For my new puppy.
I like Mabel and Ethel so far!

It's subjective, isn't it? I've always found it quite an unpleasant name, but when I was young "not on your nellie" was a common phrase. Not so now.

That’s true.
(Like Fanny…🤔)

EllaRaines · 17/06/2023 17:37

Ada.

Nell is a pet name for Eleanor
Rather nice, I think 🥰

I quite like Nellie, too.😊

Bideshi · 17/06/2023 21:45

Monty Don's golden retriever is Nellie. He also had Ned, another GR, and Patty, a Yorkie.

Goodness. Nellie! Years since I've heard that. So old fashioned and ugly - bit cruel to the dog.

Well the OP did ask for 'old lady' names and I don't think it's ugly at all. It's a lovely name and that's not just because it was my DGGMs name, who was my last surviving grandparent as it happens, she outlived all my DGPs.

My suggestion would be Rosa, or another vote for Dora.

We foster rescue cats and sometimes need to choose their names. We usually give them old lady/man names and quite a lot have come up in this thread, but I have taken note of some new ones too.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/06/2023 08:40

Or what about Luna or Carla?

ImAChChChChihuahua · 19/06/2023 12:52

Thankyou. She's actually a really easy pup. I've had her since Friday morning and there's not been one accident inside.

Ah Caramba! 😄

Reminds me of one of our cats - she was Pacolita Rosita Conchita el Gato (Paco for short).

I wish you a wonderful life together - and many, many years of it.

Ena (as in Sharples)
Hilda (as in Ogden)
Bette (as in Lynch)
Raquel (as in Wolstenhome)
Phyllis (as in Pearce)
Elsie (as in Tanner)

The Corrie names are the best!

You forgot Blanche - Dierdre's mum.

Evadne and Eunice.

I realised 6 months ago that I've been saying Eunice all my life, with the stress on the second syllable: youNEICE, instead of on the first: YOUniss

VittysCardigan · 19/06/2023 21:52

My Nan (96) is called Gerda. Oldest name i know.
Also had an Elsie, Ada, and an Olga in the family.

She was amazing - biggest cat we've ever had. Weighed in at over two stones - combination of large cat and sheer greed! She used to talk to us all the time, too, following us around the house, just "chatting", always very interested in anything you were doing and eager to help. We had her for 18 years and I still miss her (still miss every wonderful animal we've lost).
