I see the first one is full, is there a new one?

It would be something if the banging was actually coming from the Titanic, some kind of community of long term survivors in a huge air pocket.

Emotionalsupportviper · 21/06/2023 06:29

That is only good news if there is a prospect of rescue. Realistically, that seems very low.

CrunchyCarrot · 21/06/2023 06:30

@aurynne While I, for instance, cannot comprehend why someone would live a completely miserable life by staying with an abuser year after year. But, you know? I don't begrudge the millions of dollars/pounds that go into fighting domestic violence and helping victims of abuse or come to MumsNet to comment that "well, they got themselves into it and knew the risk, why should everyone else have to get them out?".

For Goodness' sake! As a domestic abuse survivor, it is very much nothing like that! I was unable to get out of the situation for quite some years until an opportunity presented itself. I hated every minute of being stuck with someone like that. There is no way I went into that marriage thinking I was taking a risk. I was hoping for a happy lifelong relationship! You can't equate going on a highly risky submersible mission to the bottom of the ocean to a domestic abuse situation.

Having said that I don't begrudge every effort being made to save these people now. Yes it was a risky and probably stupid thing to so, but we've all done stupid things and shouldn't be condemned because of it.

What "research and development"?

They didn't even keep the submersible up to current specs, let alone "develop" further safety features. This isn't courage - it is recklessness.

I'm sure none of the passengers will have been aware of the owner's cavalier attitude to safety, especially the man who took his son with him. Many people are compelled somehow to seek out danger, but they wouldn't subject their child to those risks.

They absolutely knew, because Hamish Harper's friend has told the press how he pulled out of this journey. They had booked and paid a deposit before sub even built, but he was so concerned with the build and company's attitude to safety, he pulled out.

Do you really think that a business entrepreneur that has made millions by carefully making decisions and calculating risk throughout his life (from Wikipedia: Pakistani-British businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He currently serves as vice-chairman of Engro Corporation, director of Dawood Hercules Corporation, a board member of Prince Charles' Charity, a board member of the SETI institute, and a position in The Dawood Foundation... makes him look, I don't know, someone who probably has a lot of resources to investigate companies?) is going to jump into a tiny submarine and travel 2000 meters below sea with his son, doing zero research in the company and product he is using, and completely unsuspecting that the trip he is embarking in could be risky? It is theoretically possible, but I highly doubt it. Also, the CEO of the sub company was there, surely the person who knew most about the machine. Would he risk his own life in such a way if he thought this submarine was not safe? I think just saying they were all reckless is a bit of a simplification.

I've just read the noise is being heard at 30-minute sharp intervals, which is a classic SOS pattern in this kind of situation.

I just can't even. Knowing they are alive and banging for help. They must be desperate and panicked and losing hope.

I know. I thought oh they have a chance to oh no, that's probably actually worse because there's no way of rescuing them.

WTF. 🤐

MadameBrigitte · 21/06/2023 06:38

Is there a chance the submersible could be close to the surface? Maybe that would make a rescue more possible (theoretically?)

If they have known the state of the craft, then they have been criminally reckless themselves.

...with their own lives and that of the son of one of them? Just for the fun of seeing the Titanic? Do you really believe this is what happened? In my scarce experience with millionaires, they are quite happy risking other people's lives, but extremely cautious of risking their own, or their heirs'.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 21/06/2023 06:43

Noise travels incredible distances through water, and they have said although banging was heard it stopped some time ago. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack, sadly I fear no miracles will be forthcoming ( hope I'm wrong) even if they can locate it there is a next to zero chance they can recover it in time. Even if it's on the surface they cannot open the hatch from the inside.

😂

The last Titanic survivor died in 2009 at the age of 97 after being put in a lifeboat as a two-month-old baby, but you're suggesting a group of survivors might could've lived – and reproduced, presumably – in an air pocket for more than a century?!

I want whatever drugs you're on!

greenacrylicpaint · 21/06/2023 06:52

such a sad and hopeless situationSad
I really hope for a miracle but it's looking very unlikely.

survival stories getting ever more wild. like a mooraker type russian sub that's taken in the capsule.

SlicerAndEcho · 21/06/2023 06:53

The family statement makes the 19 year old sound very naive and young for his age. They said he likes doing Rubik’s cubes and playing volleyball. I’d expect that for a 10 year old. His mother must be desperate.

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 06:55

I have just watched a truly fascinating interview on GMB with Dr Michael Guillen a reporter who was on a submersible 20 years back. It is REALLY worth a watch IMO. There is a +1 for itv if anyone wishes to catch it. It was a good 20 minutes long (with commentary and questions) I think (guessing). from Susannah Reid and Richard Madely. Very moving.

QuintanaRoo · 21/06/2023 06:55

Made me feel a bit sick to be honest thinking of them possibly still being alive and banging. Because I really can’t imagine there will be a rescue. So more likely they will just run out of air soon. What a horrible fate, think a sudden, instant, catastrophic failure might have been better. Obviously if they do get rescued I’ll take that back! But they must be going through hell.

I am projecting massively but I wondered if he might have ASD. I have a 13 year old with ASD whose special interest (one of them anyway) is the Titanic and i am imagining a father wanting to take his boy on the trip of a lifetime.

As I said- projecting- but it's heartbreaking.

Imnotahoarderreally · 21/06/2023 06:57

I think some of the comments in the media which seem so very crass are made because most of us cannot relate to getting into that submersible and making such a perilous trip.
Therefore it feels more like a story than a real event.
My dh won't talk about it because it makes him feel uptight.
I'm fascinated, convinced that they will not be found in time and hoping (for their sake)they died quickly although with the banging that seems unlikely.
Whatever the outcome I'm sure Tom Hanks will be Hamish Harding in the movie. Too soon?

confusedlots · 21/06/2023 06:59

Does anyone know when the last banging sounds were heard? Obviously not a good sign if the sounds have now stopped, although it's expected that they still have enough air, so why would they not continue the banging if they could?

Has it definitely stopped? I thought the Govt memo didn't define a time period, other than to say there was a four-hour period where it was heard regularly.

FrenchFancie · 21/06/2023 07:01

I saw the news about the banging this morning and felt desperately sad - if there had been a sudden catastrophic failure then they would likely have not known what happened to them. This way, those 5 people are slowly suffocating to death, which is horrible. To know that you’re likely going to die in the cold and the dark….

PucketyPuckPuck · 21/06/2023 07:02

The reports of banging are just horrific.

Hopefully something miraculous will happen and it will be found on the surface today...but if they find it trapped or tangled in or under something on the sea floor theres nothing they could do anyway. They just as well be stuck on the moon.
