Anyone local know what’s going on?

Looks like a huge response.

@stayflufft

Do you think it's appropriate to be sharing apparent insider updates about a tragic incident on Mumsnet?

What good is it doing you telling people your FIL has journos outside his garage, other than sort of attention seeking?

People died today. It feels in such bad taste to be sharing this sort of thing where there's no benefit to the public, just a sense of getting kudos for apparent insider knowledge.

But the van belonged to one of the victims, didn't it? So how could your dad have sold it to the guy who was arrested? You've said yourself that the perpetrator stole it.

Did your dad sell it to poor guy who got killed, I wonder?

My FIL sold it to the man who died on Magdala Road. We initially thought he sold it to the perpetrator but information has since been updated - it’s a fast moving story.

Hmm

Why would someone come on to a thread and make this up? My FIL is in the van trade. He sold the van on eBay to who we now know was the man in his 50s who died on Magdala Road. He’s shaken up about the whole thing. The thought of a van he sold being used to mow members of the public down is absolutely terrible.

It’s disappointing but not surprising to find a lot of this thread to be speculation, or worse, people claiming to know something that turns out to be false.

why do people make up shit, or pass on made up shit?

In a word, racism

mids2019 · 13/06/2023 20:50

You don't get heads of foreign states, the prime minister and home Secretary making comment on individual murders unless there is a reason. Before Macron was prompted to give condolences he would have been briefed about the nature of the attack including the background of the attacker. It is was obvious given the scale of the exclusion area that these murders were atypical. I think it reasonable for information about the alleged killer to be released as this will help the public in their estimation of threat.

This was the work of one male.

Why are you rambling on about immigration, borders and deportation??

I work in the justice system. We do what we do.

Why are they doing it?
Why do bears shit in the woods
Racists gonna racist.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 20:50

@FloydPepper yes it has.

It is. So one wonders why you decided to use it to insert yourself in a tragic story…

From someone who lives in the city centre it seems to be a totally random attack on two students who were 5 minutes from getting home. My sincere condolences to all those who knew them. The atmosphere in Nottingham is very strange. Although my city often is in the news for the wrong reasons, it is a brilliant place to live and we will all pull together. I love this city and I am proud to live here but I am sickened to the core that two people who came to this city to study have come to this. Rest in peace Barnaby, the poor girl and the van driver. The evil man doesn’t even deserve a mention as no doubt in his sick head, online comments about him will give him a sense of glory and satisfaction.

I'm in Nottingham too, thank you, you have expressed what so many of us here are feeling.

He would probably be shaken up to know you're sharing details of all this online.

What a bizarre way to behave in the wake of a tragedy like this.

Multiple murders and a complex, ongoing investigation and you run to a thread online to share your (second hand) insider knowledge with complete strangers.

It's really unpleasant seeing people seek attention when something so awful happens.

Not cool

MakesMeFeelSad · 13/06/2023 21:00

The so called attention seeking is far less unpleasant than the racists and the ones speculating about drugs

They’re all pretty grim tbh

I feel comfortable thinking they're all pretty out of line tbh. This tendency for people to want to insert themselves into tragic situations is equal parts depressing and fascinating.

Why would journalists be at your fil door. He’s got nothing to do today with that van anymore. Would be the same as the journalists going outside the pub of where the victim used to go jusr because they went there and probably they’d know him more than your FIL.
im sorry but this story has nothing to do with your fil. There are enough victims with this attack and those are the people we should keep in mind and their family and friends

There’s no desperation to be above considering it. There’s a strong feeling that we shouldn’t jump to assuming it, or worse, stating “facts” to show it.

Poor families sending their children to university for them to be killed. How many more children need to be killed this way before something is done. It’s not right.

Probably just finished first year exams and thinking about moving into new house. So sad. His poor family and friends.

piedbeauty · 13/06/2023 21:30

Two students died. My dd is at Uni of. It could have been her.

I'm devastated for the students and their friends and families. And for the van owner who was killed. And for the people who were at the bus stop.

It's all so random, isn't it?

JustDanceAddict · 13/06/2023 21:31

Such a tragic incident. I know students currently in Nottingham and I also studied there myself and loved the three years I lived there. Very sad 😢

CremeEgg1983 · 13/06/2023 21:34

@Lifeomars I am so sorry you had to endure that at the hands of some monster. I am glad he is serving time but that doesn't undo what he did to you. It's completely understandable why you are on edge.

@Overthinkingnotdrinking I have to agree with you there. I am appalled at our justice system at times, all the way from family court to criminal court.

@monsteramunch I don't see it as that and perhaps a little harsh? The poster is just sharing their experience and if her father in law did sell it to the deceased man, that is going to make it a little more shocking for their family as her father in law would have likely had interactions with one of the victims and may feel guilty (although he shouldn't) for selling the van.
