The aptly named Cleverley was on the radio this morning. Oddly he seemed keen to tell us that the Prime Ministers plan to reduce inflation by the end of the year was to do with apprentices. No really he did.

In unsurprising news pausing parts of the HS2 project to save money will end up costing more if you pause it while inflation is high. There goes another £366 million.

Even Chris Mason (Beeb political editor) described Cleverly as "flailing" when asked what the government's plan for reducing inflation was.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2023 11:17

Incredibly glum on the Tory benches at the moment as they stare down an economic crisis.

Former Cabinet minister: “There is nothing now the party can do. We can't change leader. He won't change policy. We're going to get absolutely annihilated at the election.”

"Flailing" is a polite version of saying um er apprenticeships over and over.

On LBC he was blaming it on the war in Ukraine

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/06/2023 11:19

They are just realising they are going to get annihilated now?

They obviously haven’t given Cleverly the correct media training in answering questions with STOP THE BOATS. Not to mention the fact the Rishi stood up in PMQs yesterday and said they were on track with reducing inflation.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2023 11:19

If anyone is interested, all The Thick of It episodes are on iPlayer

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/06/2023 11:23

Maybe, like President Bartlett he has a secret plan to fight inflation.

The very particular question he was asked repeatedly on Radio 4 was what the Prime Minister's plan was to reduce inflation, answer their came back none.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2023 11:37

Ah, I thought he was blaming it on aprrentices, my mistake.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2023 12:03

Interest rate increased by 0.5% to 5%

mibbelucieachwell · 22/06/2023 12:36

It seems no time since Jeremy Hunt was telling us he would halve inflationary and I was thinking he was taking us for fools as it would inevitably start to dive down after the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with its effect on energy prices anyway, regardless of what he did or didn't do. But no Confused

mibbelucieachwell · 22/06/2023 12:38

It's a shame for all those mp landlords who feel guilty about having to raise their tenants' rent.

I'm certain when they wrote that as a pledge they were confident inflation would reduce as you say, with energy and food prices coming down anyway, without them actually doing anything.

BBC Question Time tonight is a Brexit special with an audience of leave voters only,

There will be no government representative attending to answer questions.

It's going well with integrity and accountability,

Ben Habib was a Tory party donor until he became a Brexit Party MEP. Now a member of Reform he doesn't think the Tories are Brexity enough. So there will be a lot of flimflam about sinister Remainer forces ruining Brexit. #myBrexitgoestoadifferentschool

He actually said this

https://twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1671876256281903105?s=20

Rishi Sunak tells an IKEA worker, whose family is struggling to get treatment on the NHS, that he has a "really, really good plan" to solve the problem, which involves "being a bit clever about how we do things."

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2023 14:54

And this

https://twitter.com/Haggis_UK/status/1671876091169112064?s=20

Rishi Sunak tells the public not to panic about the interest rate rise because he's "totally 100% on it, & it's going to be okay.... "

Blossomtoes · 22/06/2023 14:57

What seems to me to mostly be being missed is that we are not in the 1970s. Businesses, particularly big businesses as well as individuals have far more borrowing than in the 1970s. Raising interest rates, increases businesses costs which will then get passed on to customers fueling inflation.

Sunak as ever is clueless.

the80sweregreat · 22/06/2023 15:18

It was a lot of word salad from Rishi Sunak today
I tried to follow it all , but I admit maths and economics are hard for me to grasp at times
He budgets for his swimming pool, although he didn't say that. Bringing his own household situation into it probably wasn't a good idea.
Meant to make us feel better I suppose!

tobee · 22/06/2023 15:18

Back to the "they're all as bad as each other" mantra is that it encourages people to disengage with politics and certainly be less likely to put themselves forward to stand for any political office or work in politics.

We need more and more people doing it so the seed can be sorted from the chaff. We don't want all chaff; those who find activism in politics a good way to personal prosperity. Those who are low calibre. We need as much good quality seed as possible.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2023 15:54

I've seen a rumour on Twitter that Truss will have her honours list published on 20th July - coincidentally the same date as 3 by-elections and just as Parliament closes for recess.

Disgraceful if true although I guess we are sadly becoming all to used to disgraceful behaviour from Downing Street.

As I say it's a rumour & I can't find a source but something to look out for.
