“liked”

Kiwano · 16/06/2023 08:03

The odd thing about those desperate to exonerate him is that they can only do so on the basis he has argued, i.e. that he didn't think he was breaking the law - even months later when the shit hit the fan and you would think he might have taken some legal advice. So essentially they continue happy to idolise someone whose sole defence is that he is extremely stupid.

A lot of them aren't even that coherent, it's just bleating about vendettas and Brexit.

VimtoVimto · 16/06/2023 08:19

Since 2016 I’ve heard interviews with Conservative Party members and on the whole they seem out of touch, and seemed to parrot headlines from the Express and Telegraph. I assume these people are the Boris diehards.

Jason118 · 16/06/2023 08:22

And a lot of them are relatively intelligent, makes it even more perplexing. It's not as if he holds any position of great power to enable supporters, or a great wealth. I love a good conspiracy theory, it can't quite draft one to fit this narrative.

Rhondaa · 16/06/2023 08:27

'The poster above who said it's cult like was spot on imo'

🙄

Many, many intelligent people can spot a stitch up when they see one, that is all. He was unpopular with the media, backbenchers. He was such a divisive character and sadly some were so keen to get him out it didn't matter what desperate measures they resorted to.

DuncinToffee · 16/06/2023 08:30

Boris Johnson LIED to Parliament

StormShadow · 16/06/2023 08:32

The interesting thing about Johnson is that even at his peak, he was never actually as popular as a lot of people seemed to think. Always been somewhat Marmite. It's just that he managed, that once, to convince enough people who lived in the right areas.

This is a good thread from Professor Rob Ford on the issue

https://twitter.com/robfordmancs/status/1583377750877818881

He was polling worse in the 2019 GE than May was in the 2017 one, for example. And actually, the Tories ended up with very similar vote shares and numbers in both those GEs, the difference was in where their voters happened to be located.

Parliament's privileges committee is a highly regarded commons institution, Boris only moaned about them, when it started to look like they were going to come down hard on him.

Cross party and no dissenting voices, apart from the SNP one who wanted a harsher sanction.

Johnson could of course have defended himself in the commons but chose not too.
His behaviour is like a kid with chocolate all over their mouth but denying they ate all the cake, he has ducked responsibility and is now shouting Trump style from the roof tops but unlike Trump, has run away.

He could have avoided all this by owning up at the first opportunity, instead he lied.

God, she's awful isn't she. So patronising and sneering. Good interviewers should be able to interview and at least appear impartial.

borntobequiet · 16/06/2023 08:44

The only desperate measures resorted to were by Johnson himself with his escalating farrago of increasingly unconvincing lies.

Notonthestairs · 16/06/2023 08:46

Interviewing someone means testing their beliefs. She's not paid to sit there and just listen to him wang on.

Unless of course you don't want any politicians quizzed. Not sure how that will improve the state of the nation.

Notonthestairs · 16/06/2023 08:46

Some people wont accept he lied because it throws in to question whether he has lied before - leveling up, 40 new hospitals, Brexit benefits etc. Much easier to accept conspiracy theories and that also gives the added frisson of 'dark forces' etc rather than accept you made an error of judgement.

Some people won't accept that he lied because they have personally benefited and/or their jobs are on the line (BCS as a classic example).

Some people know he lied but just don't care what is said in the House of Commons. Which of course will be handy for policitians in the future - afterall if you let this go I expect you will continue to let politicians lie in the future.

Be more like Laura Kuensberg?

Victoria Derbyshire is stating the facts. Johnson lied to Parliament.

There is a BBC interview with Anthony Eden where the interviewer started with

"So, Prime minister, what would you like to talk about"

as they lit a cigarette.

So I can picture he age you'd like to return to if no one else can.

According to iNews, Boris Johnson starts new job as Daily Mail columnist day after report found he lied to Parliament

SerendipityJane · 16/06/2023 08:56

Intrigued by the BBCs headline about "Tory MPs face a dilemma" ... it really is dissing Torys with a subtle twist. What "dilemma" is involved in holding a lying cunt - moreover a lying cunt who stole your colours - to account.

However, Johnsons appalling treatment of women alone shouldn't see many MNetters having a dilemma over judging his character. But it seems some have.

Notonthestairs · 16/06/2023 08:59

It's only a dilemma if they havent read the report and dont take any notice of polling.

Maggiethecat · 16/06/2023 07:48

Someone on Question Time last night said that Boris was very well like because he was able to connect to people in a way that other politicians can’t, and I’ve heard that sentiment expressed before.

But liking someone on a personal level does not mean that they qualify for certain office.
Despite his arguable achievements, history will not look kindly at him.

He has debased the office of Prime Minister and Parliament on so many levels.

Yeah…. Sounds like a similar description to L Ron Hubbard tbh.

IClaudine · 16/06/2023 09:00

Janiie's not going to answer my question about how she saw what was going on in NHS staffrooms during the pandemic, is she? I can on conclude that what she said had a whiff of the Johnsonian.

Do Wikipedia still not regard the Daily Mail as a reliable source?

I guess given recent discussions the last refuge for Johnson was the paper that supported Hitler. It would be puerile to photoshop an image of Johnson onto the famous picture of Rothermere (yes, Viscount Rothermere) smiling with "The Führer" as they called him. So I won't.

derxa · 16/06/2023 09:04

Covid can be caught in many ways, as a farmer, familiar with bio security,? you of all people should know how hard it is to avoid highly contagious viruses.
Our sheep are maedi visna accredited. The disease is usually spread by nose to nose contact. Guess what there are very strict rules about contact with non accredited sheep People working together will spread disease whether you are evil Boris or saintly Keir so I agree with you. The idea that Keir Starmer was working in a more bio secure way than BJ is laughable though . I get that the committee was looking at BJ's lies but the initial FPN for a 'party' was ludicrous. I suppose we should feel grateful that we live in a country where small transgressions like this are taken so seriously.

pointythings · 16/06/2023 09:05

Did anyone hear the interview with Damian Green on Today? Politest hatchet job I have heard in my life. Well done that man. Such a shame Boris ousted or sidelined those Tories who actually had morals and integrity.
