We all know what you meant by ‘terrorist attack’. You mentioned the Russians for a start.

Ah so it was a Gotcha question? Letting your mask slip a bit there.

RudsyFarmer · 13/06/2023 09:32

So I guess we are to assume a terrorist incident?

I always thought the likelihood of Russian terrorist in the U.K would be higher since we actively started arming Ukraine.

You mean in addition to the fucking Polonium and Novichok they sent us before Ukraine?
The Putin regime already considered it can do what the fuck it likes here regardless of Ukraine.

’In the UK we define terrorism as a violent action that: Endangers a person's life, other than that of the person committing the action. Involves serious violence against a person. Causes serious damage to property. Creates a serious risk to the public's health and safety’.

Seems to fit the criteria 🤷‍♀️

You’ve listed the actions but not what they relate to. Without that context most violent crimes would be considered terrorism when obviously they are not.

‘The Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism, both in and outside of the UK, as the use or threat of one or more of the actions listed below, and where they are designed to influence the government, or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public. The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.’

I don’t think we have had any hint of there being one of those motivations have we?

Drumbalina · 13/06/2023 12:00

BBC reporting the first incident as a guy stabbing a young man and woman. Possibly young couple on way home after a night out due to the early time. Very sad.

Lifeomars · 13/06/2023 12:01

YoSof · 13/06/2023 10:44

No speculation, just really sad about what’s happened in my city today and praying those in hospital make a full recovery.

I live in Nottingham too, thank you for expressing exactly what I am feeling.

Drumbalina · 13/06/2023 12:01

They have stated by a witness it was a black guy but that doesn’t point to terrorism anymore than it being a white or Asian ethnicity. Thoughts with the victims families.

turnthetoiletpaperroundproperly · 13/06/2023 12:01

Rishi has issued a statement of condolance ..would he be informed and issuing statements if it was something of a domestic nature? Personally and its my speculation only I reckon this was a dummy run which got out of control for a much bigger thing to come, It is far too random and sloppy and careless for overseas players, seems more home grown to me if it is proven to be terrorist related,

SD25 · 13/06/2023 12:04

please... almost certainly just a lone nutter. horrendous enough but don't need to imagine it even worse than it is.

I have no idea! That’s literally why this thread is full of people speculating 🤣

Quveas · 13/06/2023 12:20

If it's a terrorist attack, by terrorists who get up really early to carry out attacks before anyone much is around, then the government / MI5 are being woefully inadequate, because the official threat level is still only "substantial", which sounds kind of "worrying" until you realise that it is almost always hovering around there on the average day. Where there is a hint of real risk, as in one having happened or being suspected to have happened, it is normally raised.

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 12:23

@Quveas threat level in relation to where? The entire city? Or to the 'incident'?

Bubblyb00b · 13/06/2023 12:27

How awful, just read this:

"The man, who did not give his name, told the broadcaster he heard “awful, blood-curdling screams” and looked out his window to see a “black guy dressed all in black with a hood and rucksack grappling with some people”.
She was screaming ‘Help!’ I just wish I’d shouted something out of the window to unnerve the assailant. I saw him stab the lad first and then the woman. The lad collapsed in the middle of the road.

The girl stumbled towards a house and didn’t move. The next minute she had disappeared down the side of a house, and that’s where they found her. I’d say it all happened within five or six minutes."

My thoughts are with the victims' families ((

Nationally. A terrorist attack (or possible terrorist attack) in one place means the country as a whole is at risk of another. We get instant updates for security reasons. Nothing has changed today. The only exception to that is NI security alerts, which often don't impact on the mainland these days.

We're lucky nowadays that the intelligence services are getting very good at stopping large planned terror attacks. So people are encouraged to do small, quick attacks to terrorise. If they start to prepare, get gear, multiple people etc it's much more likely they will be stopped before they can carry out their plan.

EyelessArseFace · 13/06/2023 12:38

On the whole, since this has affected an entire city centre and is the top story on the news, it would be rather odd if he didn't comment.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 13/06/2023 12:44

Very worrying. Hope we get some clarification soon.

ThursdayFreedom · 13/06/2023 12:44

ODFODeary · 13/06/2023 10:29

Indeed , but it probably got a quicker response time

@ODFODeary yeah, maybe, but it would be far better to take them
out of circulation BEFORE they kill people.

if I hear 'lessons will be learnt' I shall scream!! They've had plenty of situations to learn from already.

BBC is reporting it, you must have missed it.

Yes, I heard about it on Radio 4 shortly before 9am.

I'm sure they'll be very keen to hear how you'd do this within the confines of the law, capacity and capability of the security services.

cptartapp · 13/06/2023 12:51

DS1 is at uni of Notts and lives in the next road to this.
He's just landed in Tenerife so unable to give any further info. Really shocked.

Sometimes we have to take on extra risk in order to do the right thing. Not like Germany appeasing Putin.
Boris may have been a bit of a tit, but he got that right and it resulted in wider support across the world.

With regards to certain laws I believe some agencies already has the required laws in place for certain situations

Arrest them BEFORE they commit crime you mean?

Interesting.

What colour faith criteria would you use?
