All he ever had to do was respond honestly and apologetically when questions were first asked.
It would have made news. He would have had to absorb a few hits.
There may well have been an investigation.
But a different attitude and a bit of humility and the news would have moved on.
The initial lies, compounded over and over, dragging more and more people in to its orbit until it ate itself.

He has brought every moment of this on himself.

Seems pretty ridiculous that Allegra Stratton ever had to resign.

The DM on Johnson, 'In a statement this morning, he dismissed the findings as 'tripe' and 'deranged', saying the committee was 'beneath contempt' and part of a 'protracted political assassination'.

Seems like a good day to remember all the previous times Johnson has tried to squirm his way out of previous lies and failures.

If in doubt double down.

I’m supposed to be working but hahahahahahahahaha

90 days. No wonder he resigned.

Roussette · 15/06/2023 10:34

He is his own worst enemy. He cannot show any humility or think he is wrong, so as said he has bought this all on himself

A couple of his party have come out supporting him but they are fools as well

Brendan Clarke-Smith is one of them.

He should be careful not to impugn the committee.

Notonthestairs · 15/06/2023 10:46

Clarke-Smith is one of the 2019 intake and thus wedded to Johnson.

Has Gullis spewed anything out yet?

tobee · 15/06/2023 11:09

That's might seem like a small thing but, to me, it's all part of the problem, the BBC News presenter just now, interviewing BBC correspondent Nick Eardley, twice referred to the former PM as "Boris". I mean, my god, who else would they say that about?? Staggering.

newnamethanks · 15/06/2023 11:21

It's really bad. That's good in my eyes. About bloody time too. My 21 year old grandson said to me the other day "We've been talking about Johnson since I was 14 and still at school". This will add to his birthday celebrations. Have this on me Bozo🍰

That's what makes this so beautiful. He chose it for himself.

the80sweregreat · 15/06/2023 11:37

So last Friday's resignation was damage limitation.
I'm surprised they let him see it before it became public knowledge as that must have known what he would do!

Blossomtoes · 15/06/2023 11:40

If this is damage limitation I dread to think what unlimited damage would look like. 😂

Roussette · 15/06/2023 11:40

Yes. My DCs are agog and horrified by it all. The Tories have lost their generation I feel, they know no one in their huge social and work circles who doesn't treat the Tory party with absolute disdain.

How could the normal cheerleaders on here defend him?
They can't. Except to disparage parliamentary process and what it stands for. Democracy

Blossomtoes · 15/06/2023 11:41

How could the normal cheerleaders on here defend him?

They can’t. That’s why they’re conspicuous by their absence.

IClaudine · 15/06/2023 11:51

They will be back, once they have decided on tactics.

DuncinToffee · 15/06/2023 11:54

Vote confirmed for Monday - Boris Johnson's birthday.

Three years since the birthday party for which he was fined.

Mordaunt confirms it will be a amendable and free vote on Mon. Urges colleagues to read report. Says it will be a "painful and sad process" but "all of us must do what we think is right and must be left alone to do so" (if you had any doubt of the Tory civil war opening up)

Just watched her epic take down of Thatcher and all her works. A brilliant actor and great humanitarian, she’s a huge loss.

They will be back, once they have decided on tactics.

Will they accept the party line which is likely to be to accept the report, or will they go rogue and continue with the Boris fandom?

Surely the big question of the day.

Very sad to learn of this news.

tobee · 15/06/2023 12:23

Boris Johnson will, presumably, true to form, say he wasn't "complicit in the campaign of abuse and attempted intimidation of the committee" either.

Notonthestairs · 15/06/2023 12:26

There should be an investigation into the abuse that the Commitee members have suffered. We can't expect politicians to stick their heads over the parapet if we are not prepared to defend them.

I have just absolutely by coincidence whilst reading Theodore Dreiser learnt a new word today and the timing is brilliant...

tergiversation noun /ˌtɜːdʒɪvəˈseɪʃn/
/ˌtɜːrdʒɪvərˈseɪʃn/[uncountable, countable] (formal)

  1. the act of making statements that deliberately hide the truth or that avoid answering a question directly

How apt.

Misdirection deployed by Johnson, his MP friends and his wider supporters that would make Derren Brown proud.
