I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

They can't stand up. Whether to go to the toilet or for anything else. But in fact they are most likely long dead by now. Hubris and idiocy.

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 22:55

No way to move the sub. The craft that can go that deep are if the same size. No means to attach a winch or cable.

The French unmanned robot can attach things, as it's powered remotely, if it can first locate them of course.

cakeorwine · 21/06/2023 22:59

You just have to wonder what scenarios they came up with what could happen to them and steps they could take to reduce the risk if it did happen.

Such as losing contact with the support vessel.
Ending up on the surface without a way to contact them
An accident happening so they would need to survive for several days underwater.

I think this has to be the end of "paid trips " to the Titanic.

Otherwise future trips might include the sight of the sunken submersible with 5 bodies inside). Which would be a bit like going on a safari and as part of the sight seeing, looking at an broken down tourist bus with a bunch of skeletons inside.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/06/2023 22:49

Exactly. I propose we ignore the derailers (and if they persist, we report them).

To be frank, I'm still trying to get over that poster who wrote that they'd been found. My heart lifted. And then sank even deeper when they'd made a mistake.

Same here- So irresponsible to put up a post saying the Titan had been found before bloody checking it out properly.

😩

I don't like to speculate on that sort of thing, but there's at least one extremely experienced diver among them. I'd imagine that's useful helping them conserve oxygen?

In case you missed it, the US Navy has this capability. They brought a crashed fighter jet up from about the same depth last year, and the jet was heavier than the Titan. The ship that did this is apparently already in the area.

notimagain · 21/06/2023 23:02

Even if it is too late, they will still attempt recovery of the sub.

Maybe, if it's found quickly and it's safe to do so.

I think we may need to be ready for the possibility any government sponsored search and recovery operation to be quite short lived once all hope of finding the five alive has gone..

Just came across the recording of the knocking sounds from the sub (providing that's what it is) and honestly, it's haunting. I have tears in my eyes.

Can you please share link?

evuscha · 21/06/2023 23:03

What a grim story. How is a sub that isn’t approved even allowed to operate commercially?

lynnbroad · 21/06/2023 23:03

I think you're right.

Do you mean reporting or are you saying they've identified it's possibly a recording?

If it's the latter, that's horrible! Imagine being down there with some kind of sound effect for some sort of titanic experience.

Either way this situation is my biggest fear and I know it's not rational because most people don't go in submarines but this is what I've always thought about being the worst way to go. I hope they manage to find them and get them to safety but I think that hope is dwindling.

I completely agree. The whole morbid tourist attraction needs to be shut down.

I have little hope these men will be recovered, and despite the fact I think this really is a situation of "play stupid games, win silly prizes" , I do sincerely hope that the passing away of the occupants painless.

I also think this story may have captured many peoples attention because it’s so much easier to imagine and relate to.

Imagining 100’s of people sinking in a ship is too much to comprehend.

But imagining being stuck in that claustrophobic space with no hope?

Or more aptly perhaps for this site, putting yourself in the shoes of that poor woman and imagining your young son and husband trapped down there where you can’t help them?

I think that’s it for me and it’s also the fact whether you’re a millionaire, billionaire or trillionaire makes no difference to your chances of survival in this instance seems really sobering. I’ve found myself feeling so sorry for them while I struggle to pay the mortgage on my little house or afford the food shop but I can tuck my kids in at night and we’re all safe, because we don’t have the money to do crazy things! It’s also the fact it isn’t a situation that’s already come to a conclusion (potentially) and just having to go about your day while they are going through that is so tragic

Everest climbers have been climbing past bodies frozen into the ice for years, which isn't dissimilar. "Green boots" was the nickname of one body that was almost a landmark until someone covered it at the request of his family.

Bucket list tickers aren't deterred by those sorts of things, is I guess what I'm saying.

MMBaranova · 21/06/2023 23:06

It’s not often something like this gets to me on multiple levels. I even woke from a dream about it last night.

hindere · 21/06/2023 23:07

Just posting this. It's due to arrive this evening at some point:

The Victor 6000 is being rushed to the search site aboard French research vessel L’Atalante, but is not expected to arrive until Wednesday evening EST — around 12 hours before the oxygen supply on the missing submersible is expected to run out Thursday.

A 10-foot-long, remote-controlled robot with a bright yellow back, the Victor 6000 has been described as a “flagship device for underwater operations,” by the French network BMTV, and is capable of reaching a depth of 6,000 meters (20,000 feet).
With the Titanic lying 12,500 feet beneath the waves on the ocean floor, the craft should be more than capable of reaching it.
A rescue would see the Victor 6000 accompanied by Horizon Arctic, a powerful tug and supply ship which has a large cable which the deep sea craft can take down with it toward the wreck of the Titanic.

Victor 6000 is equipped with a robotic arm, which could be used for dislodging the lost Titan submersible if it is discovered trapped within the Titanic wreckage. It can also attach the cable from the Horizon Arctic to the vessel to help pull it to safety.

I mean I’m no expert but in order to operate a business you need to be licensed and surely passing safety certification should be a must for a dangerous “touristy” expedition like this? Like it shouldn’t be enough to just get signatures from passengers accepting they might die?

Presumably there is a limit to how long the sub will remain intact even if it was OK to withstand the pressure at 4k deep that amount of pressure for a sustained period will sooner lead to catastrophic damage eventually be that days, weeks or months.

I don't really get this "conserve oxygen" thing. It's not like they can come up with a rota and take it in turns to breathe.
