I do wish the Beeb et al would stop asking for/accepting vox pops about whether or not he broke the rules.

They should be about whether or not he lied to parliament. Which isn't something most people in the street could say that they had done!

Vote confirmed for Monday - Boris Johnson's birthday.

Three years since the birthday party for which he was fined.

Perfection on toast.

The man who spent a lifetime thinking the rules didn't apply to him finally finds out that actually they do.

Can we get this made into a Tshirt?

cakeorwine · 15/06/2023 12:35

I commented on these threads a lot about the risk assessment and the guidance for Downing Street and what rules were they being told to follow to reduce the risk of transmission.

I wonder if we will ever see that?

Did no one speak up and suggest that "it was a courageous decision" to have leaving parties, birthday parties, wine Fridays etc during the pandemic? (to quote Sir Humphrey)

Tory MPs could be deselected for backing Boris report sanctions warn allies | Politics | News | Express.co.uk

Boris allies threaten to unleash 'bloodbath' for Sunak with wave of humiliating revolts
EXCLUSIVE: A source close to Boris Johnson has told the Express that the long suspension recommended by the Privileges Committee will backfire.

Senior Tory MP warns against driving Boris out of party
Livid Tory MP allies of Boris Johnson have warned Rishi Sunak that he is facing "a bloodbath" next week with the Government putting forward a motion for the Privileges Committee.

One former senior minister and close ally of Mr Johnson said: "It is going to be a bloodbath. It is shocking that Penny Mordaunt will be putting the motion for the Government on a parliamentary matter and that they will be expecting Conservative MPs to vote for it."
Even though it is a free vote, it is being claimed that MPs are already under pressure not to oppose the motion.
The former minister blasted Ms Mordaunt as being "poisonous" about Mr Johnson, adding that Mr Sunak will face "a series of rebellions" as a result of his actions over his predecessor.

My heart bleeds for Sunak, who worked with Johnson throughout the time in question, must have known that the law was not being followed and indeed broke the law himself and must have known that Johnson was lying repeatedly in parliament.

He is in a bind though, of his party's making. Support Johnson and the electorate will tear them apart even more. Don't support him and Johnson and the loons will try and tear the party apart.

Cornettoninja · 15/06/2023 12:46

….and he just can’t stop digging. JOB talking about how the committee have now found him in contempt for being unable to keep the contents of the report confidential before release and undermining his own previous apology for his treatment of committee members.

Notonthestairs · 15/06/2023 12:50

"Support Johnson and the electorate will tear them apart even more. Don't support him and Johnson and the loons will try and tear the party apart."

Yes. This is what I find interesting now.
I think he'll continue to try and duck direct questions. It wont work of course and will make him look complicit.
Fascinating that they are going after Mordaunt for doing her job.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/06/2023 12:51

Guardian reporting that the report recommendations weren't entirely unanimous. They were unanimous on the 90 day suspension but two of the committee wanted to go further and recommend completely expelling him from parliament.

Cornettoninja · 15/06/2023 12:51

As far as I can see the only route for the tories as a party is to recognise that they’ve been infiltrated and need a period to regroup. It’s no massive loss at this point, the country is in a few bumpy years, certainly economically. Why position yourselves to carry the can for that on top of everything else.

Since Cameron fucked up with the referendum they’ve been flailing. They need to concentrate on regrouping and mentoring the next generation of politicians who haven’t had their names tainted with the ongoing chaos of the last decade.

He is complicit. He was working in the next door office, and would have frequently been in 10 DS. If Sunak had any morals he would have resigned when he heard Johnson lie in parliament.

Kiwano · 15/06/2023 13:08

2) The Committee has contradicted the police’s own findings - setting itself above the law. The Committee has been so desperate to convict Boris Johnson that it has now said that all workplace events – thank yous and birthdays and motivational meetings – were illegal. That is insane, and has no basis in the law. The committee’s view is contradicted by what the Metropolitan Police themselves found - the police said that Boris Johnson did not break the rules by attending the farewell events.

I do hope for their own sake that that wasn't approved by his lawyers. Any rookie lawyer knows that the fact that police decide not to prosecute (or issue a FPN) is never a statement that they accept the person is not guilty. It just means they haven't satisfied the prosecuting authorities that they can prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

Senior source, eh? Cough Nads cough.

I wonder how many MPs actually need to care about the threat of deselection. It's obviously not applicable to the ones who know they aren't contesting the next GE, which is about 40 or 50 announced so far and bound to include more who are keeping it to themselves for now. Some of those who are contesting will know they've a low chance of retaining the seat, so deselection doesn't materially change their situations. And then there are likely to be some constituency parties who have seen the way the wind is blowing and understand how toxic he is, or who just like their sitting MP more.

"Former senior minister"? Is that Dorries or Rees Mogg retrospectively promoting themselves, or Patel?

Given what a damp squib it was last time Boris tried to rally his supporters to vote against the Windsor agreement, I'm not sure that that threat is necessarily as powerful as this person believes.

'What an amazing coincidence that @Janiieand@Clavinovaare both busy today and won't be able to share their wisdom with us. 😉'

Neither of us has ever been intimidated on these threads, we do clearly have other commitments so cannot post 24/7. Rather unpleasant that you would sneer when I said I was taking a relative to hospital.

This ridiculous report tells us nothing that we didn't know about the impartial committee and their impartial investigation. The committee had probably made their minds up before they even started. The length of the report, the almost hysterical tone makes the committee, not Johnson, an absolute laughing stock.

They overegged the pudding what with the attempted 90 day suspension, 'removing his pass' and look foolish.

<just popping to the post office if that's ok>

Kiwano · 15/06/2023 13:18

You meant the committee Johnson was happy with till he realised they weren't buying his lies, @Janiie ?

Do you really believe he was too stupid to understand the rules his government made, even though the rest of us did?

@Janiie how would you explain to someone who was not able to take their relative to hospital or be there when they were dying that it was fine for the Prime Minister to break the law, ignore all covid laws in his place of work and then lie about it?

In tangential news, Odey funds appear to be tanking.

Also nothing from Farage yet ? Maybe he's realising Boris could be bad for business.

Apparently 52% of the public believe Boris is guilty.
