It clearly falls to me to say that while only 17 million of 66 million voted to leave, fewer still voted to remain... and the rest were complacent or didn't care enough to vote. I don't think it was undemocratic, or the right decision, and I still haven't decided whether it was right or wrong.

Anewuser · 09/06/2023 21:22

No doubt tomorrow he’ll be announced as a Lord. Party is totally corrupt.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/06/2023 21:22

@maltravers i especially like using the word “mendacious” about Johnson (no pally nicknames for me!) because it’s just the sort of word that would appeal to him and his Etonian cronies. Love it!

I don't think there are any safe Tory seats right now.

Well no, but there are some they're guaranteed to lose and some they could realistically hope to retain. Uxbridge falls into the first category, so of course he was too chicken to contest it.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/06/2023 21:23

I have longed to say this to Brexiteers and their ilk for ages: oh do get over it! 😂

Can't believe he thinks that highlighting the fact that only 17 million people in a country of 66 million (approx) voted for Brexit.
That only highlights what an undemocratic act of national harm Brexit was and how few people in the Uk really wanted Brexit. A very small fraction, Boris, and not really something you should be highlighting as part of your legacy.

This is a ridiculous argument. How few people in the UK wanted to Remain? Clearly fewer than wanted Brexit.

It was time for Johnson to go. Do Labour have a chance of winning either Boris or Dorrie's seats?

Crikeyalmighty · 09/06/2023 21:25

@StormShadow apparently he really wants Henley on Thames -

pointythings · 09/06/2023 21:26

@Florenz Boris's seat is definitely vulnerable. Dorries' not so much, which says worrying things about the people of Mid Bedfordshire. I mean, she's a bloody useless MP, constantly goes on about how she understands the NHS because she used to be a nurse (for about 5 minutes, she couldn't hack it) and my God does she write shit books!

Boris, absolutely. Only an 8k majority. Dorries, probably not.

And yes, his argument that 17 million people voted for Brexit nearly a decade ago is utterly unpersuasive. It's not a fucking get out of jail free card for whatever any Brexit supporting politician wants to do.

EffortlessDesmond · 09/06/2023 21:29

But, of a nation of 66 million people, 17 million voted, so 48.5 million approximately did not bother, or voted to remain.

Alexandra2001 · 09/06/2023 21:30

Yet another Brexit liar, who having wrecked the country, disappears off into the sunset.... took the uk for mugs.

lljkk · 09/06/2023 21:30

Churchill crossed the floor & was a Liberal for what... 10 years?
Is a reason he could command across the house respect.

Johnson is accusing Bernard Jenkins of all people, of colluding in an anti-Brexit witch hunt. Bernard Jenkins. Yeah right. 🙄 🙄 🙄

Florenz · 09/06/2023 21:31

Why don't the former Remainers start their own Rejoin party? I'm sure they'd do very well at the next general election... NOT!

Brexit is a done deal and most normal working people fully support it. The remainers are the one that looks like fools with their never ending whinging. They need to move onwards and upwards instead of complaining about losing a referendum nearly a decade ago.

Thats obviously true but it also shoots holes in the oft repeated slogan that the UK voted for Brexit... we did not, a minority did.

There's no need, we'll be moving back towards rejoining the customs union through the existing political party system soon enough. Give Starmer a few years. And you Brexiters won't be able to stop it.

An abstention is effectively a vote for the status quo. That's why in actually democratic countries major constitutional change requires special procedures and super-majorities.

Such a huge change should not be forced upon a country by the sort of arithmetic in that travesty of a referendum.

(And I'd include rejoining. That should not happen until 2/3 of the population and all major parties support it in my view.)

I guess pollsters don't ask normal working people?

Just need Keir Starmer to join him now…

EffortlessDesmond · 09/06/2023 21:34

I love Europe. But I don't think that being part of its sclerotic decision making process is an advantage.

He’ll look to be adopted as the candidate in Nadine’s constituency. Safer seat.

No thank you!

Trying to imagine your (qualifying) definition of 'normal'. Is it like a cross between the Addams Family and the Munsters?

jojo1067 · 09/06/2023 20:24

I listened to Nadine on Talk Radio being interviewed about why she resigned. Very vague but it's now clear that she knew her hero Johnson was about to resign as an MP.

I'm no fan of Johnson, his behaviour has been disgraceful, but I do believe the Tory party and the Labour Party are both frightened by his popularity and determined to get rid of him. I suspect they may rue the day.

@jojo1067

Spot on. Anyone would think there was a vindictive campaign against him. His opponents have had their pound of flesh, when he resigned as PM. Yes, ok, he has lied, and he's no saint, but do the population of the UK want their representatives to be choir boys (and girls)?
They are trying their best to ensure he never comes back into politics, but if I was in Boris' shoes I wouldn't want to. After steering this sinking ship through Covid, he is toppled. (Did everyone follow the 2 metre rule? My former NDN had monthly parties all through the Lockdowns, and the police never turned up at her door)

maltravers · 09/06/2023 21:36

It’s good to see that there is accountability for this scoundrel who thought he could get away with it because our system assumes some level of honesty and moderately honourable behaviour. On the same day as the Trump news too, I may have to have a celebratory drink.

StormShadow · 09/06/2023 21:36

Only if they were on crystal meth.

Next time, just stick to he knows what a woman is.
Its more convincing.
