Cringe expressions

I know this has been covered loads of times but here it is again. Feel free to ignore. Does anyone else positively cringe when reading or hearing people say 'would of' 'could of', 'should of' instead of have? It makes my toes curl 🤦‍♀️🤣

My lived experience. So f’ing pompous. There was a thread a while ago where someone was angrily declaring that something had been her lived experience of Butlins, I think it was.

Boundaries! And ‘raise your bar’ on here. Some people can speak only in cliches.

midsomermurderess · 12/06/2023 22:47

I’m also going to add ‘pissed’ for ‘pissed off’. I see it not infrequently here. Quite odd for a site with such a strongly anti-American bent. Maybe people think that, rather like ass for arse, it’s less rude.

"Momentarily" used in the context of something coming up very shortly. Momentarily means something happened for a very short time. You need the expression, "in a moment" for the former. Lauren Laverne uses it incorrectly a lot & it annoys me every time.

Oh God yes. Drives me mad.

Silverseas1 · 12/06/2023 22:57

I'm chancing things here & will no doubt be crucified. My other pet hate is regarding social media eg Facebook. It's the incessant & liberal use of the words 'Georgeous' and 'beautiful' when despite beuty being in the eyes of the beholder the photo is obviously hideous 🙄😂

Perhaps before laughing at someone using the term incorrectly, try and have a think as to the context they find themselves in to be using it in the first place. Likely to be one where the fucking spelling is the last thing on their mind, no?

Where was the laughing? I am a professional and hear these things from colleagues who should know better.
You seem like you're lots of fun though.

My spelling of beauty was a typo but feel free to correct anything else 👍😁

And the awful deliberate misspellings like gawjuss. What is that about?

I hate:
Grow a pair
That takes balls
Cojones
Etc...
Suggesting only men are brave, strong, impressive. Really fucks me off
Oh and '100%' . Ffs

Mistressofnone · 13/06/2023 09:31

I had an ex who say 'it's cringeable.. CRINGEABLE' like it was a real word. Usually he was on a rant so not the best time to correct him.

I'll take your 'grow a pair' and up it to 'big girl pants'. Who the hell talks like that?

MaryJanesonabreak · 13/06/2023 10:12

Incredible as in it’s hard to believe. Beyond irritating when watching auditions and the judges use this very lazy adjective to describe anyone who does a passable job.
Stunning as in you could pass out. Usually used to describe an outfit on a woman who is not very much covered up.
Posh instead of grand or expensive or beyond my means. Or does posh now just mean a better brand?
So easy to be irritated, I can remember being profoundly irritated when I was still in my highchair and I’m a granny now.

violinviolet · 13/06/2023 11:46

"Hun" especially between strangers online

HoogahToogah · 13/06/2023 11:48

"make it make sense' - pisses me off no end!
"The math ain't mathing"
I think I watch too many true crime bloggers on you tube

Beginningless · 13/06/2023 11:51

Haven’t RTFT so im sure it’s been said many times but - draw when it should be drawer. I think it irritates me as a Scottish person because maybe in some accents drawer would sound similar to draw but here it’s not even close.

Also ‘funky’ referring to smell. No. That’s not what funky means!

rumred · 13/06/2023 12:00

@midsomermurderess I have no idea. And are there other pants? Certainly not in this house 😁

Tidsleytiddy · 13/06/2023 13:45

Yes, everyone on Instagram is a “beaut” or “gorgeous”. No they’re not. It’s empty platitudes that make these people think they’re something they’re not. No one is capable of telling the truth or shutting the fuck up. So much fake shit out there it makes me cringe.

Wishimaywishimight · 13/06/2023 15:14

I really wish people would stop with the "when someone shows you who they are believe them", trotted out on virtually every 'Relationships' thread as though words of the deepest wisdom.

I Have to admit I agree with this 👍

Have you also heard "caught pregnant"? That was a new one on me quite recently.

No, this is the first time I've read "caught pregnant" - what nonsense! It makes it sound like 'pregnancy' is just hovering in the atmosphere waiting to be caught (or dodged!!).

There are so many ridiculous words and expressions in this thread and many of them new to me. It gets worse 🤦‍♀️🤣

Draw instead of drawer/Chester draws instead of chest of drawers. Phase instead of faze.

If that makes me a literary snot so be it (mispronouncing things never bothers me or grammar but spelling does).
