Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

1000 replies

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

New to MN, so please forgive the idiotic question. Why do these thread's disappear? Is there a maximum number of posts?

Thank you for the new thread, I was so fed up with the other one disappeared.

As said the thread closes after 1000 posts.

However these threads which are long running will often have a link towards the end to a new thread to carry on.

Welcome to the threads Grin

Funny how things change.

I remember numerous threads on here and through the media around 2019 about how 2020's are going to be the Tory decade, a Johnsonian golden age and how 'we're all Tories now'.

Quite scary just how fast and how far the Conservatives have sunk. Even the cap doffing and forelock tugging English are starting to turn now.

Easy to say with hindsight, and I wasn't here then, but that was never going to happen. They got that majority on the strength of Brexit and people being scared of Corbyn. The latter is politically irrelevant now. The former inevitably stops being a draw once it's happened, and even if it hadn't failed so hard there'd still be no incentive for people who voted Tory in 2019 on that basis to keep doing so.

Quiverer · 18/06/2023 19:01

From the previous thread:

Well, I'm either psychic or I know people who work in the nhs. Which is most likely do you think?

People in how many departments in how many hospitals, @Janiie? I know people who were working hospitals at that time, and they weren't congregating in staffrooms or doing the conga. Where they worked, there were pretty strict rules in place and they were complying. Unlike our Prime Minister and his colleagues.

'Wonder if this looks like a party for @Janiie or is still not a "party"?'

Oh, this was investigated by the Met and no crime was found to be committed. Just like Durham constabulary that is all folk are interested in you see.

It looks like they may be reopening that investigation as a result of the emergence of the film.

There needs to be a MET investigation. Did the police sweep this under the carpet or did those interviewed lie through their teeth?

I wonder how the video got released?
I also wonder if there is video of Wine Fridays.

And - what did Sunak know about what was happening in Downing Street?

Kiwano · 18/06/2023 19:09

They got that majority on the strength of Brexit and people being scared of Corbyn.

I think that's a point that has to be borne in mind always when Johnson boasts about the size of his majority and claims that the Tories need him because he's a vote winner. The simple fact was that, at that particular time, virtually anyone leading the Tory party would have won a hefty majority, particularly if they were prepared to lie to the extent that Johnson did. It simply doesn't compare in any way to, for instance, Blair's or Thatcher's majorities.

The British establishment has a deservedly very poor reputation abroad when it comes to uncovering dodgy dealings at the top. Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Blunt may all be dust to some, but very much regarded as what happens why your political systems is based around "the right chap" premise. And we need to remember that to some -certainly in the right places - Boris was very much "one of us".

At a guess, 40% of "Yes {Prime) Minister"* was rooted in "the right chap" sort of shenanigans. Remember they showed us how to rig an independent enquiry without leaving any fingerprints.

*Widely acknowledged by all factions portrayed therein as surprisingly accurate.

Anyone know what time the vote is tomorrow? Am loving that it's on Johnson's birthday. If anyone deserves their birthday publicly fucked, it's him.

StormShadow · 18/06/2023 19:45

It's the second thing on after the work and pensions oral questions.

https://whatson.parliament.uk/commons/2023-06-19/

They start at 230 but I'm not sure how long they're likely to go on for.

Alexandra2001 · 18/06/2023 20:02

@derxa
And what of it. People are allowed to support whoever they like. There's strange authoritarian vibe on these threads. Personally there's no one in the current era of politics for me to support

100% agree, people are free to vote and support who they like, without fear or favour...
So, you re in Scotland, slightly different for you but if people don't vote or vote for the status quo, then they will get what we've had.

I know you said you've done well from the sheep market since Brexit but in your opinion how has UK farming and fisheries done generally and how do you view the future?
Fwiw i think your Ms Batters talks a great deal of sense and way beyond farming too, she also doen't appear to be a fan of either BJ or the Tories.

Starmer doesn't tick all my boxes by any means, esp in regard to Brexit and the NHS (which seem pie in the sky)... but he ticks a whole lot more than the Tories do or at least this current iteration, who seem beyond out of touch and completely uncaring to peoples real needs, self absorbed.

BestIsWest · 18/06/2023 20:30

PMK - and thanks for the heads up on staged 3.

There is no way I would vote for the current Tory MP. She's a horror. DH votes LD now and I will probably do the same. But I have a big problem with TWAW and Ed Davey's stance on it.

I know you said you've done well from the sheep market since Brexit but in your opinion how has UK farming and fisheries done generally and how do you view the future?
I don't have a crystal ball. Brexit has had an adverse affect on many sectors but it's rocketing costs in fuel, medicine, feed etc that have been crippling to many. But the most worrying to me is the green agenda. Farmers in the Netherlands are being forced to sell up to reduce animal numbers. The same is mooted for Ireland.
Fwiw i think your Ms Batters talks a great deal of sense and way beyond farming too, she also doen't appear to be a fan of either BJ or the Tories.
She's great but she's the English farmer's leader. She like me doesn't understand this idea of relocating food production to other countries by making it almost impossible for British farmers to survive economically. You can't live on wild flowers.

Alexandra2001 · 18/06/2023 21:01

@derxa Tbf to the Dutch, the issue with slurry run off & ammonia etc is massive and its no wonder they need to reduce it, whether exporting their pollution via food production, to other countries is the best way, i'm afraid i don't know but farming, like all industries has to change & the producers are getting quite generous buy out payments.. i believe?

Brexit and changes in farm support are utterly ridiculous, we agree.

Good to know you aren't voting Tory!

LlynTegid · 18/06/2023 21:21

I have no intention of ever voting for my MP, though I hope tomorrow my MP supports the Privileges Committee decision. I have read the report and feel if anything the lying and the subsequent bullying of the committee should result in far more than a suspension.

medianewbie · 18/06/2023 21:28

The farmers in Holland organised themselves into a political party (BBB) and did very well in the May provincial elections and now have seats in the First Chamber.

Not that that would ever persuade me to vote for her!

If no division is called we won't know.

If it is, we will get to know exactly - exactly - how many "supporters" Boris Johnson has. Bearing in mind we are dealing with the sort of people who will complain that they are forced to vote to accept the report as that is what their constituents want and that isn't democratic. Obviously no one here is that stupid. But they do walk among us.

I was just asking because someone upthread said he had u turned from abstaining. I'm hoping he won't vote against?

cakeorwine · 19/06/2023 07:41

Be interesting to see if there is an actual vote.

As far as I am aware, it could be nodded for as long as no one says "No" when the Speaker says if it should go through at the end. If someone says "No", then it goes to a division.

Enter Lady NadBeth ....

Thing is, if she does say "No" and force a vote, then we will know - down to the spine - exactly how big Boris "support" is. And that really doesn't seem to suit the narrative Boris needs to continue. His only hope now, is there is enough space in the political landscape for two grifters and room alongside Farage for someone with zero democratic support to opine on others failings from an "if only I were in charge position".

Basically he needs to relive the Brexit glory days.

I suspect Sunak really really wants a vote - hence the pantomime "I'm not bothered" approach. Firstly because as noted it would show the paucity of Boris support. And secondly because it will mark out the MPs he needs to excise.
