Apparently my children have never had a proper holiday

According to my SIL anyway
Every year we take them to eurocamp (or similar) We take the eurotunnel and have traveled all over France, Italy Netherlands Germany. We stay in a chalet and have wonderful holidays, swimming biking exploring and much more. Our kids are great in the car so it's all no bother and we have a great time.

But no apparently it's only a holiday if you get on plane and stay in a hotel. I'm utterly baffled.

For why though? I can see you’re determined to derail the thread with your moody bums.

Try some suncream and a holiday 😂

No you are managing the derailing... I'm just replying to it.

Happy to wind you up too.

Fair enough, sounds a sad life enjoying ‘winding up’ strangers on the internet. But I’ll leave you to it.

'sad life'.

Yep that's me all over.

Crack on with the insults.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 06/06/2023 20:29

So is it only a proper holiday if you create a massive carbon footprint?

She is being ridiculous, and yes the early reply nailed it .

By her standards I never had a proper holiday as a child/teen I would have hated it and my kids have truly suffered they would hate it too .. Woe is us 😀

sugarplumhairy · 06/06/2023 20:47

Is this due to other dc thoughts on holiday. Embarrassingly I would feel the same... we have a few breaks a year but the one where we get on the aeroplane is THEE holiday. But that's because we all get a bit excited about planes.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/06/2023 21:39

This is a really individual thing but I personally prefer apartments or villas or even Eurocamp chalet type holidays with young kids, as I like the space - we had a doomed holiday in Egypt (all got amoebic dysentry) and were in one room when son was10- after that there were no more one room type holidays!!!

Fedupwitheveryone · 06/06/2023 21:41

Well obviously your SIL is right - because nothing says fun like a modern budget economy air travel experience ;-)

Is this the first indication you've had that she's a fool?

No really isn't. We aren't very close as we are very different people but normally rub along ok. I found the comment more funny than hurtful. I think she felt silly as she tied to explain it

Is your SIL always this stupid or did she take lessons for that?

Moonshild · 07/06/2023 18:21

Everyone has their own ideas about 'down time/holidays' - since getting divorced I have either been to festivals with groups of friends or gone to stay at other peoples - for me this is a perfect holiday as I get to listen to live music, spend time with my friends and not worry about cooking, cleaning or work! My parents would agree with your SIL but its my life - ignore her

Snippit · 07/06/2023 18:25

Your holidays sound fabulous. We’ve done both, flying and car through Europe, and the car journeys are much more fun. You see so much more, we love them, especially when you get lost 😝

Could she be a tad jealous of your adventurous nature?

MrsPetty · 07/06/2023 18:34

Your SIL is not alone in her thinking. I was asked by a friend recently if I’d ever consider a ‘proper holiday’. I have taken my DDs on all inclusive package deals, Disney etc but I much prefer home exchanges and independent type travel … I suppose people just perceive holiday’s differently.

Sensibletrousers · 07/06/2023 18:52

If it’s not a holiday, then what is it??

KnittingSister · 07/06/2023 19:30

holiday
/ˈhɒlɪdeɪ,ˈhɒlɪdi/

noun

  1. 1.
  2. BRITISH
  3. an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home or in travelling.
  4. "I spent my summer holidays on a farm"

Dictionary definition 😁

Yvetty · 07/06/2023 19:31

PuttingDownRoots · 06/06/2023 12:52

Thats worse than people claiming its only a "staycation" if its within the UK.

A holiday is going away somewhere for the purpose of relaxation.

Yes, I completely agree with you. I hate the attitude that you have to go (on a plane) abroad to have a ‘real’ holiday.

OP, your SIL is rude!

KnittingSister · 07/06/2023 19:33

My MIL says the same, she was so glad that more recently we've been able to go on 'proper' holidays abroad. Our weeks in Cornwall, north, south, west, mid Wales, Lakes, Scotland don't count 🙄

letsallmeetupinthehyear2000 · 07/06/2023 19:33

Personally I loathe hotels - think it may be because of our very free and happy family caravan holidays - as a kid I loved the freedom and our little home from home - usually in beautiful locations next to a beach or on top of a mountain. Saw loads of castles and countryside and seasides - all in uk - never got in a plane till I was 19

azlazee1 · 07/06/2023 19:44

Your holidays sound wonderful and are great experiences for your kids. Ignore your SIL .

Plunger · 07/06/2023 20:23

Our children look back at their holidays with eurocamp with great enjoyment with the freedom they had and few restrictions. Tell SIL to get a life. Ask her to define a 'holiday'. If it simply involves a plane journey suggest going from gatwick to southern 🤣

Mumlifeofboys · 07/06/2023 20:34

Spot on haha! 🤣

motherofawhirlwind · 07/06/2023 21:40

I've never been on holiday then. Off to ring my mum to complain...
