Do you pay for Spotify?

SharkSip · 12/06/2023 14:50

I recently found Spotify. I knew what it was for a long time but I wasn't interested. I joined and paid for a monthly subscription. I love it. I can find music I love and I am discovering more too.

The idea of paying a monthly subscription doesn't really appeal to me though.

My partner says he uses it but he doesn't pay..

What's that all about?

Will he be allowed to listen to while albums or fast forward songs or shuffle?
Where as I have more control over albums.

I don't know what the difference is.

I used to be on iTunes and I had a huge collection built on my iPod. Then I got locked out of my iPod and lost so much of my music. I was so so so sore after that.

I have Premium and don't pay for it.

Perks of having an Android phone....

If you tap the shuffle button it has 3 functions.
shuffle off, shuffle and Spotify very annoying recommendations added.
A white box comes up to let you know which one you’re on.
Took me a while to find this out!

Mine only seems to have two - augmented shuffle, or just play the list.

I don't think I've missed an update (last was 2 days ago) but I'm just updating now and will have another look. On phone, if that makes any difference.

I still can't work out how to get rid of unwanted interloping playlists. Ones I've made have a "delete playlist" option. These don't - I can remove from my library, but they're still on my home page, annoyingly taking up space at the top. Ugh

But judging by the name of one of them, I'm wondering if DD's account isn't fully separate from mine (I don't think I ever saw anything from DSs)

I pay for it but I listen to music all day when I'm not in work don't watch tv etc. always got music on so it's worth it for me

StillWantingADog · 11/08/2023 16:26

My husband pays for “family membership” not sure how much it is but it is well used by us all.

maybebalancing · 11/08/2023 16:28

Yes, we have a family account. We all use it and one dc friend does as well.
It gets hours of use.

maybebalancing · 11/08/2023 16:30

We also buy a lot of vinyl but it means we can explore new stuff before spending on physical stuff

dancinfeet · 11/08/2023 16:56

yes- firstly because my two young adult daughters are also on the premium account, but because I use it for work- I’m a dance teacher so it’s really useful to be able to find any song/ keep class music fresh and interesting

coxesorangepippin · 06/10/2023 01:42

I get the 3 month cheap deal

Costs about a tenner

Then I cancel

Then 2 months later they send another deal

How does that work?

SquashPenguin · 05/01/2024 19:40

Yep and probably couldn’t live without it now! Use it for hours everyday. I think it’s great value. How anyone can tolerate the adverts is beyond me!

crazypiglady · 29/08/2024 13:20

Can I jump on & ask if it’s fairly safe for kids? I have a tween & a 13 year old? I know there’s a kid version for under 12s but that seems to be aimed at the very young?

PoodlesRUs · 29/08/2024 13:43

Why wouldn't you pay for something you enjoy? It's a small cost relative to many other hobbies, pleasures and comforts.

CandiedPrincess · 29/08/2024 13:43

gogohmm · 12/06/2023 15:04

We have a family account with 5 of us on it, good value!

We have that too.

napody · 29/08/2024 13:46

I pay for it- only subscribe to that and netflix- no sky, Disney, prime, apple. I love it- definitely get my moneys worth. You can listen to lots of good audio books too- I have the free borrow box app but that's a far smaller selection and you have to reserve them as you would a book. The free version was incredibly frustrating- I want to be able to choose what song I listen to fgs!

Another one saying.... you what now?!!

Disturbia81 · 29/08/2024 13:51

Yes I pay and it's worth it to me as I use it constantly. I've tailored my entertainment so I never have to hear an advert and that includes music 😆

There is an option to remove any songs which have explicit content. However be warned - a high percentage of songs you hear on the radio - actually are explicit, the radio version is just edited to remove it. You will therefore find your kids may not be able to stream their favourite songs. (i'm not sure if this option is available on the free version)

Personally I pay subscription for Spotify and I don't think I could live without it. I love the "DJ" thing which plays a selection of your own music and then throws in new songs it thinks you'll like. I've found lots of new music this way.

Also PS @mylittleyumyum You're going to have to come back and explain to everyone how you get it for free. I'm an android user and pay for premium - how can i get it for free????!!!

usernother · 29/08/2024 14:16

I pay for premium but still have to listen to the adverts during podcasts. Annoying.

SparkyBlue · 29/08/2024 14:18

We pay for a family account and to be honest of all the subscription things we have it's the best. We constantly use it. It's on at home and in the car and I'm just about to do some dinner prep and listen to a podcast. I couldn't live without it.

Why don't you just fast forward them?

LizzeyBenett · 29/08/2024 14:21

If you don't pay you get ads you also can't pick the order in which day an album plays on and you can only skip so many songs it's a pain which it's suppose to be so you will pay

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 29/08/2024 14:25

So sorry to hijack thread OP but Im so pleased to see you've raised the question of Spotify, Im such a technophobe. I have just checked mine and I pay for Premium but hardly use it because I am never sure if it's eating into my data...can someone answer this question please? If it isnt then I'll get on there and use it more often.

smallchange · 29/08/2024 14:27

We've got the family subscription and with me, dh, both dcs and my dad (shhh!) using it I think it's well worth the money.

The adverts drove me nuts, so even though I'm normally listening to my favourites on shuffle I appreciate it for that. Dh & ds1 have a gazillion playlists each for every occasion and dh likes to listen to albums in track order. My dad used it to download loads of stuff to listen to in the car for a big road trip he went on with my mum.

Iirc it does use data, but if you have premium you can download music to listen offline. No idea how much storage it uses or where though. But that's what I used to do when I didn't have a large data allowance.
