Cringe expressions

I know this has been covered loads of times but here it is again. Feel free to ignore. Does anyone else positively cringe when reading or hearing people say 'would of' 'could of', 'should of' instead of have? It makes my toes curl 🤦‍♀️🤣

“Cringe” as an adjective annoys the hell out of me, as does “chill”. Also any use of “whisper it”, which seems to be particularly beloved of the kind of fashion journalist who can’t say “leather” without adding “butter soft” or “white shirt” without adding “crisp”.

And prints are always ditsy and you never see a big black dress.

🤣 So true.

I'm adding 'a red lip" / 'a navy trouser'. When did it become acceptable to reduce a plural to a singular?

I also cannot abide 'I'm pissed that my friend did such and such'. It's pissed OFF- we are not living across the Atlantic (only my lovely work colleague from Maine is allowed this).

whatausername · 11/06/2023 19:37

When people on forums tell an anecdote and write "reader". E.g. "I went to the shop and, reader, I realised I'd forgotten my bag for life!"

A tiny part of me wants them to fall off a cliff. Would be rather unfortunate for the attending voluntary & emergency services though.

I also hate "the Mrs" and "hubby". "The Mrs" makes my toes curl. "Sainsbos' sounds stupid and "if you know you know" is in the cliff camp.

Davros · 11/06/2023 20:57

"...,no?" At the end of a sentence (see upthread)
Reaching out
Little man
Invite instead of invitation

lieselotte · 11/06/2023 21:02

Also - did I actually see "chazza" for charity shop on the charity shop thread? AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH.

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/06/2023 21:02

"Love you to the moon and back" - urgh!

CaribbeanCupcake · 11/06/2023 21:11

"Making memories"

🤢

MrsTwiggy · 11/06/2023 21:38

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2023 17:11

@MrsTwiggy , you say of as uv? As in 'Both uv you' or 'Uv the three, the first one'? Confused

I detest the use of below, as in 'From the below, pick an answer.'

No need to pull faces at other people's accents, I'm sure I wouldn't be fond of yours either Grin

But no, those examples are ones where I would pronounce the O sound clearly. But if I say, for example, "the first of January", the "of" sounds exactly like 've' 🤷‍♀️

sammylady37 · 11/06/2023 15:42

@ThursdayFreedom you don't have to like it, but it makes total sense. I've no idea why you think it doesn't

I don’t think it makes sense. ‘Today years old’. ‘Today’ isn’t indicating the quantity of time, it’s merely a specific point in time. I get that what people are indicating is that they’ve just learned something, but I don’t think it makes sense grammatically.

@sammylady37 grammatically it's horrible, agreed, and personally I'd never say it.

However you said 'it makes no sense', but now you're saying you understand what it means...

Grammatically it makes no sense, given that (as I said already) ‘today years old’ isn’t a defined period of time, but it is possible to infer a meaning from the phrase nonetheless, similar to how I know what my friend means when she types the grammatical abomination “that must of being so hard”.

"Making memories"

🤢

That's up there with "quality time". My hated one is "you do you hun".

Berlinlover · 11/06/2023 22:59

“My other half” when referring to their partner or husband.

echt · 11/06/2023 23:08

Use your words.

Aaaarghhh.

northerngoldilocks · 11/06/2023 23:12

'First come first serve'

No one saying this is playing tennis. When did it become normalised? It's 'first come, first served' - suddenly its everywhere and I really hope language doesn't evolve to make it the standard version!

Catspyjamasfit · 11/06/2023 23:16

JeandeServiette · 11/06/2023 14:36

"Bias" when "biased" is what is meant.

Ditto "cliche" for "cliched".

"On my behalf" when they mean "on my part".

Or even worse , ‘click’ instead of clique.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 11/06/2023 23:22

”I brought it at the shops”

ITS BOUGHT YOU BELL END🤣

Davros · 11/06/2023 23:56

I also hate it when people say "decimated" to mean destroyed, wiped out etc. it means to reduce by 10% (the clue is in the name) but it's become normalised 😡

Little man for a baby or toddler boy makes me feel queasy, also hubby.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 12/06/2023 00:34

“But hey”
Hey what? Do go on…

”Bless you”

carrotcaketop · 12/06/2023 01:03

"find your happy"

‘dirty’
Was perusing a menu, and saw a ‘dirty vegan burger’. Sounded yummy, but had to ask what made it dirty.
Why does everything come with some weird additional label, can’t it just be a vegan burger, FFS?

If it just says vegan burger, it implies it’s dull - which it probably is 😅

Gowlett · 12/06/2023 01:23

So at the beginning of a thread on MN / any SM story. Why not just begin the opening sentence as it is?

So, my DH went out early this morning.
So, MIL licked my toddler’s fingers.
So, DD used all of my posh face cream.

Vinorosso74 · 12/06/2023 01:30

We're pregnant. This winds me up as only the woman with the baby in their womb is pregnant.
Going forwards. Well we can't go back in time.
Chill time.

blueshoes · 12/06/2023 01:42
