Apparently my children have never had a proper holiday

According to my SIL anyway
Every year we take them to eurocamp (or similar) We take the eurotunnel and have traveled all over France, Italy Netherlands Germany. We stay in a chalet and have wonderful holidays, swimming biking exploring and much more. Our kids are great in the car so it's all no bother and we have a great time.

But no apparently it's only a holiday if you get on plane and stay in a hotel. I'm utterly baffled.

My mum still feels sorry for her nephews - due to her Sister in law, they grew up up without having 'a proper holiday'. They went to places 'not by the sea' - lake District, Switzerland, Holland, Iceland and apparently had a miserable time doing epic long walks with no ice creams.

Our annual fortnight by a hotel pool with two days car hire to 'see the sights' mostly involved my pale skinned, ginger haired brother getting sunburnt and seeing the hotel doctor about heat stroke whilst my parents slathered on the factor 5 and switched to oil in the second week.

My mum continues to wonder if my kids would enjoy a fortnight sunbathing rather than all those crowded, European cities we try and visit. (We live by a beach in Cornwall)

My mum is a bit thick but mostly insecure & unpleasant.

I actually laughed at her. I thought she was joking. But no she feels sorry for my kids

It sounds like jealousy to me, or some weird dig to make you feel crap for some other bizarre reason. Ignore and note. She’s evidently quite unpleasant.

Picklewicklepickle · 06/06/2023 13:45

Hotels are wasted on small children

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 06/06/2023 13:47

It's a sil thing. My holidays don't count either according to her as we holiday in the UK. She can keep her crowded airports!

Thats worse than people claiming its only a "staycation" if its within the UK.

A holiday is going away somewhere for the purpose of relaxation.

It is only a staycation if it's within your home country........

Oh its brilliant. Loads of choice of accommodation, and park sizes. Prices vary a lot. But generally lovely and clean, well placed to visit local attractions. Will say though in my experience it's normally better to have a car with you.

Normally great swimming pool and restaurants. My kids always make loads of holiday friends.

Yes, we had quite a few eurocamp holidays when our two were younger - great caravans, pools, play areas - we always took the car so we could travel further. Our favourite was Berny Rivière near Compiegne, just over an hour from Disney. We had some great ones in zBrittany and on the Vendee as well.

Your sister is an idiot.

Thanks! I thought they looked good but had relatives who had been 40 years ago 🤔 who said it was shit and I said I thought it had probably changed in that time 😂

She's jealous of your happiness

Fundays12 · 06/06/2023 13:50

As a child I went on holidays abroad staying in hotels and on Eurocamp holidays. Eurocamp by far were the best holidays with the most amazing memories

Maray1967 · 06/06/2023 13:51

Apologies to your sister if you have one - meant SIL!

Lemonyyy · 06/06/2023 13:52

Lol, just spent a week on a UK holiday and my kids insisted it was their best holiday ever (as they usually claim on every holiday lol) I'll have to let them know they're deprived 😂your SIL sounds pretty narrowminded and dull tbh. Nothing wrong with a hotel but I love doing something different each holiday to experience different things and see new places!

I might check out eurocamp for next summer, thank OP!

frozendaisy · 06/06/2023 13:52

You are not jealous enough of her plane holidays OP.

Bad OP.

What is the point in a holiday if it doesn't inspire envy?

Is this the first indication you've had that she's a fool?

perfect. The rest of us have nothing to add tp this wisdom

HoleyShit · 06/06/2023 13:54

Honestly I don't think I could even muster a response to her idiotic way of thinking.

I feel sorry for her husband and kids.

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/06/2023 13:55

So if you drive/take train to the Alps and spend a week skiing that's not a holiday?

I wish I'd known, I could have claimed not to have had any holidays in years to my ridiculously competitive long suffering ex-colleagues...

And if you fly for business, is that then a holiday?

This is getting complicated...

Fizbosshoes · 06/06/2023 13:59

To be fair on several MN threads there is a contingent who think staying in the UK "is not a proper holiday"
I've seen it several times.
And lots saying its usually cheaper to go abroad which I'm often dubious about!

justprance · 06/06/2023 14:05

Holy moly. My kids have never had a proper holiday either then! Shit!

First post nails it!!

Absolem76 · 06/06/2023 14:11

She sounds crazy if course its a holiday. Even if you stayed in this country it's a holiday. The definition of a holiday isn't a plane ride!

Exactly!

Some folk are just fucking weird. Your SIL is one of them Grin

My DP’s ex wife told me that we were “cruel” because we only took their kids away for a week to Spain, not two. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head.

Utterly batshit! Poor poor deprived children Grin

Lwrenagain · 06/06/2023 14:17

What a dick.

She'd die at my holidays, i get a pontins groupon deal.
Last time we went I met a family I kept thinking they were familiar. They'd be on Jeremy Kyle 🤣 they were ace, we had a blast 😂😂

Um no. A staycation means you're in your own actual house, maybe going for day trips. Maybe not.

If I live in London and go to Cornwall for a week, that's not a 'staycation'. It's a holiday.
