Twenty thousand people died because Mr Johnson did not act, failed to attend (or dial in) to five COBRA meetings, was happy to have 3,000 people travel from one of the Covid hotspots in Europe to an event, and then discharged people to care homes with no isolation or testing.

Forgetting what is serial killing in all but name and who is responsible should not happen. The relatives of those who died at Grenfell are still awaiting justice and those of the 97 who died at Hillsborough had to wait over 20 years for even a limited amount. The families of those who died of Covid whose deaths were preventable deserve and should have justice.

A man who is alleged to have wanted to give an honour to his father. An honour to someone who assaulted his own mother.

fatimashortbread · 11/06/2023 09:50

Good riddance to bad rubbish. His resignation letter is appalling - he is going full Trump by blaming everyone else but himself. Trying to say the committee is biased when it has a Conservative majority including some prominent Brexit supporters is just another dangerous Johnson fantasy

This is really what is wrong with this country. This mindset that a person is to blame. Anyone but more ostentatious the better because then you have like minded sheep who will follow.

@Clavinova

Boris has gone.
Nadine has gone
Nigel Adams has gone.

We live in interesting times, don't we.

Reic0003 · 11/06/2023 09:54

Shall we add in Troubles in Ireland, Vietnam war, Korean war? Oh add in the 2nd WW whilst we're there.

I am really interested in why you think Boris was the best leader re: COVID 19. Please can you give us examples and explanations for your logic?

P.S. I am British but live abroad, in a country which took a very pragmatic approach. Will be happy to discuss once you have outlined your thinking.

pointythings · 11/06/2023 10:03

@Reic0003 if you're Prime Minister, the buck stops with you. It really is that simple. Boris fans are happy enough to blame Tony Blair for the Iraq war, even though the Tories enthusiastically supported it. Because he was the man in charge.

Boris chose to be Prime Minister, and that comes with responsibility.

Why don't the former Remainers start their own Rejoin party? I'm sure they'd do very well at the next general election... NOT!

Brexit is a done deal and most normal working people fully support it. The remainers are the one that looks like fools with their never ending whinging. They need to move onwards and upwards instead of complaining about losing a referendum nearly a decade ago.”

What a load of tripe. Most recent poll I saw showed that 60% of those who voted to leave now regret their decision.

Reic0003 · 11/06/2023 10:05

Probably the most sensible comment I've read today.

SerendipityJane · 11/06/2023 10:07

I caught a story of JRM warning the Tories not to block Boris return to parliament. I wonder what he would do if people simply didn't vote for him.

In fact the best way to keep Boris out of the House of Commons is to make him a Lord. Which could happen in Rishi! resignation honours list ....

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/06/2023 10:14

Florenz · Today 00:06

I think people need to let it go regarding Boris. He's not the PM anymore, he's not even an MP anymore. It's not healthy to go on hating someone, look at Thatcher, people were still burning effigies of her and blaming her for all their problems until the day she died and probably afterwards as well. People need to take ownership of their own lives, no politician is going to make everything better or make everything much worse. It's personal responsibility that decides your fate.”

Rubbish. Truss and Kwarteng decided the fate of millions with their outrageous policies. They were only there because Johnson was inept and corrupt.
It was for very good reason that Thatcher was pilloried for decades for destroying communities and sentencing millions of people to a precarious life in private rented accommodation. Her legacy is still
causing suffering today.

Whilst Boris was having parties (birthday or wine and cheese who actually cares) we were having a socially distanced funeral for a friend, no wake, no sitting next to each other, no celebration of their life, no comforting each other in the Chapel. Why was Boris allowed to party when we weren't?
How anyone can defend the man is beyond me.

Out of interest, what are your feelings towards Keir Starmer? Bearing in mind that Starmer voted in favour of Covid restrictions in the Commons (Corbyn voted against), didn't follow the guidance for constituency visits in Durham (guidance is different from legislation), ate outside, wearing a thick coat the evening before Durham (for the publicity shots) and lied about how many people were with him in the hall (Starmer suggested 'about 6 people', when there were 16 other people there). Both the cheese and wine gathering you mentioned above, and the beer and curry gathering were classed as work meetings and not fined.

Welcome back. Did you have a nice break?

Reic0003 · 11/06/2023 10:19

You yummiest and mummies dont realise that actually Boris is very popular amongst normal voters. Reason.? He's not a fat cat above us politicians. He says it like it is.

The privileges committee is investigating whether Johnson misled Parliament, not his handling of Covid (separate investigation) or Brexit.

But he doesn’t “say it like it is” He constantly lies to you and you have fallen for it.

@Reic0003 Can you explain why Boris isn't to blame for attending his own birthday party and other illegal events and then lying about it?

Why did millions of children understand why they weren't having a birthday party, but the Prime Minister who introduced that law couldn't cope without his party?

If Johnson genuinely believed that he would be happy to take his chances with the people who twice chose him as their MP.

Johnson’s excuse is stupidity, which does suggest he didn’t have a clue what was going on, good or bad, and other people were doing all the work.

Are we defining normal voters as that small subset of voters than continue to be supportive of Boris?

Anyway. Yesterday you said you wanted a debate.
Could we perhaps then discuss why a 56 year old needed a birthday party, but had made it illegal for millions of children to do the same?

Starmer was not the PM responsible for making the rules & telling everyone else to follow them

Starmer voted for the rules and restrictions in the House of Commons - Corbyn voted against.

The rules at the time of the "Curry gathering" were different from those at the time of partygate.

The rules for Boris Johnson's birthday and 'beergate' were quite similar - six people could meet outside. Starmer made a performance of posing for socially distanced photos (outside in the cold, wearing a thick coat) the evening before Durham - and then had a cosy beer and curry (inside) the following evening. One rule for Starmer - one rule for everyone else.

Starmer was campaigning at the time which was allowed
Starmer hadn't broken the rules whereas Johnson had

Nevertheless, Starmer didn't follow the guidance for constituency visits - which advised against indoor meetings (they was travelling from place to place) and the sharing of buffet-style food - Starmer said people came in and out of the kitchen to get food (buffet-style).

Dominic Cummings wasn't fined by Durham Police either - and yet he's mentioned up thread.

As I thought - your anger is somewhat enhanced by your political persuasion.
