Apparently my children have never had a proper holiday

According to my SIL anyway
Every year we take them to eurocamp (or similar) We take the eurotunnel and have traveled all over France, Italy Netherlands Germany. We stay in a chalet and have wonderful holidays, swimming biking exploring and much more. Our kids are great in the car so it's all no bother and we have a great time.

But no apparently it's only a holiday if you get on plane and stay in a hotel. I'm utterly baffled.

Your SIL is a prize cow. Your hols sound ace.

Hollyppp · 06/06/2023 16:27

How bizarre, she’s odd

RedToothBrush · 06/06/2023 16:44

Holly60 · 06/06/2023 15:47

Does she mean I.e a real break to just do nothing and chill?

Rather than saying it's less than, it's just a different experience. And in her opinion one is a proper holiday as it's a chance to literally sprawl on a sun lounger doing nothing? So a 'proper break' if you like?

What is the point in a holiday where you do fuck all?

(Yes I know some people like this, but thats the point. Others would die of boredom).

Ellie56 · 06/06/2023 16:46

What a very stupid SIL you have.

According to the OED a holiday is

"a time or period spent away from home or travelling as a form of leisure or recreation; a journey or excursion undertaken during such a period."

holiday, n. : Oxford English Dictionary

The OED is the definitive record of the English language, featuring 600,000 words, 3 million quotations, and over 1,000 years of English.

Bang on. And only ever twice. Her kids are early teens

I could have guessed this. What a vacuous twat.

‘Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.’

Scottishskifun · 06/06/2023 16:53

Ah the it's not a holiday unless it's an all inclusive club!
I like a bit of both so we ski but in catered chalets and when we go away we get an apartment but b&b or half board so we have the choice and a hire car so we can go explore!

My DS1 favourite holidays though are in our campervan an hour down the road!

AgathaX · 06/06/2023 17:14

What a narrow little mind your SIL has. It's causing her to miss out on so much potential fun.

changeyerheadworzel · 06/06/2023 17:19

My kids have never had a holiday without a plane or a hotel and I am feeling MINE have never had a proper holiday having read what yours consist of OP. Your holidays sound amazing and what i would have loved to do had I had the balls! SIL is a gobshite.

AxolotlEars · 06/06/2023 17:19

My adult kids have only had about 3 then. The youngest none at all. Shame on me! 🤣

Minesril · 06/06/2023 17:31

Lots of snobbery about hotels on this thread. I love hotels. So do DC. The hotel we stayed in in Rome had cake at breakfast 😁

Camping is my idea of hell.

Minesril · 06/06/2023 17:32

Also: I couldn't do camping even if i wanted to due to lack of cars. So a nice hotel not far from the station it is, then...

HomeB · 06/06/2023 17:33

Your SIL is narrow minded but so are the many posters slagging off hotel holidays. Like this,

"Hotels are wasted on small children"

Of course they're not. What a strange thing to say. My kids have had every type of holiday I can think of and all we're suitable and fun in their own right.

I thought that. Snobbery and nastiness, interestingly exactly what SIL is being like . .

We just got back from a lovely AL where we fed loggerhead turtles, Turkish bath, cooking class, paragliding, jet skis, snorkelling, visited the tombs on the Dalyan River, mud baths and the local markets to name just some of the things we did. We also had a few days where we did nothing other than slob around the pool and slope off for a massage and ice cream. I didn’t realise this made us uncultured swines 😂

I thought both types of holiday were lovely holidays, my mistake.

Oh, what were the Dalysn tombs like???

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 06/06/2023 17:48

This reminds me of my older sister who regularly took her kids to Florida every year.
We could only afford to camp in Uk,.but made the most of it, l love the outdoors, and sons loved it. It's a kind of snobbery, but l still have good memories and at least we didn't have our luggage stolen at airport.

Why was I roaming around Wales with my kids chucking 3 grand about last week? Some sort of punishment? Your SIL is a twat.

Yes, unbeknownst to yourself you were subjecting your children to a Welsh-themed form of penance for wrongs committed in a past life.

sadsack78 · 06/06/2023 17:55

I grew up having both types of holidays, and as a kid, the cycling/ exploring ones were an absolute blast and the ones I remember most fondly.

Really nice, can’t go in obviously but you can take a small boat to in front of them. And there’s a tour guide who gives you the whole history etc. It was really interesting finding out who owned what back in the days of Byzantium/Constantinople etc. There’s a big archeological dig going on where they found dwellings with the same name as on the biggest tomb.

We went for lunch after on one of riverside docks and there was Turkish dancing, a great day!

I personally don't like staying in hotels for holidays and would prefer s/c (either cottage/apartment/camping/caravan) but I'd never assume someone's holiday was less of a holiday for being in a hotel, and I'd defend my caravan holiday as a proper holiday to anyone who questioned it.
Before kids we did a few trekking/walking holidays in mountains etc but I'm not sure I'd want to stay in a hut with 10 strangers any more and my DD would definitely object if I mooted that as a holiday!
I think anything is a proper holiday if the person that actually went describes it as such!

Hidingawaytoday · 06/06/2023 18:22

We're flying to a eurocamp this year... does that count?? 🤔
