I have just watched a truly fascinating interview on GMB with Dr Michael Guillen a reporter who was on a submersible 20 years back. It is REALLY worth a watch IMO. There is a +1 for itv if anyone wishes to catch it. It was a good 20 minutes long (with commentary and questions) I think (guessing). from Susannah Reid and Richard Madely. Very moving.

That's the chap I said about earlier, who went down with the Russians and got stuck on the propeller. I saw him in another interview, and it's obvious he's still completely traumatised by his experience.

In am online article, as I said earlier, the Russians were in constant contact with the mother ship, yet this missing sub were saying comms were virtually impossible. If they could do it 20 years ago, why not now?!

Karwomannghia · 21/06/2023 07:07

Brings to mind what lorries full of immigrants go through.

Tremel · 21/06/2023 07:07

Am I the only one horrified by the cost of rescuing this group of rich thrill seekers?

Yes, this is the man as you say. He is so eloquent and clearly distraught at these events. Just awful. Unspeakable.

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 07:09

It may not have been 20 minutes long actually- I sort of lost a sense of time watching it.

Peanutbutteryday · 21/06/2023 07:09

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 06:00

yes, same,

The more I read about this the more horrified and claustrophobic and anxious I become.

I keep hoping for a miracle.... I remember sitting in our hotel bar on holiday watching and praying when the Thai children were being rescued from the cave. Thinking it was totally impossible and then a miracle in the form of human grit, expertise, endeavour and resilience saved them (RIP to Saman Kunan and Bleirut Pakbara the Thai rescue divers who tragically lost their lives Thanks ).

Based on that I keep telling myself miracles do happen.

Bless them all.

I keep thinking the same about the Thai boys too. It was a miracle but they did it even though it looked impossible. But then I remember the cave was “just” a cave - and it still was a nude miracle to get them out. I’m not even sure how I can compare the ocean to the caves in my head. Hope my comment makes some sort of sense (a bit tired from the night feeds today!) as I’m not undermining the cave rescue at all, I’m just trying to say I can’t even comprehend the magnitude of the cave rescue to the Agni tide of the ocean rescue

Some of the "rich people" in the sub were paying for the research and development with their tickets. Research and product development needs investment, you know.

I agree with you but that view requires the ability to think critically rather than just be critical.

Peanutbutteryday · 21/06/2023 07:09

Huge not nude *

I would hope so but, sadly, I'm not.

I'm more horrified that you're happy to let them die horribly without attempting to help just because of how much money they have in their bank accounts, that says quite a lot about you.

FannyBawz · 21/06/2023 07:11

I just can’t stop thinking about the 19 year old

Do you really think that a business entrepreneur that has made millions by carefully making decisions and calculating risk throughout his life (from Wikipedia: Pakistani-British businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He currently serves as vice-chairman of Engro Corporation, director of Dawood Hercules Corporation, a board member of Prince Charles' Charity, a board member of the SETI institute, and a position in The Dawood Foundation... makes him look, I don't know, someone who probably has a lot of resources to investigate companies?) is going to jump into a tiny submarine and travel 2000 meters below sea with his son, doing zero research in the company and product he is using, and completely unsuspecting that the trip he is embarking in could be risky? It is theoretically possible, but I highly doubt it. Also, the CEO of the sub company was there, surely the person who knew most about the machine. Would he risk his own life in such a way if he thought this submarine was not safe? I think just saying they were all reckless is a bit of a simplification.

I don’t know enough about the people involved so not saying this necessarily applies to them to them, however I work in accountancy and some of our wealthiest and most successful clients are the biggest risk takers and/or are not necessarily the brightest individuals and don’t fully understand the risks they take so take risks that most of us never would, those risks have paid off time after time hence why they become very wealthy and successful. This would stack up with the wealthy individuals taking this unnecessary risk on titian.

Oh come on. This whole 'Explorers Club" thing is absolutely sick making. The disproportionate response from the authorities when we all know they'd be happy to ignore anyone with no health insurance who was desperately ill is revolting. I don't actively want them to die but what the hell did they expect?!

User34352515 · 21/06/2023 07:14

I seen on Twitter the step son of one of the men on board went to the Blink concert. He said its what he would have wanted him to do. He Tweeted from the concert. Don't know what to make of that to be honest.

If MN is anything to go by, relationships between stepparents and kids aren't always clear cut. All signs point to the fact he's about to become insanely, eye-watering rich so why not attend the concert.

I agree. That was a cold and heartless post.

Not necessarily.

Anyway we all handle these things differently

tigger2022 · 21/06/2023 07:16

If the company lied how deep it was suitable to go then they might have also lied about how long the oxygen lasted ☹️

Tremel · 21/06/2023 07:16

"Would he risk his own life in such a way if he thought this submarine was not safe? I think just saying they were all reckless is a bit of a simplification"

Being slightly reckless was no doubt part of the thrill.

RiffRaffBananas · 21/06/2023 07:17

Anyway, the Canadians have picked up banging noises which suggests they are still alive. This is grim. How can they be rescued? That poor kid on board.

Willmafrockfit · 21/06/2023 07:17

i agree somehow it feels worse that they can know hear knocking and yet they know oxygen is limited

MushMonster · 21/06/2023 07:17

I am wondering why have they not been found yet with all the modern comms and if they can hear them?
I hope they get found and rescued on time.
But, I also think that peoole should quit this kind of expedition. Just pay a huge amount to be taken to space, bottom of the sea, top of the Himalayas.....
If you go there, go as part of a research team, with full equipment and cover or do not go
