From someone who lives in the city centre it seems to be a totally random attack on two students who were 5 minutes from getting home. My sincere condolences to all those who knew them. The atmosphere in Nottingham is very strange. Although my city often is in the news for the wrong reasons, it is a brilliant place to live and we will all pull together. I love this city and I am proud to live here but I am sickened to the core that two people who came to this city to study have come to this. Rest in peace Barnaby, the poor girl and the van driver. The evil man doesn’t even deserve a mention as no doubt in his sick head, online comments about him will give him a sense of glory and satisfaction.

Most of us here have children and I’d also guess a lot of us have been coming in after clubbing til the early hours as a teen/young adult. It’s just heartbreaking. They didn’t deserve this. I have certainly cried for them all today. I don’t know any further details about the man whose van was stolen but my heart is breaking for them all and there loved ones

It's all over Twitter - GB News source - not verified by the police

Ah, Twitter and GB news, those well known bastions of truth and evidence based comment. Saw the GB news clip, they are talking about a "reliable source" which could possibly be someone from the emergency services and if what they say is accurate they are releasing information that has the potential to prejudice any resulting criminal proceedings.

I'm so sorry this is so close to home for you, it must be terrifying. Also so sorry to those who have lost loved ones or had their family members injured.

Thank you , where I live is not the best, a lot of street crime and I myself have been a victim of a serious attack by a stranger who was given a significant jail term and is on a certain register for life, so I do get anxious as I know to my own cost that anyone can be a victim of crime at the hands of a stranger while going about their life.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 20:00

@JustGeorgie also someone is killed every three days by someone on probation according to a review of the probation service carried out in January this year. Again I would say our justice system is not doing a great job protecting people. I wonder what role in this functioning behemoth you play.

Oblomov23 · 13/06/2023 20:02

So sad. Ds1 still there, at Uni till Saturday. I was there myself visiting him Monday morning.

I havent seen this news but a reliable source is most likely an eye witness. I've been watching the news today and there are people all over out and about in the streets. Of course they are going to talk to journos and post on social media

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 20:09

@JustGeorgie I work with victims of domestic violence. Hence my low opinion of the justice system. But you’ve not actually answered any of my points.

GottaGirlcrush · 13/06/2023 20:11

Yes possibly an eye witness

And I live close as well, and?

We are all different and respond differently to things. A few years ago I was the victim of a serious assault perpetrated on me by a stranger while I was walking home from work, he got a significant jail term and is on a particular register for life. It devasted me and made me very aware how vulnerable we can be as we just do about living our lives. Hence my feelings today, what happened to me taught me that we can all have our lives turned upside siwn or worse by the actions of a stranger.

So you work with victims of crime and should know that the majority of crimes in this country are perpetrated by its citizens and yet you still immediately jumped to the conclusion that this tragic incident was carried out by an immigrant?

An eyewitness would not very likely know the country of origin and previous offences, this would far more likely be someone involved with the post arrest processing. If you saw someone getting arrested you would notice the basics but no way would you know who they were, where they were from and what they may or may not have done in the past. I saw a couple of lads get arrested on my street a while back (it's rough where I live!) and all I could tell you was that they were white, possibly in their 20's and they kicked the police and ended up being restrained. Who they were, where they were from and why they were arrested I haven't got a clue and it happened outside my house while I was cleaning my windows .

Lifeomars · 13/06/2023 20:21

And I worked in a custody suite for a couple of years so I am familiar with the booking in process and the way that PNC works to search for arrest history

Zanatdy · 13/06/2023 20:23

It’s just awful. As the parent of a child the same age away at Uni it made my blood run cold and my heart goes out to both families who were excepting their children home any day now for summer and to the family of the van driver and all those injured. It’s just sickening

stayflufft · 13/06/2023 14:10

My FIL sold the van to the person who has been arrested. Journos outside his garage right now.

The van that the perpetrator stole?

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 20:32

@JanesBlond do you know what per capita means? I would hope in the U.K. the majority of crimes are carried out by U.K. citizens. I would say if they were not we would have a bit of an issue don’t you?

Also it’s been reported the man is a west African migrant with a history of violence. Not me jumping too a conclusion, just responding to reporting. Which is allowed is it not? I’m sure there will be people saying it’s terrible to notice the background of the person who killed three young people yesterday, but my point is if this violent man was not in the U.K., those young people would be enjoying the sunshine today. But they are not, and their families lives will never be the same again. But the usual suspects are more concerned about policing the way the perpetrator is discussed then any policy being enacted that makes the likelihood of this happening again less likely.

FloydPepper · 13/06/2023 20:33

It’s disappointing but not surprising to find a lot of this thread to be speculation, or worse, people claiming to know something that turns out to be false.

why do people make up shit, or pass on made up shit?

RatMam · 13/06/2023 20:33

As a Nottingham student my heart is breaking for the victims

Where has that been reported? I mean, actually reported not someone’s speculation

Welcome to the Internet.

People try to make sense of things that seem so nonsensical. No doubt people up and down the country will be having conversations about what they think happened, it's just obviously much more public to write it online. It happens everytime something happens in which the police can't yet release the info (either because they don't know it or because it isn't appropriate).

But the van belonged to one of the victims, didn't it? So how could your dad have sold it to the guy who was arrested? You've said yourself that the perpetrator stole it.

Did your dad sell it to poor guy who got killed, I wonder?
