Do you pay for Spotify?

SharkSip · 12/06/2023 14:50

I recently found Spotify. I knew what it was for a long time but I wasn't interested. I joined and paid for a monthly subscription. I love it. I can find music I love and I am discovering more too.

The idea of paying a monthly subscription doesn't really appeal to me though.

My partner says he uses it but he doesn't pay..

What's that all about?

Will he be allowed to listen to while albums or fast forward songs or shuffle?
Where as I have more control over albums.

I don't know what the difference is.

I used to be on iTunes and I had a huge collection built on my iPod. Then I got locked out of my iPod and lost so much of my music. I was so so so sore after that.

Oh I do have a Roku box that seems to play Spotify without many ads, so that helps!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/06/2023 17:23

We pay a family subscription. I use it so much I couldn't cope with the ads and stuff

SmartHome · 12/06/2023 17:23

Family subscription here

I do. I find the adverts annoying. Family premium is brill and I like the fact I can listen podcasts as well.

It's about the same price as a CD per month so well worth it. Assuming bands and musicians get royalties from it as well?

CuteOrangeElephant · 12/06/2023 17:25

We have a duo subscription, for two accounts.

I listen to it 8 hours per day when working so its extremely good value for money.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2023 17:29

We have a family membership; well worth it for me as I have podcasts on throughout the day while I’m wfh, bit like having the radio on in the background. Plus I listen when I’m walking during my lunch break or after work. And when I’m commuting I download them.
Teen dds use it loads. Dh and ds use it to a lesser extent but it’s worth it just for me alone to be honest. Adverts do my head in.

grafittiartist · 12/06/2023 17:30

Family subscription here.
I always think about how much we save on physical media- I'd buy music every week before. It's definitely worth it for us.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 12/06/2023 17:30

Yes, it’s great value IMO

LAHallucinations · 12/06/2023 17:43

I've been using Spotify on my PC forever and I've never paid. When you're listening to songs you just need to click on the next one before the current one ends, and that way you don't have to listen to a single advert.

The free Spotify mobile app, on the other hand, is rubbish. I can only get it to play songs on shuffle and there's constant adverts. So I just listen to my iTunes library or YouTube when I'm out and about.

whatchagonnado · 12/06/2023 23:25

Yes definitely. I listen to it for 2-3 hours a day sometimes more. Absolutely love it. Love curating my playlists from their predictive suggestions. Love catching up with Womens Hour whilst doing the ironing.
I have the family version for all 4 of us.

What are people paying for their family account, I think we pay 17 per month?

AuntieStella · 11/08/2023 12:37

I have a family package for me and the DC.

Definitely worth it, as I'm a distance runner and have downloaded running playlists that I can use out and about without using up data or getting ads.

Only gripe is that the "shuffle play" now seems to have been completely replaced by "enhanced" which really annoys me as it inserts tracks I haven't chosen far too damned frequently (if you can turn off "enhanced" but still shuffle, I haven't found how!)

Also recently I've had about 4 interloping playlists - arrived out of the blue and I can't work out how to delete them

JustRingJoeDuffy · 11/08/2023 12:48

Yes, I pay for Spotify and have done for years. For all the reasons already mentioned. I use it for about 2 hours a day, so for me that's great value.

BodyKeepingScore · 11/08/2023 13:08

We have the family premium Spotify and it's the subscription that gets the most use in our house. I am a self confessed music nut though, as are dc and it's nice to be able to curate your own playlist and not have it interrupted by ads

EffortlessDesmond · 11/08/2023 13:38

I have a family account which DH and DS also use. DS pays for family Netflix account, and we also have Amazon Prime (mainly for free delivery). I think it's decent value.

Balloonhearts · 11/08/2023 13:42

I pay for amazon unlimited on one dot but other than that, I've not paid for music since I was young. I just download from YouTube.

RitzyMcFitzy · 11/08/2023 13:47

I use Spotify loads so pay the monthly subscription. Well worth it for me to be ad-free!

I'm aware that the royalties that Spotify pays artists is pathetic though so I'll also buy a digital copy of my fave artists' new albums. Maybe not Springsteen because he already has more money than he can spend in ten lifetimes. but smaller artists who are definitely not making £££.

If you tap the shuffle button it has 3 functions.
shuffle off, shuffle and Spotify very annoying recommendations added.
A white box comes up to let you know which one you’re on.
Took me a while to find this out!

Very helpful as I didn't know why I was sometimes getting unexpected tracks playing. Thank you!

daisychain01 · 11/08/2023 14:17

I use Spotify all the time. Freemans rate Grin

I love it for Playlists I've created for spinning and some of those collections "made just for me" by Spotify

Podcasts and meditation tracks 👍

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2023 14:20

Yes. I think it’s worth it for ad free. Love being able to make playlists like back in the 80s without the faff of mix tapes!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 11/08/2023 14:21

I luuuvvvreee mine !! And if I shazam anything I can add it on. Premium all the way 🥳

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/08/2023 14:28

I had been paying the £9.99 sub before it went up.

I like the album search tool as well as Spotify suggestions plus the fact I can download albums and play offline on my sony walkman mp3 player, I would not be without spotify or my sony walkman😁.

Listen to music all the time and podcasts through my echo dot at home, so its very versatile both at home as well as on the go!

hauntedvagina · 11/08/2023 14:46

I pay. We have the family subscription which is about £18 a month I think. 15 odd years ago pre Spotify I'd be buying 2-4 albums a month so this works out way cheaper. I like to skip songs and I don't like adverts.
