see some sludge at the bottom of the sea, that you’d probably get a better view of with videos from remotely operated vehicles.

On the Messenia, there were many more people, maybe fleeing fearing death or torture, rather than a jolly to see some sludge.

beeonmybonnett · 22/06/2023 10:32

It’s so awful. Thinking of the people’s families. Hopefully after this incident these trips in the submersible will be permanently axed.

Generally channel swimmers have a boat with them - was there not one with him? Was it weather conditions? (We've had some terrible storms come on very suddenly.)

Yes, there was a supporting boat

It's not mentioned in the BBC article reporting that the search has been called off. But was in the one when he was missing
