Thanks, but I don't think this is legit somehow...

Fizbosshoes · 21/06/2023 23:11

I think there is a lot of interest in the story because there is a lot of media coverage

I think because it's an ongoing situation and because it feels like there's no hope and yet there is a rescue mission ....and that if they find someone alive that will be a massive miraculous and (unusually) a good news story. In the same way the (non white, non millionaire) Thai teenagers in the cave were rescued a few years ago....or if someone is found after being trapped in an earthquake for an inconceivable long time.

With migrant boats usually the story is reported (in a brief way) unfortunately after the people have already perished. So there isn't the same engagement as in "what's going to happen next...?" That does not mean people don't feel sad or think it's less of a tragedy.

Thread 3 😳 Ffs.

I'm totally sickened by the public and media's interest in this story.

Where's the hysteria when a migrant boat disappears at sea?
Why not the huge scramble of rescue crews desperately trying to save 100s of people, including babies and children?

Do only rich, white people matter?
They are under the sea because they chose to go on an extravagant and unnecessary trip.
Asylum seekers don't have such privileges.

not this shit again. It’s not only white people on the sub. Racist.

Milkbottle2000 · 21/06/2023 23:12

What a horrifc nightmare-ish story, I can't stop thinking about this.

To suffocate in a tiny tincan over the course of 4-5 days can in the middle of the ocean, no real bathroom or substantial food supply, can't even stand up. It makes me physically sick just thinking about it.

You'd go to prison if you did that to an animal, it sounds like a Nazi experiment in fact.

The worst part must be they are powerful rich men, used to being in control, power and to just to sit in a tiny tin can waiting to die, Christ.....with the man responsbile sitting in front of you. To me that's a good scenario if you were trying to recreate hell.

I'm what most Daily Mail readers would call 'Woke' and I can understand the media interest, it doesn't make me angry. A billionaire and multi millionare and his son trapped on a vanity trip to look at the wreck of the Titanic, paying over a quarter of a million a ticket. But beyond that, its just a fucking horrifc way to die. As a human this breaks my heart, I wouldn't want people I despise to die like that, never mind an innocent teenage boy.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/06/2023 23:09

I don't like to speculate on that sort of thing, but there's at least one extremely experienced diver among them. I'd imagine that's useful helping them conserve oxygen?

I don't really get this "conserve oxygen" thing. It's not like they can come up with a rota and take it in turns to breathe.

There are ways of slowing your breathing when you dive so a tank lasts longer. My dad could dive for twice as long as me, because I was shit at the breathing stuff.

LodiDodi · 21/06/2023 23:14

To be honest I doubt the sub lasted more than a few hours. The thing was knocked together by what sounds like a small obscure business with probably little to no testing. I reckon it became a wreck on day 1, probably for the best as I can't imagine anything worse than being trapped in such a claustrophobic space watching your life support quickly diminish.

hotpotlover · 21/06/2023 23:14

I feel really sorry for the 19 year old on the sub. Even he's technically an adult, at that age you're still very much a child and would trust your parent that they wouldn't take you anywhere unsafe.

As for the adults, I have less sympathy.

With their wealth and expertise, they should have been aware of the risks of the mission.

Still, I wouldn't wish auch a horrible death on my worst enemy.

This 100%

Asthebellcurves · 21/06/2023 23:16

@KnickerlessParsons Normally, we use more oxygen when breathing than we need to survive. Breathing techniques, sedation, limiting movement and activity, and staying calm can all be used to survive with a lower rate of oxygen consumption.

I mean I’m no expert but in order to operate a business you need to be licensed and surely passing safety certification should be a must for a dangerous “touristy” expedition like this? Like it shouldn’t be enough to just get signatures from passengers accepting they might die?

I don’t remember much from my law degree 10 years ago, but it was drilled in to us that places can’t exclude liability for personal injury or death. Those waivers may act as a deterrent to stop people suing them, but they aren’t enforceable. The sub company would have a duty of care to the passengers, so they will have a negligence case to answer at least, I would think (depending on jurisdiction).

cakeorwine · 21/06/2023 23:19

I think it's also the CO2 scrubber - just as happened with Apollo 13. How long can it keep removing CO2 from the air?

It's one thing to ensure there is enough air for so many days. But they also need to think about ensuring the CO2 can be removed.

Thank you.

The first 'hitting sound' will raise optimism as it is distinctly human. The second banging could be the sub itself hitting the ship wreck or titanic ship's own known sound that occurs down there which is how the titanic was found.

Butchyrestingface · 21/06/2023 23:21

Wasn't it the same sub used to 'orbit' Titanic on a trip in 2021?

Asylum seekers don't have such privileges.

The issue is that the Asylum Seeker situation has been happening for a long time. Multiple boat crossings, some of which sink and people die. People start to get sympathy fatigue when these economic migrants see that this is happening, that there’s a very real risk of death, yet still they do what they do. If we had these subs go missing as frequently, and people dying, then we would start to get sympathy fatigue - who in their right mind would go on another of these trips after this? They’d be insane….

Oh yeah, I believe you’re right, they can still get sued and most likely will.
I’m just wondering how are they allowed to operate in the first place, if they aren’t certified. I understand innovation & research is one thing, but surely to take general public in it for a fee, there would be more testing and licensing involved?

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 23:23

Yes I think the Titan has been on several previous missions as covered by the news and the Us journalists film of inside it and meeting the owner. But if there were structural faults then they could have lasted a couple of trips but imploded on this mission.

Unfortunately (and I wish you were right) the hull of this thing was part developed by Nasa and it may be obscure , but it caters for the richest and most powerful on this planet, millionaires and astronauts have all taken a ride on the sub. I doubt it broke apart, its more likely to be off course due to ocean conditions and the ocean is a very big place.

I don't think people realize how easy ships get lost at sea each year, I mean literally vanish.

You'd think that the thought might have occurred to these clearly very successful (so I assume smart) guys that if it took 73 years to find the Titanic, if something goes wrong their chances of being found in their tiny sub are not all that great.

Not all the people on the Titan are white. hth

In any case, perhaps you need to direct your ire to where it should be directed - at the traffickers who overloaded that boat so disastrously, the people who decided to put all those children in the hold, and the Greek authorities who stood by for hours before the boat sank and didn't call for additional reinforcements. By the time the news spread internationally it was already too late. If, by some miracle, people had been alive and trapped in an air pocket in the vessel, there would have been a huge international effort mobilised to save them. That didn't happen because it was already far too late to save anyone.

I read that it was constructed with a material that is largely untested for deep sea missions bur is cheaper than the standard materials.

BBC reporting:

"They're going to do everything they can to reduce their oxygen consumption, they're going to rest, they're going to try to be as relaxed and calm as possible because they know that too much activity will cause more metabolism - creating more carbon dioxide."

Dr Ledez also says "hyperthermia could be their friend".

"There is a possibility if they cool down enough and lose conscience they could live through it... The heart beat can be really slow when cold," he said.

"Could they go on a week after the limits? I doubt it. But some may survive longer than others."

I'd be astonished if hyperthermia could be their friend.
