Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

1000 replies

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

Is this the one where Janine explains why a 56 year old needs a birthday party, but for millions of children it was illegal?

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2023 17:14

Thanks Duncin.

cakeorwine · 18/06/2023 17:14

For Janie

Do you think Johnson was:

  1. Aware that there were events taking place in Downing Street that did not follow the guidance?

2)Misled Parliament when he said all guidance was followed?

No matter what Jenkin might or might not have done, do you think Johnson was aware of events and if he was aware of them, do you think he realised that they did not follow the guidance?

"Is there a version of this ...."

Of course he misled parliament, the man's a lying bag of lies. It's a wonder anyone can find instances of when he didn't mislead parliament.

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 17:42

Anyone got any thoughts on Bernard's attendance at birthdays drinks do at the HOC? Folk in glass houses and all that

I have no problem with those allegations being investigated, just as I didn't have a problem with Durham Police investigating Starmer.

It doesn't change the fact that Boris Johnson lied to Parliament.

Yes, for all the misdirection and whataboutery, one thing is clear. Johnson lied and lied and lied again.

Thanks for the new thread!

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2023 17:53

Tobias Ellwood impressed me on LBC. I hope he sticks to his word. It’d be a welcome novelty these days.

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2023 17:54

Oh and thank you @DuncinToffee Smile

New to MN, so please forgive the idiotic question. Why do these thread's disappear? Is there a maximum number of posts?

Thank you for the new thread, I was so fed up with the other one disappeared.

IClaudine · 18/06/2023 17:56

Thanks for the new thread.

This pretty much sums up the latest revelations.

Sorry, after a thousand posts the threads close.

I'll be following the vote with interest.

As for Bernard Jenkins and Boris Johnson - two wrongs do not make a right.

Zonder · 18/06/2023 18:08

So is Tobias going to vote to accept?

itsgettingweird · 18/06/2023 18:13

Thanks for new thread

Zonder · 18/06/2023 18:08

So is Tobias going to vote to accept?

If no division is called we won't know.

If it is, we will get to know exactly - exactly - how many "supporters" Boris Johnson has. Bearing in mind we are dealing with the sort of people who will complain that they are forced to vote to accept the report as that is what their constituents want and that isn't democratic. Obviously no one here is that stupid. But they do walk among us.

itsgettingweird · 18/06/2023 18:16

From previous thread

'People were allowed to eat and drink for workpurposes.'

Exactiy! I've been saying this for months.

Eventually it's accepted Sir Starmer didn't break the rules with his campaign trail dinner.

SerendipityJane · 18/06/2023 18:20

Seems the Met are having to reverse ferret now too. It's a shame for law breaking MPs of all sides that their* abysmal reputation is in dire need of a PR boost. Who knows ? They might actually find something this time.

If Rish! had any sense (or support) he'd use what shrinking majority he has to pass an amnesty for lockdown breaches. Either that, or hope the next Labour government does.

*Could refer to the Met or MPs really.

Summed it up perfectly in 2 lines 🤣

User135644 · 18/06/2023 18:38

Funny how things change.

I remember numerous threads on here and through the media around 2019 about how 2020's are going to be the Tory decade, a Johnsonian golden age and how 'we're all Tories now'.

Quite scary just how fast and how far the Conservatives have sunk. Even the cap doffing and forelock tugging English are starting to turn now.
