Apparently my children have never had a proper holiday

According to my SIL anyway
Every year we take them to eurocamp (or similar) We take the eurotunnel and have traveled all over France, Italy Netherlands Germany. We stay in a chalet and have wonderful holidays, swimming biking exploring and much more. Our kids are great in the car so it's all no bother and we have a great time.

But no apparently it's only a holiday if you get on plane and stay in a hotel. I'm utterly baffled.

Is this the first indication you've had that she's a fool?

First comment nailed it to be fair.

My kids have never been on holiday by her standards then.

thimblgattle167 · 06/06/2023 12:52

I actually laughed at her. I thought she was joking. But no she feels sorry for my kids

Thats worse than people claiming its only a "staycation" if its within the UK.

A holiday is going away somewhere for the purpose of relaxation.

SBAM · 06/06/2023 12:55

Gosh, your poor deprived children, to have only been on multiple holidays around Europe where they’ve no doubt seen all sorts of things and experienced all sorts of places.

Your SIL sounds a bit hard-of-thinking.

Dragonsandcats · 06/06/2023 12:55

That’s weird. Presumably a cruise wouldn’t count either as that’s just a boat ride?

sherbertyellowteddy · 06/06/2023 12:56

Mine have never been on holiday either then. We caravan in the UK. They've never been on a plane. We go multiple times a year. Kids love it.
When I was a kid my parents had a similar mindset, you had to fly somewhere on holiday. So we only went away every 3 years because of the cost.

Might count if you flew to somewhere else then get on the cruise. Grey area though

Your SIL is an idiot. Your kind of holiday sounds very appealing, can I tag along next time? 😅😆

SortOfLikeAnOctopusOnlyMoreBlocky · 06/06/2023 13:02

I only recently learned that I never had any holidays as a kid. Poor deprived me only got to go on 'staycations' apparently. Best start the kids in therapy now, Op 🤣

But then you would have a baggage restriction. No luggage restrictions on cruises you take from the UK.

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 06/06/2023 13:03

Oh dear, forget my kids, I've never been on a proper holiday in my life by her standards!

She sounds jealous and obnoxious.
don’t worry about her. You’re doing amazingly

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 06/06/2023 13:04

I actually don't know many people who take their kids to a hotel. Even if they fly they tend to either get a villa, or do eurocamp etc.

thimblgattle167 · 06/06/2023 13:05

She kept saying. Of course it's a holiday it's just not a "proper holiday" (finger quotation marks)

As so often happens.

70sTomboy · 06/06/2023 13:09

I've only had 2 holidays in 56 years then...
Glad you laughed OP, only reasonable response to stupidity.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 06/06/2023 13:10

I don’t understand people who take young children to hotels for more than a night or two. Families need their own space. Your hols sound amazing.

Ellicent · 06/06/2023 13:13

What an idiot - you have holidays! Plenty of people don't even manage that. It sounds like you know just what your family needs to have a great time away.

I would say - and it shouldn't be the case - but there is a point where kids become aware that they haven't ever been on a plane and their peers have and it can become something they can be picked on for ... 'X hasn't even ever been on a plane!' - they can feel like they're missing out. At some point, almost just to tick the box and also show them planes are interesting for 10 minutes and boring for 5 hours - I'd suck it up and go on a plane journey. They can be extremely cheap if you use a little bit of nous - especially given what we're all paying for petrol!! - so no need to break the bank at all. Just maybe something to have in the back of your mind on the growing up tick box list.

On the flip side, if you do encounter any snobbery about not going on planes, you can definitely play the environment card and attribute some of the decision to that! I truly think in a decade or so we'll all have to radically assess our use of planes and take alternative means which are slower and become part of the holiday.

In summary: you do go on proper holidays already!!

FlamingoQueen · 06/06/2023 13:13

I bet her children (assuming she has them) don’t have as much fun or freedom as your children. It’s worrying that people think like that - she must upset lots of people!

PuttingDownRoots · 06/06/2023 13:13

According to your sister which of these were holidays?

A) flying and staying with relatives
B) driving and staying in a hotel
C) driving and camping

And last week, DDs and DH drove to Germany, met with friends who had flown from Czechia, and they all camped. Was that a holiday for all of them, some of them or none of them?

Alargeoneplease89 · 06/06/2023 13:15

Probably the same sort of person who says giving your children books isn't a proper present 😂

YukoandHiro · 06/06/2023 13:16

Hope you managed to get in a little dig saying "oh god my kids are active people, they'd be absolutely bored out of their minds sitting on a beach for a week"
