I suspect he was going as the "content expert", and the CEO was the pilot. So the paying visitors were Hamish Harding and the Dawoods.

Hamish Harding said he was joining as a mission specialist. Doesn't mean he wasn't paying though.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 22/06/2023 08:57

Gawd. that twitter live feels like watching an execution.

their families must be in bits.

cakeorwine · 22/06/2023 08:58

I hope they spend all the money they need to to find those poor men trapped in that submersible. It is perfectly acceptable to spend all that money on finding them and saving their lives

How much money should we spend saving lives?

How much is a "life worth"? We could spend a fortune on vaccines, safe water treatment, reducing the impact of climate change - all these things could save lives?

(it is a question that should be asked - how much money do we / should we spend on saving lives - maybe on another thread though)

Wheresthebeach · 22/06/2023 09:01

I can't imagine they'd release a recording of the banging. Its too terrible for the families and friends to listen to if it was real. A fake recording is beyond vile.

MayThe4th · 22/06/2023 09:01

Christ how gullible are some people?

Surely nobody actually believes that these recordings have been released on tiktok? Surely everyone with half a brain knows that a tiktok claiming to have the recordings is fake?

However much it takes. I don't begrudge paying taxes for people in that situation to be rescued. Anyone who does should be ashamed.

Shade17 · 22/06/2023 09:02

That’s what they call the paying tourists I believe.

We’re not spending anything FFS, so you can calm down. It’s up to Canada and the US how much they want to spend, nothing to do with you.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 09:03

I didn't see the recording on TikTok, I don't have that app! I have seen it circulating though. If it is a fake recording, which I hope (in the nicest way possible) it is, then yes I agree, it's absolutely vile. Awful thing to do.

Is there a point that you would call it off?

When the oxygen has run out and after a week or two of searching they can't find the submersible.

@Naunet are you referring to me in that post?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/06/2023 09:06

CrunchyCarrot · 22/06/2023 08:53

Yes it would be harzardous for sure. I was just thinking about the footballer who died in a small plane crash - Emiliano Sala. Plane just disappeared off the radar. The plane was only found by a shipwreck salvager who went looking for it (admittedly very shallow water compared to where the Titanic is!!) and found it plus Sala's body, which enabled forensics to be done and cause of death and crash established. Otherwise the plane might have never been located at all.

For anyone interested:

David Mearns — you might have seen him if you've ever watched National Geographic's Drain the Oceans. He's also a member of the Explorers Club.

My point was about "spending as much money as it takes to rescue those people"

Not about money we are spending - just a general question.

Why is it ok to spend a lot of money to save a few people but people balk at spending money to save other people - and maybe a lot lot more money?

It's a question for another thread - but a case of how much is a life worth and how much money should we spend saving lives and if we think that amount is ok, why don't we (as in the world) spend that money to save lives?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 22/06/2023 09:07

WhT happened to the Twitter space? They said there was news that the sub imploded and then just ended?

On their website it says anyone who signs up can be a ‘mission specialist’ and have a part in being involved in the expedition. It’s part of the marketing.

Which account on Twitter is this? I think there's quite a few posing as official when they are in fact not ShockHmm

Trixiefirecracker · 22/06/2023 09:10

The French guy (sorry, I forgot his name momentarily) in the interview that someone posted above, quite clearly said it will be the cold that gets to them first . He even jokes about it, it’s very chilling to watch. They have limited rations and air but very quickly would die from hypothermia if all the equipment is out.

It's really not a big ask to say that they should search for 5 days. Once we know it's unsurvivable, it doesn't have to continue.

You could use the exact same cost argument against one child with a life limiting illness using resources. Lots of things it's over but if it was us or our family, we'd want it to be done for us.

FlightOfTheProcrastinator · 22/06/2023 09:10

If the submersible was safety registered and up to standard, I feel there would be a lot more impetus to continue and retrieve it to ascertain what went wrong in order to improve those standards.

As it isn’t, once enough time has lapsed for experts to determine there is no way any of them will have survived, I fear the whole thing might be put down to misadventure and the search called off. The explorers knew what they were risking but I bet the Dawoods weren’t fully aware.

All the details of its construction emerging are shocking. I know most high-risk activities require a waiver to be signed, but tourist agencies market this - a previous passenger said he booked through an adventure agency and it mentions it on the OG website too.

I would certainly assume that if it’s marketed to the public like that, it has been approved in some form and the waiver was just the necessary arse-covering. It really is quite unbelievable.

hindere · 22/06/2023 09:11

Yes, of course. He will have been an invaluable addition with his specialist knowledge of travelling to such depths previously and even setting a record in the process.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 22/06/2023 09:07

Likely deleted for being fake like the rest of the pictures and sound recordings and claims from nobodies on the internet seeking fame.

Seriously this has all gone too far. Now.

It’s one thing following news sources and talking about them. It’s quite another sharing TikTok’s and tweets and spaces which are pure fake.

UsernameIsCheese · 22/06/2023 09:12

So assuming the regular banging is coming from inside the sub, meaning at least 1 is alive, there's about 2 hours of oxygen left, but isn't that for all 5? It's possible some of the crew is dead, meaning oxygen lasts longer? I'm just sort of wondering, how long until it's impossible any of the crew are still alive?

I guess it depends when they each die
