What has the handyman done with my nightdress?!

I can't find my nightie anywhere! Had a handyman round this morning just to address a couple of patches of damp, one of them being in my bedroom, on the wall close to the en suite.

I hang my nightie and dressing gown on the back of the en suite door every morning, and on the other side of the door I have an old evening dress that belonged to my dm.

I was rushing out this morning and didn't think about moving the clothes off the door. Came back earlier to find he's moved my dressing gown and my dm's dress over to the hooks on the bedroom door. But there's no sign of my nightie.

Im not suggesting for a minute anything dodgy has gone on but - where is it?! Did I, without thinking, put it somewhere? If so, I still can't find it!

@BunnyBettChetwynnd was there still paint in the paint tin? I'm trying not to think about how the discovery of the poo came about ..,

I have my dead mother's dress hanging on a wall in my home. It doesn't fit, otherwise perhaps I'd be wearing it. It's beautiful.

I know two bereaved people whose spouses' scarves, dressing gowns etc are still gracing the odd hook.

It's not unusual to find ways to feel connected to loved ones who are dead.

And sadly it not just a small "conventionally attractive" subsection of women who are on the receiving end of the many flavours of male sexual harassment. Power dynamics and boundary violation are a big turn on for some males.

I can't find it anywhere - had a good look this morning. I (want to) think that he used it as a cleaning rag, but I'm enjoying the images conjured up of him wafting around in it at home. Or perhaps at his next job.

I think it's gone. My wedding knickers vanished at some point - blue lacey things, some tradie or another..... will never know. also a book of fairytales. I have probably had many other small meaningless things nicked over the years by visitors to my house but those two items were significant to me so I noticed and still mourn their loss.

Tinyplant · 14/06/2023 11:48

OP, do you have a dog???

My hound is known to pick things up and carry them to odd locations/the garden. The handyman could have put the nightie on your bed or chair and the dog could have moved it.

If not, the handyman is probably a pervert.

LadyEloise1 · 14/06/2023 11:48

Is it in the wash basket or the washing machine ? @Leolly

KimberleyClark · 14/06/2023 11:56

I’m another one who thinks he has used it to mop up a spill.

But it's silk, surely that wouldn't mop up a thing! Xxx

A friend of mine had their loft converted while they were away and when they came back to see it completed, they paid up and happily waved the lads off.

It was only later that they discovered plaster-dust hand prints literally all over their house - bedroom furniture, drawers, the clothes inside, her underwear, their hidden stash of “special entertainment” DVDs… and the DVD player. Cringe.

They were enraged but too mortified to make a complaint.

Catmuffin · 14/06/2023 12:36

You've looked under the pillow so I assume you've checked under the duvet and down the side of the bed too?

Ghosttofu99 · 14/06/2023 12:38

Many this has already been suggested but could you have put it straight in the washing machine?

hattyhathat · 13/06/2023 19:57

You're going to have to text him and ask...

lol, how's he going to reply? "I borrowed it and am wearing it right now"??

tattygrl · 14/06/2023 12:57

In my opinion, the most likely thing is that he's taken it. The fact he's been used by friends before doesn't really mean anything. People have all sorts of proclivities and kinks that nobody would be able to guess from their outward, public personas! I personally think he's taken it. Also you perceiving yourself as not conventionally attractive has nothing to do with it. I'm sure you're beautiful! But people fancy people of all varieties. An attractive older woman might be right up his street!

No he might say ah yes!!! So sorry! I picked that up with my dust sheet ill bring it round right away (wink)

JenniferBooth · 14/06/2023 13:14

That’s not normal behaviour. You lock your clothes away in a suitcase when a man is working in your house? I don’t think it’s the men who are the weird ones

You have obviously never lived in social housing where there is no accountability at all for what their contractors do

MsRosley · 14/06/2023 13:31

And just - why?!

Oh come on, OP, you can't be that naive.

MsRosley · 14/06/2023 13:32

He's done a Sam Brinton, I reckon.

Pollydollydoodle · 14/06/2023 13:34

Do you intend to ever have him back in the house to do more work?? If you do, I'd ask him ...... watch his reaction!!

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 14/06/2023 14:17

Of course, he's taken it.
Have people really forgotten that men (NAMALT blah blah) do things like this?

Probably used it to clean up his jizz..........

@BunnyBettChetwynnd OMG! Must take some doing squatting over a paint tin. I hope it was a 5L. Although sort of semi-considerate in replacing the lid 😂

I hope it wasn’t a Farrow and Ball tester pot.

PylaSheight · 14/06/2023 16:05

@intheatticwiththematches my theory is that he left a massive skid mark on the sheet and was too mortified to leave it for you to find, so took it with him.

Leolly · 14/06/2023 16:11

I thought I'd already posted this reply - if I have and I just can't see it, apologies!

I just wanted to say to @RavingStone that I'm glad she knows other people like me! I have my dm's dress permanently on my door because it evokes many pleasant memories of her. It's very "of it's time" and she had it made for a dinner dance sometime in the 70's. I happen to think it's a lovely dress, and if I could get into it, I would a absolutely wear it (not sure where to, mind - dinner dances are a bit thin on the ground nowadays!)

And on the other door in my bedroom I have one of dh's favourite jackets. It gives me great comfort seeing it there.

JaneBeyre · 14/06/2023 16:17

I think you should message him to ask. Just so he knows and maybe will leave the next woman's underclothes alone (if he did take it, which seems likely, he's probably not used to be asked as most women don't notice as quickly as you have.)

CoolShoeshine · 14/06/2023 16:21

But have you asked your dc’s? If it had fallen off the door hook they may have picked it up and hung/dumped it in their room.
