The expectation from Tory MPs I have spoken to is that most will abstain to avoid annoying Johnson supporters in their constituencies.

Thereby annoying everyone else. Good. Another nail in the coffin of the Conservative Party.

LlynTegid · 15/06/2023 18:00

I don't mind some MPs not turning up on Monday, as long as enough do so to support the Privileges Committee recommendations and vote them through. Or better still, add a meaningful sanction. If not removing citizenship, then a ban on standing for Parliament for a period of time.

StormShadow · 15/06/2023 18:03

I can see that staying out of it is the most that can realistically be expected from some MPs.

DuncinToffee · 15/06/2023 18:05

Now it's official - no matter what the deluded think

I will stick to that, we won't get answers anyway.

heartsinvisiblefury · 15/06/2023 18:19

Someone has just called LBC with a name beginning with J and said she is worried for Boris's mental health after he has been so wronged. 😂😂😂😂😂 not sure why I thought of this thread 🤔

LlynTegid · 15/06/2023 18:41

@heartsinvisiblefury I'm more concerned about the mental health of his latest wife, who is expecting. It's not too many years until her 40s when Mr Johnson will be probably looking for a younger gullible woman.

I find it hard to have sympathy, its not like he doesn't have form.

The best bit is that this came out on a Thursday.

In time for HIGNFY!

Why were so many politicians and advisors catching Covid if they were working safely? Keir Starmer and Chris Whitty for two?
I wonder how people will view this period in 50 years time. In Italy Berlusconi had bunga bunga parties and survived and Johnson had a bit of cake and was destroyed politically. I say good riddance to BJ but all this hooha is ridiculous. It's still all about Brexit isn't it.

Now you are being silly, this is about lying, on multiple occasions, to Parliament NOT about breaking LD rules, had BoJo come clean and admitted his wrong doing at the earliest opportunity, he would certainly still be an MP and probably PM.

Covid can be caught in many ways, as a farmer, familiar with bio security,? you of all people should know how hard it is to avoid highly contagious viruses.

I think I might let my Tory MP know that I expect him to do his job, turn up in Parliament, and vote in favour of accepting the committee's recommendations. He may well take no notice, but on the other hand the seat's a bit marginal so if enough constituents follow suit things could get quite interesting.

DuncinToffee · 15/06/2023 22:22

It will be interesting to see which MP's will abstain and where Sunak will run off to.

Jason118 · 15/06/2023 23:38

The thing that I cannot understand is why it's so important to some people that Mr Johnson is exonerated. What is behind all this neediness? What is it that he has that is so important to some people?

borntobequiet · 16/06/2023 06:08

That’s a good point Jason.
He has an almost cult-like followership.

itsgettingweird · 16/06/2023 06:59

That's a very good question.

It's not so much why the Tory's - we know people age to Al over political parties like they are football teams etc.

But it's the need to prove him right. To fight a giant a massive majority voice about his misconduct for him to be the wronged party.

itsgettingweird · 16/06/2023 06:59

Are tribal or should say!

StormShadow · 16/06/2023 07:05

But not very sensible tribalism. Because given the public view on Johnson and his behaviour, the most sensible thing for Conservative supporters generally is to stick the boot in. He's long since become a drain not an asset.

cakeorwine · 16/06/2023 07:13

Comparisons with Trump are interesting.

Trump looks to be the leading candidate for the Republican nomination - but is probably going to lose the support of many independents who are repulsed by his behaviour.

There is support for Johnson amongst some Conservatives (and Conservative media) but he seems to have lost support with people who other Conservatives as well as people who used to vote Conservative.

But there are members of the electorate who also have the same tribalism towards Johnson.

Same with some towards Trump.

It's the same with any leader past or present.

You get some who people will defend against everything and some who make the tiniest mistake and no one trusts them again.

It's really interesting from a psychology POV.

There are some, sure, but looking at the polling it's not enough to make sticking by him a good idea. Which is why most of their MPs will at least acquiesce to the committee findings, even if they won't actively support them. They've realised.

heartsinvisiblefury · 16/06/2023 07:37

I would love to understand the minds of those who, after all the lies and all the lies about lies, still choose to have faith in him. I can't work out the logic behind the unwavering belief and support. Money? Stupidly? Favours? All of the above?

Why even after proof he lied and lied about the lies etc. why wouldn't anyone think "I'll stand by him against everyone else"?

The poster above who said it's cult like was spot on imo.

It's like they're brainwashed to only see him as good and so cue whataboutery to drag others down because it's the only way to slightly raise him up.

It's actually quite fascinating. Even if tedious Grin

Maggiethecat · 16/06/2023 07:48

Someone on Question Time last night said that Boris was very well like because he was able to connect to people in a way that other politicians can’t, and I’ve heard that sentiment expressed before.

But liking someone on a personal level does not mean that they qualify for certain office.
Despite his arguable achievements, history will not look kindly at him.

He has debased the office of Prime Minister and Parliament on so many levels.
