I think that’s it for me and it’s also the fact whether you’re a millionaire, billionaire or trillionaire makes no difference to your chances of survival in this instance seems really sobering. I’ve found myself feeling so sorry for them while I struggle to pay the mortgage on my little house or afford the food shop but I can tuck my kids in at night and we’re all safe, because we don’t have the money to do crazy things! It’s also the fact it isn’t a situation that’s already come to a conclusion (potentially) and just having to go about your day while they are going through that is so tragic

You know what...The other night, in my humble home I thought ''I bet those millionaires would give it all just to breathe sweet air again''..

I obviously hope that these poor people are rescued. But I find it also incomprehensible that people want to visit the final resting place where 1500 people lost their lives at sea. It’s just ghoulish.

To undertake such a risky mission that defies nature and living mammals amphibians etc that can’t survive at those depths just why?

Some things are just meant to be left at be.

I have been following this news story with mixed feelings. I obviously hope for the best outcome.

friendlycat · 22/06/2023 00:31

Sorry amphibians don’t live in the sea !

Is there anything else that could be making the 'noises'? Surely the ocean is full of very large creatures moving about at that depth, and the searchers did say there was a lot of metal. Christ, there must be a ton of stuff off Newfoundland dating back to the battle of the Atlantic alone.

It seems like the sounds were being detected at regular time intervals which would make natural sounds less likely to be the cause. It was mentioned earlier that banging for a couple of minutes on the hour and half hour is the recognised way to try and alert rescuers to your location. Whale noise, shifting of the Titanic etc are very unlikely to replicate that pattern. Random bangs could be anything but if the sounds detected were following that type of pattern it would seem unlikely that it was totally unrelated background noise.

I'm what most Daily Mail readers would call 'Woke' and I can understand the media interest, it doesn't make me angry. A billionaire and multi millionare and his son trapped on a vanity trip to look at the wreck of the Titanic, paying over a quarter of a million a ticket. But beyond that, its just a fucking horrifc way to die. As a human this breaks my heart, I wouldn't want people I despise to die like that, never mind an innocent teenage boy

Agree. I'm poor as a church mouse in my little home with the bills piling up.
But I'd give all my saved money if it would make a difference and save their lives.
But it won't. It's all down to the technology in place for these deep sea dives.
Chucking money at this is not going to help.

Yes as a mother I am sickened. I have children and cannot imagine how Mum is . Beyond my comprehension TBH 😣

Cornchip · 22/06/2023 00:33

I wonder how long it would take to bring them to the surface if found, if it went entirely smoothly… a few hours? Less/more?

Realistically if they aren’t located by 8am GMT there isn’t really any hope of them making it, is there?

Awfully sad. Been following for days now and I really hoped there would be something by now. I am appalled by some of the comments I’ve seen on social media as well. Some really horrible individuals out there who have shown their true colours.

Probably been posted already but a very poignant interview with Nargeolet the French diver on board the Titan speculating about what could go wrong and how they might die. I think he would have been a very calming influence.

As a claustrophobic person, you could not pay me to enter that contraption, especially given the fact that you are bolted in from the outside and have no means of exiting without external assistance. To me, voluntarily participating in this is foolish and tempting fate.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/06/2023 00:40

So when they say oxygen may run out at 11am tomorrow, is that local time? (i.e time in Canada) so actually 2.30pm here in the UK?

Supersad. He seems like a good man as well as incredibly experienced. He will be a huge loss if the worst happens.

Nargeolet seems such a kind, calm soul from that interview.
So...the cold.

If they die of hypothermia, would that just make them fall asleep and not awaken?
I wonder of Nargolet had a premonition here..

They don't really know how much oxygen remains because the precise specs of the craft are unknown, as is the number of oxygen cylinders on board.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/06/2023 00:50

I'd be astonished if hyperthermia could be their friend.

It would be vanishingly unlikely to be a factor. However, in cold water drownings, HCPs don't stop trying to save your life until you are 'warm and dead' because 'a cold and dead' person still has a chance. Everything slows down and this can save you. Cold water submersion is 'better' in some circumstances. A very cold, unconscious person uses far less O2 than a warm, talking, walking one.

It's not going to help them though, realistically.

Yes, often after 'paradoxical undressing' where the person starts to feel very hot and removes their clothes.

It was the BBC's muddling up of hypo/hyper I was referring to.

Paradoxical undressing is strange..Perhaps the hypothalamus {?} just gets confused and thinks the body is hot?.

I seem to recall it's something to do with a combination of delirium and damaged nerves.

Sorry, I've seen - and had forgetten - it's 11am our time. Was grasping at straws hoping they might have a bit longer.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 00:54

I am very encouraged by the news of the banging distress signal still being heard. The Victor 6000 arriving and the crew of the Atalante working in tandem with the crew and equipment of Atlantic Horizon is their best hope yet.

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 00:57

But in cases of paradoxical undressing or hypothermia you still have oxygen and breathing however shallowly. Not so in Titan if the air runs out.
