Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

1000 replies

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

I am sorry that happened to you. Similar at my school, unless you were one of the kids from the posh area. Expectations were low for the rest of us.

It was a bit crap, but life is what you make it, and education never stops, it evolves with your interests.

The Rory Stewart stuff is on the podcast "The Rest is Politics". I've been having rather an enjoyable time going back to the broadcasts from round about June 2022 onwards.

Thanks @Quiverer I don't suppose you can remember which episode had what you posted about? I only listen to it sporadically.

Quiverer · 03/07/2023 10:05

It's an accumulation over a few episodes, so far as I remember, @Zonder

GB News really is Tory Broadcasting Corporation isn't it? I didn't know Esther McVey and her husband also host a show and are being investigated by Ofcom too but it's good to see a little bit of accountability.

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg

Ofcom to investigate episode of Jacob Rees-Mogg's GB News show

One instalment of Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg's nightly programme attracted 40 complaints to the regulator.

It does indeed!

itsgettingweird · 03/07/2023 16:06

Is it? It seems a perfectly legitimate question to someone who’s just poo pooed degrees. I’m happy to divulge that I’ve got two. Anyone else?

🙋‍♀️ I have one. I'm very proud of the fact I got it whilst raising disabled Ds alone and working FT at the same time.

I'm not sure their was much common sense in the decision to take it on as well but 🤷‍♀️

Ive also managed to do 2 more professional qualifications since too.

itsgettingweird · 03/07/2023 16:08

and education never stops

Agree. I always say education is a marathon - not a sprint.

Alexandra2001 · 03/07/2023 16:11

They are doing terribly in the polls because we had a pandemic that crashed the economy, the public are fed hysteria by the media so some believe it is all Evil Cake Eating Johnson's fault and Sunak is guilty by association. The media don't tend to get as excited by 10% benefit increases, cost of living payments, energy price caps etc

I'm in France atm, well away from a the very few riots btw and my French friends cannot belive how much we pay for energy, the state of our roads and the health service, 2 or 3 waits for a new knee or 36hrs in AE and £2500 to heat a house.. bought gasps of horror from our continental neighbours!

We were asked "You should protest, we would!" nope, Sunak will lock you up for 10 years if you try that!!!!

I m afraid the tories are sunk not because of cake or parties but because folk have woken up to the fact we are a lot worse off than comparable countries, whilst in the meantime, the rich have got a lot richer....

pointythings · 03/07/2023 16:24

Let's not forget to mention the car crash budget that made people's mortgage costs soar. Those meanie international money markets, how dare they!

StormShadow · 03/07/2023 16:34

In any case, we don't actually need to waste any time deliberating on whether the public would be voting the Tories out because of the wider global problems they didn't cause (covid, Russian invasion of Ukraine etc). Because there are so many things that are entirely their own fault that they're loathed for.

Cornettoninja · 03/07/2023 17:38

👏👏@StormShadow

They stretched themselves too far. All the Brexit guff that could have been hidden behind Covid didn’t have enough mileage in it to distract from
everything.

Boris loves a classical reference doesn’t he? Bet he conjures up images of himself as a golden, muscular Icarus when he has moments of reflection.

StormShadow · 03/07/2023 18:30

Thanks both. But you know, it's just so fucking obvious.

Zonder · 05/07/2023 09:35

Interesting @SerendipityJane I noticed some MPs still don't admit to being Tory on their Twitter either.

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2023 09:39

According to Felicity Mercer (wife of the Minister for Veterans) that’s because they’re being inclusive and they’re the MP for all their constituents regardless of political persuasion. You’d think if they were doing sterling work in their constituency they’d want to promote their party, wouldn’t you?

Sexual assault is boring according to Johnson

https://twitter.com/juliamacfarlane/status/1676621034261184512?s=20

One year to the day his Health Secretary and Chancellor resigned over his handling of the Chris Pincher affair (allegations of sexual assault that No10 denied knowing about) does Boris Johnson wish he had handled things differently? I asked the former PM. His response: a snore

Our full @onedecisionpod interview with Boris Johnson drops tonight at midnight - the conversation largely about Ukraine and UK foreign policy. A few questions I asked on his domestic legacy and nature of resignation is coming online soon shortly and also on @TheNewsAgents

The snore reveals little self reflection.
The glance & roll of the eyes to the other interviewer (male ) is just patronising.

Nat6999 · 05/07/2023 23:03

We're in the hands of a doom loop government, they are going through the motions but doing nothing. Parliament used to sit most days starting at 2.00pm on a Monday & finishing by mid afternoon on a Friday, now some days they are done by 2.00pm. Today at PMQ's there were so many spaces on the Tory benches, they can't be bothered to turn up. We have another 18 months of this unless Rishi gets to the stage he realises that nothing is going to get the House of Lords & calls a General Election. They have turned down massive chunks of the Illegal Migration Bill this week, maybe if they lose the two by elections later this month it may strike the last blow to kill them off.

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2023 23:04

We can but hope.

Even Sunak couldn't be bothered to turn up for PMQs nowadays. As the Speaker pointed out last week, he also seems to feel that the requirement to make major policy announcements in the House of Commons first is purely optional. He simply has no respect for Parliament and its function in scrutinising him and his government, probably because he's following Johnson's example.

Zonder · 05/07/2023 23:13

I just can't imagine them calling an early GE under any circumstances. I think they will cling on til the absolute last moment, doing even more damage.

StormShadow · 06/07/2023 07:00

Same. Historically, early GEs only happen when the governing party feels confident of a win. The ones who know they'll lose or aren't sure will push on for the 5 years. This has been the case for decades now. Turkeys don't like voting for Christmas.

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2023 07:28

Would Dowden or Jenrick have their hands quite so close to the tiller under the next leader? I doubt it.
I'm not sure who Mordaunt/Badenoch/Wallace (maybe) are close to within the Conservatives but I guess a fair whack of the cabinet will be out if they haven't lost their seat.
What's in it for them or their donors to call a GE?
I don't think it will go to January 25. But it's going to be at least a year isn't it.
