Thread 3 😳 Ffs.

I'm totally sickened by the public and media's interest in this story.

Where's the hysteria when a migrant boat disappears at sea?
Why not the huge scramble of rescue crews desperately trying to save 100s of people, including babies and children?

Do only rich, white people matter?
They are under the sea because they chose to go on an extravagant and unnecessary trip.
Asylum seekers don't have such privileges.

A) By the time that news story broke there was nothing to be done. There is no element of hope about a rescue or technical solutions for the public to discuss. It’s just a tragedy.

B) It’s the titanic. It’s a situation that is many people’s worst nightmare. It is ongoing.

It’s a news story that is going to capture the public’s imagination. That’s just the way it is, and no amount of sanctimonious shouting at the sky will change it.

C) I really hate having to say this like their lives would be worth less if not true or as if it even matters but..the poor souls trapped aren’t all white.

You are welcome to start a thread on the migrant crisis if you want to and discuss it to your hearts content. Funnily enough none of the posters waving their self righteous boners around at everyone on the submarine threads ever seem to want to do that.

Almost as if bludgeoning others over the head with your ‘virtue’ is the main point of your posts, and not actually talking or giving a shit about migrants.

GottaGirlcrush · 21/06/2023 22:46

@otherwayup

Boring now

We are here for the sub and the people on it

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 22:47

Why do people keep derailing this thread with an unrelated story?

Moreover, why are these same derailers criticizing others for not doing something that they themselves haven't done (start a thread on the Greek boat collapse)?

GottaGirlcrush · 21/06/2023 22:47

@TheTERFnextDoor virtue signalling.... nothing more

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 22:48

The mirror is claiming the sounds could mean it's actually on the surface, providing the sounds are in fact coming from the sub. The fact that if this is the case, they still can't get out but can likely see the light of day outside is just absolutely AWFUL.

Asthebellcurves · 21/06/2023 22:49

Few areas of confusion here, just want to shed some light.

They do have some rations on board.
They have a bathroom.
The cabin is pressurised, so long as that hasn't been violated in some way, they can raise the submersible quite quickly without anyone getting barotrauma.
The estimate of 96hrs of oxygen assumes normal breathing, but several of those on board have training regarding minimising oxygen intake. This amount shouldn't be taken as a hard deadline: could be sooner, could be later. Also important to consider level of CO2 onboard.

So dreadful for those involved, must be awful for the families anxiously waiting.

500 people died off the coast of Greece just a few days ago. Desperate people, at least 100 children. No international rescue attempts for them.

I read somewhere (so this may not be reliable) that the publicity of this was intentionally delayed until there was little, if anything, that could be done to mount a proper/effective rescue.

NutellaEllaElla · 21/06/2023 22:49

Did otherwayup see the headline that the passengers were super rich and some they had to be white? That's quite racist. People of colour can be successful too you know

I'd like to read a thread on it if someone starts one

Exactly. I propose we ignore the derailers (and if they persist, we report them).

To be frank, I'm still trying to get over that poster who wrote that they'd been found. My heart lifted. And then sank even deeper when they'd made a mistake.

LodiDodi · 21/06/2023 22:50

It's a very unusual situation and its links with the famous old ship disaster is what's caused the attention. I doubt they'll be found alive to be honest, but I do think they might manage to recover the sub. Even though it's grim to say, we'll probably have a Hollywood release in a couple of years based on what they find.

I thought they had a toilet and a curtain

Tantaijin · 21/06/2023 22:51

I also think this story may have captured many peoples attention because it’s so much easier to imagine and relate to.

Imagining 100’s of people sinking in a ship is too much to comprehend.

But imagining being stuck in that claustrophobic space with no hope?

Or more aptly perhaps for this site, putting yourself in the shoes of that poor woman and imagining your young son and husband trapped down there where you can’t help them?

Not this again. Try reading this thread, or the last, where it's been addressed umpteen times.

First of all they're not all white. Secondly, it is possible to care about migrants meeting tragedy in sea crossings and this situation. Can't you see why it's piqued the interest of so many? Accomplished explorers trapped at almost unfathomable depths at the site of the Titanic. It has nothing to do with their wealth that we're hoping they're located and rescued.

Exactly! I must have missed the thread you started on the Greek migrant ship sinking @otherwayup . That was a tragedy. It was also a major news story. People can have empathy for two situations simultaneously.

This thread is discussing Titan. You are welcome to start another thread discussing the migrant crisis. I suspect you won't though.....

Perhaps a bit woo for this thread, but I’d hope that there might be some calming influence from titanic ghosts to help these men in their hour of need , even if it’s just in their heads. Or maybe a long dead granny to give a bit of comfort.

Ridiculous comment

Peonyblushing · 21/06/2023 22:51

Even if it is too late, they will still attempt recovery of the sub. It will become a big part of history and also if the sub was still in tact they would be able to collect phones etc as evidence which might have some last recordings in a hope someone might hear them one day.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 22:53

Just came across the recording of the knocking sounds from the sub (providing that's what it is) and honestly, it's haunting. I have tears in my eyes.

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 22:54

Sorry but the video I watched of the journalist being shown inside Titan was shown a plastic bottle as being the toilet. No curtain, They may have gone up one end to use it but that end is where the window is so not a toilet per de.

Asthebellcurves · 21/06/2023 22:54

@darkmodeon Yes, which is a bathroom. I don't think privacy is a principal concern for the passengers.

No way to move the sub. The craft that can go that deep are if the same size. No means to attach a winch or cable.

Snowy2022 · 21/06/2023 22:56

They do have some rations on board.

They are refusing to say how much.

They have a bathroom.
Using a zip plastic bag. Not meant to be used for longer than 8 hours or so , therefore things could be escaping everywhere by now. Also, considering they are weak by now, who knows, they might not want to stand up and go to the space made for toilet, but just do the business where they are seated. Their most important need is to conserve their energy supply (both O2 and physical strength to bang at intervals).

hindere · 21/06/2023 22:56

I agree with pps. If you've started a thread about the Greek migrants I will join that too. Is it in chat?
