Badabingbadaboomm · 21/06/2023 19:00

OP of the last thread has said she has to pop out so making this one as we’re almost full on the 2nd thread.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

@TokyoStories there is a saying in some fields, you are not dead until you are warm and dead.

Rapunzzel · 21/06/2023 23:46

I'm what most Daily Mail readers would call 'Woke' and I can understand the media interest, it doesn't make me angry. A billionaire and multi millionare and his son trapped on a vanity trip to look at the wreck of the Titanic, paying over a quarter of a million a ticket. But beyond that, its just a fucking horrifc way to die. As a human this breaks my heart, I wouldn't want people I despise to die like that, never mind an innocent teenage boy

Agree. I'm poor as a church mouse in my little home with the bills piling up.
But I'd give all my saved money if it would make a difference and save their lives.
But it won't. It's all down to the technology in place for these deep sea dives.
Chucking money at this is not going to help.

SunshinyDay1 · 21/06/2023 23:48

The whole thing is baffling.
Imagine sending tourists 2 and half miles into space with an x box controller send scaffolding poles??

Everyone on board are very worldly people who have made their mad choices.
It's the 19 year old I feel terribly sad for..and his family.

Itsbritneybitch22 · 21/06/2023 23:50

Some of the jokes and the TikTok’s i’v seen are disgusting I really think humanity has lost all
empathy at this point.
Social media sensor everything, can’t even suggest someone identifying as a tortoise is a bit odd without being reported and having a warning but this is all fair game? It’s so messed up.

SunshinyDay1 · 21/06/2023 23:51

I can't see what money has to do with it?

Do people matter less because they are rich??

I don't care how rich they are as per previous post it's the fact they are adults.

It's the son who yes is technically an adult but was unfortunately influenced by dad to go I feel for. How much they are worth I can't understand the point.

Rapunzzel · 21/06/2023 23:51

I think this has to be the end of "paid trips " to the Titanic

Don't you just hope so? However, the world is full of idiots.

While thinking of those on board the sub, IF it's found I wouldn't like to be the one who had to open the 17 bolts to open it and see inside. It certainly wouldn't be five crew members all sitting up bandbox fresh, I suspect that it would be a highly traumatising experience.

So many are thinking that if it's found before the nominal expiry of the oxygen supply it will be a happy ending. Those inside are likely to be very very badly traumatised, however experienced an adventurer they are, by certainly having to contemplate death as a very real possibility, perhaps by seeing other crew members die, by the conditions that will have developed inside the sub.

This is a great story of a sub rescue - albeit not at the same depth and at a known location.

Yes, this was covered on one of the earlier threads.

I read that it was constructed with a material that is largely untested for deep sea missions bur is cheaper than the standard materials.

Still, you would have thought its not the craft failing, much more likely its simply lost. The search area is currently twice the size of Connecticut, dozens of ships go missing in the ocean each year.

Missing Titanic submersible built with NASA help

Engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama lent their expertise.

True.

I also don't understand why a NASA stamp makes it a "better" product.

Challenger blew up because of a failure in the heat shield.

Apollo had scrubbers fail

To mention but a few of NASA's mistakes....

I really don't think NASA should be used as some sort of "safety accreditation" 😬

I can’t stop thinking of what I’ll be doing at lunch time tomorrow and how by then there will be no way of saving them 😔

If the banging was heard from the equipment at the surface does that mean they aren’t as deep as the 4000km or could banging realistically be heard that far away? My heart sank this morning weirdly when I saw the news because I can’t stop thinking of them in there, probably knowing there’s no point but trying to communicate anyway, not even sure if people will be picking it up. If it was me I would be getting so angry just praying someone would come and help me (even if it was impossible to do) ☹️

I'm not sure.

There's usually a sort of "barrier", the thermocline; sounds from the deep aren't easily heard on the surface and vice-versa. But it's not an absolute thing. Passive sonar - a microphone in the water basically - can be VERY sensitive, honed by decades of military use.

Something that's bugging me is how the oxygen supply works. At that depth there's no way the sub can vent gas. Do they just open an oxygen tank and allow the internal pressure to rise? Which would explain why that ship with a hyperbaric chamber might be important. Or is gas taken out of the air to compensate, maybe by whatever scrubs the CO2?

Soapyspuds · 22/06/2023 00:01

I'm totally sickened by the public and media's interest in this story. Where's the hysteria when a migrant boat disappears at sea? Why not the huge scramble of rescue crews desperately trying to save 100s of people, including babies and children

First point. Media interest

The media continue reporting where there is public interest. If the public are not interested then the story goes away. The public are interested because this is a very rare and unusual situation. How often does a little submarine head 12,000 feet under the sea and get lost? How often does a migrant boat sink?

Second point. Resue

The is a huge scramble of rescue crews because this is a specialist operation it is not a case of sending a coastguard rescue team. This is partly exacerbated by the media interest in that they are relaying everything that is happening. Whereas ultimately there is not a lot of public interest when a migrant boat disappears hence you do not have all the details through umpteen media outlets and articles.

The more I read this story the more absurd it gets. The step son of the billionaire guy is tweeting stuff like this:

Fuck me, that thread. Am guessing the step son isn't too close to his step father.......

Thread 3 😳 Ffs.

I'm totally sickened by the public and media's interest in this story.

Where's the hysteria when a migrant boat disappears at sea?
Why not the huge scramble of rescue crews desperately trying to save 100s of people, including babies and children?

Do only rich, white people matter?
They are under the sea because they chose to go on an extravagant and unnecessary trip.
Asylum seekers don't have such privileges.

Others have address this. It's because it's an ongoing rescue situation with the will-they-won't-they survive question. Mine collapses, the Thai cave expedition, even earthquakes get similar exposure.

The migrant boat sinking, as tragic and scandalous as that was, had essentially already happened by the time the news got hold of it with the people on the boat either rescued or presumed dead. (And it did get quite a lot of coverage.)

And because it's unusual. Common things don't make the news and sadly a boat of refugees sinking has now become rather common.

At the same time your space engineer has to make things that can withstand bits of rock travelling through space at around 20,000 miles per hour, so they do know a thing or two about strength.

gemstoneju · 22/06/2023 00:06

Is there anything else that could be making the 'noises'? Surely the ocean is full of very large creatures moving about at that depth, and the searchers did say there was a lot of metal. Christ, there must be a ton of stuff off Newfoundland dating back to the battle of the Atlantic alone.

Soapyspuds · 22/06/2023 00:09

Third point. Engagement

Much of the interest is coming from the angle of 'will they? won't they?' This is happening in real time which is a large part of the public interest.

Do you forget the Tham Luang cave rescue? The people trapped were neither rich nor white. Yet the updates were all over the media because it was a dynamic situation and a huge part of the interest was due to the unknown outcome that was playing out in front of peoples eyes.

I was wondering about that myself. Because yeah, submersibles don't usually need to be super-light and a simple pill shape is the best. It almost seemed like they just used carbon fibre to be gee-whiz "high tech". But weight out of the water would make sense too.

NotBotheredAnymore · 22/06/2023 00:18

Ooof.. I was hoping that they might have been located by now.

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 00:22

I thought the pill shape was less robust at pressure than a sphere which distributes pressure evenly. The Pisces III submersible used lithium hydroxide to scrub the CO2 out of the air - I'm not sure what provision if any would be current for Titan.

Anyway, I guess Stockton Rush has plenty of time to apologise for his amusing bravado as the reality started to sink in amongst his select passengers about their predicament....
