Do people matter less because they are rich??

I don't think it's so much that, it's maybe that most folks can't afford half a million squids for a trip out. on a massively dangerous sea voyage. where you've had prior warnings it may not end well.

For them, it's a drop in the ocean. They are sooooo rich that half a mill means nothing. Once you can afford absolutely everything your heart desires, life might get a bit boring. So all that's left is doing mad stuff that nobody else can afford.
And with that comes risks.

That's not to say that many air/sea rescues are not genuine above board emergencies. Of course they are and as a family we contribute generously
to Suffolk air sea rescue, and to RNLI. I volunteer in an RNLI shop.

I hear first hand when there's a shout to rescue someone in trouble. Usually drunken teens skinny dipping that's got out of hand.. But, you know, maybe they would have been ok left alone. But you can't be too careful, can you?
Always best to keep a watchful eye.

I seem to recall it's something to do with a combination of delirium and damaged nerves.

Have just quickly googled..Paradoxical undressing is seen especially after alcohol, and older people.

-''It is concluded that paradoxical undressing might be explained by changes in peripheral vasoconstriction in the deeply hypothermic person. It represents the last effort of the victim and is followed almost immediately by unconsciousness and death.-'' {Pub med}

Terminal burrowing is also fascinating.

We don’t know that any of them are alive. All the navy experts are saying that it’s highly unlikely.

The coastguard have confirmed that they don’t know what the origin of the underwater sounds is, and that these have been sent off to scientists for analysis. It’s only the media who are reporting coordinated banging which has then been picked up by individuals and been interpreted as thinking that one of them is definitely alive.

It’s possible that the sounds haven’t even come from the sub. But they have to cover all bases.

Slight derail of the thread.

Has anyone else seen On the Beach -the 1950s film? I have not read the book or seen the remake.

Anyway a US sub arrives in Melbourne shortly after WWIII, the northern hemisphere is destroyed by nuclear war and the radiation is heading south but then they receive radio signals from the US, meaningless not Morse but definitely a signal so they set off to find it.

When they eventually get there it is a coke bottle wrapped in a pull cord from a blind, the window is open and the breeze is making the bottle push down a Morse key.

I'm putting this here because that is what I keep thinking. Yes there are sounds but they have not located where they are coming from, it could be the equivalent of the coke bottle in the pull cord.

RegimentalSturgeon · 22/06/2023 01:25

For them, it's a drop in the ocean

Oof. (Sorry, PP)
But that’s what they paid for, no one was holding a gun to their heads; they were not motivated by anything most of humanity would recognise as desperation. De facto getting into the submersible = ‘I am prepared to take insane risks’

I've read the book and watched the film. Harrowing isn't it.

I hadn't thought of the film to be honest. Yes, they think there are survivors.

I obviously hope that these poor people are rescued. But I find it also incomprehensible that people want to visit the final resting place where 1500 people lost their lives at sea. It’s just ghoulish.

To undertake such a risky mission that defies nature and living mammals amphibians etc that can’t survive at those depths just why?

Some things are just meant to be left at be.

I have been following this news story with mixed feelings. I obviously hope for the best outcome.

I find it very odd when people come out with comments like this. People visit all kinds of ship wrecks. Titanic is the most famous of all, and she will disappear soon, so I think it's perfectly understandable that people might want to see it.

If the ship had gone down last year, then yes, it might be ghoulish, but this happened over a hundred years ago. The people are long gone. Have you never been to the catacombs in Paris, visited tombs in Egypt, or seen a mummy in a museum? There are many, many things more 'ghoulish' than this, and yet millions of tourists visit every year.

MidnightMeltdown · 22/06/2023 01:49

Easy. You simply fire your head engineer and politely decline to comment on any letters from institutions trying to crimp your innovative style with things like "safety" and "regulatory compliance".

I have to say, in clips that I've seen of the CEO, he comes across as an incredibly arrogant man. Things that he was coming out with about safety measures being a waste of time etc, are scarily reminiscent of what people once said about lifeboats on the Titanic being a waste of space.

The most remarkable thing is that he managed to convince intelligent people to get into that thing.

I agree we visit ghoulish places all the time but the titanic is not as long gone as you think. Due to where I live both myself and my husband have several relations that were on the titanic when it sank. One of my relations survived because he had rowing experience so could operate a life boat, the rest of our relations were just general workers on the boat so went down with it but I have family group photos of them in my hallway. I don’t have any personal issues with people wanting to see the wreck though, it’s not much different to visiting a famous persons grave.

I personally think binging true crime series is more ghoulish than wanting to see the titanic.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 01:59

Apparently the coast guard has said it is almost completely certain the sounds are coming from the particular depth of water the sonobuoys picking them up are targeted at - which is not far beneath the surface. So if the sounds are the sub - and the fact they are coming at thirty minute intervals on the hour and half hour makes it seem more than likely - it's not on the bottom, which is good news in terms of hypothermia, I would think.

SameOldFears · 22/06/2023 02:16

Just seen a post on twitter, Posted ten minutes ago, I can't post links here yet, I'm not sure if I can give the twitter username on here or not? I will post what she wrote in the tweet, Not sure how true it is just posting what I saw..

"My father, commander of the U.S navy ship at the scene said more banging was heard at 30 minute intervals, They have pinpointed the sound to a location 2.5miles down on the sea bed, That means they are alive but we won't be able to save them."

She also posted a picture (I'm not sure if its genuine or not) showing the titan apparently stuck underneath the Titanic.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 02:28

What is her username? I’d be amazed if this is true @SameOldFears

sashh · 22/06/2023 02:31

@hindere It is. Maybe I should read the book too.

She also posted a picture (I'm not sure if its genuine or not) showing the titan apparently stuck underneath the Titanic.

It can't be genuine can it? I mean what would have taken the photo?

ForestLilac · 22/06/2023 02:33

It’s fake. The picture she posted is from a 2013 painting by Ken Marschall apparently.

ForestLilac · 22/06/2023 02:36

I don’t know why people post fake stuff. I mean, I’m sure it’s all fun posting fake celeb stories but a fake post about this? The mind boggles at the emotional state of some people.

No of course it’s not genuine. I mean even the coastguard doesn’t know where it is, It would be easy enough to photoshop a picture though.

These stories always bring out the lunes who make stuff up to get attention for themselves.

It’s a bit like when we see threads on here about e.g. the impending death of the queen for instance, there’s always someone who says “I have a brother/cousin/<insert relative of choice> who works close to this and all leave has been cancelled as an announcement is expected soon.” And these kinds of posts were posted for years before the queen actually died.

Total attention seeking fantasists the lot of them.

I’m surprised the psychics haven’t crawled out of the woodwork yet to say that they can locate the missing people. Or maybe they have.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 02:39

Whatever that thing is must be a lot bigger than the submersible.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 02:42

Oh it is a submersible! Just looked at his other paintings. Incredibly detailed.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 02:47

The Titanic looks nothing like that now. It's being eaten by bacteria.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/06/2023 04:12

1dayatatime · 21/06/2023 23:00

I think this has to be the end of "paid trips " to the Titanic.

Otherwise future trips might include the sight of the sunken submersible with 5 bodies inside). Which would be a bit like going on a safari and as part of the sight seeing, looking at an broken down tourist bus with a bunch of skeletons inside.

I don't disagree... however your reasoning is beyond unlikely, and you would not be able to see into the Titan anyway, the window is tiny and the interior would be dark. No one would be seeing anything!
