Do you pay for Spotify?

SharkSip · 12/06/2023 14:50

I recently found Spotify. I knew what it was for a long time but I wasn't interested. I joined and paid for a monthly subscription. I love it. I can find music I love and I am discovering more too.

The idea of paying a monthly subscription doesn't really appeal to me though.

My partner says he uses it but he doesn't pay..

What's that all about?

Will he be allowed to listen to while albums or fast forward songs or shuffle?
Where as I have more control over albums.

I don't know what the difference is.

I used to be on iTunes and I had a huge collection built on my iPod. Then I got locked out of my iPod and lost so much of my music. I was so so so sore after that.

Not Spotify anymore used to have it but swapped to YouTube premium I absolutely love YouTube and watch it on and off for hours most days out entire household does.

Singleandproud · 29/08/2024 14:36

I pay for it for DD and myself. DD uses it all the time and I view it the same as paying out for a CD once a month if we still used such things. I like to download music for on the go too.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 29/08/2024 14:37

No.
I can handle an ad every so often.

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins you can down load loads of songs for use out of the house so it doesn't use any data. Just make sure you play the downloaded list from the library or switch your data off.

MagicianMoth · 29/08/2024 14:39

I don't pay for it and for a very long time I was v confused by all the ads telling me to switch to premium so I could listen to albums and playlists in the right order and so I could skip songs, because I could do that anyway.

It seems like if I listen on my iPad or laptop the only downside of not paying is the ads, it is only if I listen on my mobile that the annoying "not being able to listen to an album in order and adding random tracks that aren't even on the album" happens.

I also still listen to CDs and vinyl at home (and CDs in the car)

It's honestly the best money I could spend. I remember in my first job I saved to buy a new CD every month, around 20 pounds. I was a huge amount for an album of 12 songs or whatever. I now have virtually every song available. The song radio function is great and it's helped my kids discover lots of new artists and genres. In the last two years in my house someone become interested in rag time jazz, guitar folk music, old school rap, 90s dance along with mainstream pop. It's opened our minds to so much.

Another one saying.... you what now?!!

I use an APK and downloaded Spotify through that. Signed in with my normal details and bob's your uncle. No ads and unlimited skips.

@SparkyBlue because I listen to them in bed at night and I'd have to disturb myself to do that. Some podcasts have lots of long adverts, so boring.

That's very annoying alright .

YellowphantGrey · 29/08/2024 17:22

I pay. 3 of us in the house use it and I get 15 hours free a month of audiobooks too which I always use.

Franticbutterfly · 29/08/2024 20:15

We have the family subscription. Myself, DH, 2 DC and my mum ate on it.

westisbest1982 · 29/08/2024 20:26

Yes and it’s terrifically good value. I buy a £99 gift card every year from Amazon, so it works out as £8.25 a month for Premium (if you pay monthly it’s £11.99). In between Premium memberships, I tried the free version, which was a bit shit.

Andnowshesatoddler · 29/08/2024 20:30

By the way I've just been on Spotify and got three months for free I've gone straight on to cancellation and it'll cancel on 29th November 2024 so no charges at all.

MotherTuckingGenius · 29/08/2024 22:38

What is an APK?

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 29/08/2024 22:45

We have a family plan too. We are in Ireland and for 2 adults and 2 teens it's €17.99 a month. It is used all the time so is good value for money for us.

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 30/08/2024 09:28

Hi, sorry I know people have confirmed you can listen without using your data but can someone explain to an idiot (me!) how I do this please? I pay £11.99 but don't listen to it much because I could never work out how to listen for free if Im out of the house.

Click on the circle with the down arrow in and I'm 99% certain that we'll download them.

Do you pay for Spotify?
Imanontoday · 30/08/2024 09:59

Yes, we have a family account, we socialise a lot so have music on when guests over and also I use it for playlists in the gym. I’ve a couple of friends who refuse and I don’t get it, they can easily afford it, love it, and when at mine always picking songs, for a few quid I don’t get why they don’t just subscribe, the free version is shit,

What APK did you install, please?

Robotnik · 31/08/2024 05:21

Yeah, Spotify works out as excellent value for me, especially since they added 15 hours of audiobook streaming to my subscription a while ago. I burn through that every month, along with hours of music and podcasts. It's also pretty well trained to what I like, and offers me new stuff with a pretty good hit-or-miss ratio.

Also, I don't know if this is something that happens for free customers or not, but Spotify has tipped me off when artists I like are playing nearby and I've seen some amazing gigs that would have otherwise passed me by.

MySocksAreDotty · 31/08/2024 07:54

Yeah same, I’d give up other things first. I second the local gigs function really helped me find cool things to do since I’m not on the ball otherwise 😜.

EveryDayisFriday · 31/08/2024 07:59

I pay for the family account. It is a Xmas gift to us all. It is used by the 4 of us everyday. I listen to podcasts all day at work, the kids have their playlists and DH has it on in the car. Tbh I didnt mind the free one but the paid for one is much better. I have shared out the last 2 paid accounts to my Mum and FIL.

Inspireme2 · 31/08/2024 07:59

I have a subscripton..since i use it daily i find it a treat for myself..
I have a lot of music and enjoy the Discover weekly music which is similar to my taste in music.
I have such array of music its great.

JoCorry · 31/08/2024 09:09

We haven’t paid for it in many years (possibly only had the free version before that) but now Vodafone are getting rid of it as an option on their Red tariffs, we’ll have to start when our tariffs next renew, alas.

Much woe after so long having Premium for free but it’s been a fairly easy decision to move to a family account for the same reasons given by PPs.
