Cringe expressions

I know this has been covered loads of times but here it is again. Feel free to ignore. Does anyone else positively cringe when reading or hearing people say 'would of' 'could of', 'should of' instead of have? It makes my toes curl 🤦‍♀️🤣

I agree with almost everything on this thread. There is one other phrase which really irritates me, and that I've only seen on Mumsnet - when people are referring to someone who they don't want to name and say 'my friend, let's call her Jane'. What's wrong with either naming the person, or referring to them as Friend A, B, or C?

Little man for a baby or toddler boy makes me feel queasy, also hubby.

Both of these. Especially "lidl man".

CaloundraBlues · 12/06/2023 16:20

Little man is awful, sexy little man is beyond words.

It's a child, not a fucking man and to put sexy in there makes me feel sick

Eww yes!

ThursdayFreedom · 12/06/2023 16:45

BrendaMcPherson · 12/06/2023 10:09

As another poster said, it's twee. What's wrong with child/children?

@BrendaMcPherson

because that doesn't distinguish the little ones from the older ones.

xogossipgirlxo · 12/06/2023 16:46

Some that are already mentioned:
little ones
glass of bubbles (during girly event obviously, lots of chitchatting etc.) 😬
any alcohol o'clock

SinnerBoy · 12/06/2023 16:48

VivienneDelacroix · Today 16:39

Both of these. Especially "Lidl man".

I don't see what's wrong with that; after all, without him and Lidl Lady, how will the shelves get stacked?

😃

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:10

Bubba or bubs instead of baby.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:13

Chester draws instead of chest of drawers. I thought it was an error or autocorrect but it was repeated in a post so clearly not an error.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:15

"Fell pregnant" and "caught feelings" both irritate me!

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:19

"I'm such a people pleaser". It's not the admirable trait you might think it is, it just means you're a bit wet.

Scalottia · 12/06/2023 17:22

Cam22 · 12/06/2023 13:27

Do you mean cringeworthy?

Nope.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:24

He "borrowed" me money. He didn't. He "loaned" you money.

Yes, yes, I've read on here before that the former is commonly used in some parts of the UK but it still bugs me 😄

Ooh yes. And invariably they follow that with (not her real name). Yes, we figured that out and can follow your complex method of rendering her unidentifiable, thanks.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/06/2023 17:25

"Teacher here". Why not just say "I'm a teacher"?

cheapskatemum · 12/06/2023 17:35

"Momentarily" used in the context of something coming up very shortly. Momentarily means something happened for a very short time. You need the expression, "in a moment" for the former. Lauren Laverne uses it incorrectly a lot & it annoys me every time.

MargaretThursday · 12/06/2023 17:41

Apparently I won't get appraisals any more, because "appraisal" is a negative word.
I get "talent reviews". 🙄

Gowlett · 12/06/2023 19:33

I actually saw “cozzy livs” on someone I know’s FB recently. As in, cost of living crisis.

Davros · 12/06/2023 19:36

My phone was "robbed"...

  • It makes my toes curl."

This one. I utterly despise it.

newtb · 12/06/2023 20:03

Prostrate when someone means prostate.

"Fell pregnant" and "caught feelings" both irritate me!

Have you also heard "caught pregnant"? That was a new one on me quite recently.

Okaygoahead · 12/06/2023 20:24

thecatsthecats · 12/06/2023 12:29

Guilty pleasure.

It's never dog strangling or 4am yodelling or kicking pensioners is it?

It's always nice biscuits or rubbish telly.

Brilliant examples @thecatsthecats !

Thursa · 12/06/2023 20:31

Sorry, not sorry. There’s always something…superior (?) about the way it’s used. Puts my back up.
