DP doesn't get poo cramps

addler · 02/06/2023 12:00

What's wrong with him? What's wrong with his body?

I'm not the weird one, right? Most people if they eat something their body doesn't entirely agree with get a crampy-feeling until it's all out right? Mine is after anything with too much dairy or fish and chips/other greasy takeaways.

He thinks he's the normal one and I'm the odd one. But I've never heard of anyone just not having poo cramps?! Are there people who just... need to have a poo? And that's it? Every time?

As I make yet another trip to the toilet I am awash with envy. Also I should probably just stop eating chocolate. Hmm

I would ask for a coeliac test

DeliciouslyDecadent · 02/06/2023 14:52

IBS is a diagnosis after elimination (no pun intended.)

@addler Ideally you should have your poo analysed (for any blood) and maybe a colonoscopy. But it's more likely to be food intolerance. You could try omitting dairy for two weeks first to see if that helps. Use either plant milks or just omit it (2 weeks is fine.)

DeliciouslyDecadent · 02/06/2023 14:55

It could be IBS or diverticular disease , Crohns, or coeliac. Blood tests can rule out some of this.

The fact you have low B12 suggests you are not absorbing minerals and vitamins which can happen if your bowel / intestine isn't working properly.

porridgeisbae · 02/06/2023 14:55

Multiple generations of women in my family all have frequent stomach pains related to defecation.

@Ponderingwindow Is it part of constipation? Women do tend to have constipation more often than men.

TonTonMacoute · 02/06/2023 14:58

Totally agree with PPs, cramps not normal and you should look into this further because IMHO, there is nothing - and I mean absolutely nothing else on earth - that is more underestimated than a satisfactory bowl movement. You need to experience this OP!

TedMullins · 02/06/2023 14:58

Depends what kind of cramps you mean – it sounds like you're describing upper/mid abdominal pain? Having that every day definitely isn't normal. I sometimes get pain and bloating but I do have IBS, it's not every day though. But I also get this sensation in my lower abdomen/colon area which I wouldn't describe as a pain, but it's a kind of sharp feeling of the poo moving into the rectum ready to come out, if that makes sense? I thought that was normal but my partner says he doesn't get that either!

TonTonMacoute · 02/06/2023 14:58

*bowel movement obvs (bloody autocorrect)

Theladyinluna · 02/06/2023 15:04

Try the FODMAP diet OP. And yes it’s you.

JusthereforXmas · 02/06/2023 15:06

What your describing can either be food poison or allergy/intolerance... its you not him.

I have intolerances to lots of things (all linked to the same base protein but its in like half of all food) and I only get cramps in very severe cases (where I directly ate the item not just contamination). Usually with cross contamination I just get REALLY loud growling/gurgling that wont stop (its pretty embarrasing).

If it is an intolerance and you are reacting to repetitively eating something then be careful as the cramps/noise is litrally damage being done, if you lose the ability to absorb nutrient correctly through damage/scarring you can become deficant and in worst cases die.

I am confused as to why you think its normal though, I stopped eating most my 'triggers' as a baby (I wasn't diagnosed until much later, was lable a 'picky' child for years but I would litrally starve and dropped severely underweight as a child instead eating things that triggered it). If something hurts your meant to be wise enough not to eat it again as an adult with logical thought you should realise that.

HideTheCroissants · 02/06/2023 15:08

Only if I ingest artificial sweeteners…..

Riverlee · 02/06/2023 15:08

I rarely get cramps and usually only if a food has disagreed with me. The best description I can give is a sensation down below, maybe pressure or a feeling of heaviness. Plus I’m fairly regular, and usually ‘go’ within an hour of breakfast.

Topseyt123 · 02/06/2023 15:16

I have IBS! Poo cramps are part and parcel of it but that doesn't mean it is normal and everyone gets them..

I've had IBS for as long as I can remember, certainly since my teenage years. It was exacerbated badly by a serious thyroid disorder some years ago but that is now under control. It did get better but has never gone away. I still get it.

I am always insanely jealous of anyone who does not get poo cramps and can trust their bowels not to let them down, especially in public. They are normal though and can go out and about with confidence. I am not so lucky.

I control mine as much as possible with loperamide (prescribed by my doctor). It is sold over the counter as immodium. It does help me, but I can never, ever be 100% confident.

Get a doctor's appointment. You need to discuss this and check that no obvious cause can be found.

addler · 02/06/2023 12:22

I don't actually think I've talked to that many people about it, I just assumed it was normal. My twin is also the same, so maybe there's a genetic link.

I do have a lot of unexplained vitamin deficiencies, my GP kept asking me if I was vegan because of my B12 and iron levels even when I would repeat I wasn't.

I'm actually glad I started this thread as maybe if I can figure out what food in particular is causing it then I won't have to feel like this anymore.

It’s really good that starting a thread has prompted you to look into this. Gut pain isn’t normal, a bit of discomfort when you need to “go” is ok but not cramping pain after you’ve eaten. The link with specific foods shows something isn’t right and you say “yet another” so it sounds like you have excessive frequency and urgency too.

I have quite bad IBS and it’s horrible. Can I suggest you see a registered dietitian who specialises in this? It was a dietitian who diagnosed what was causing my IBS and sorted me out. There are many different causes. GPs over several years were no help whatsoever.

SpringleDingle · 02/06/2023 15:21

I go almost exclusively at 7:45am after my morning coffee and before my dog walk! It's a cramp free experience. Aside from Stomach bugs (less than once a year) or the very occasional bit of trapped wind that is painful for 5 minutes before producing a big fart my gut is ouch free. It is you and likely to be IBS :(

SamPoodle123 · 02/06/2023 15:48

Not normal for me. Perhaps for some people it is? Or if you have an intolerance?

FuckingHateRats · 02/06/2023 15:51

I used to get this. I was then diagnosed coeliac and now I don't, unless I've accidentally been glutened, and then it's back and awful. I was also very deficient in certain vitamins and minerals before diagnosis.

Please get checked out.

YouJustDoYou · 02/06/2023 15:55

I've never heard of "poo cramps". Dh has never heard of "poo cramps". Even my kids don't get "poo cramps".

behaveasbefitsthesituationwillyas · 02/06/2023 15:57

I don't get them when I eat heathily, like a lot of vegetables. I do get them when I've eaten a lot of crap, like instant noodles and the like.

TrappedInSlothBody · 02/06/2023 15:57

If I need to go but am not near a loo, and therefore cannot attend to business - waiting a long time can make me feel quite crampy.

Is that normal? I always thought that was normal!

ejbaxa · 02/06/2023 16:00

I shit when I need to shit and no cramps are involved. Well, unless you count the time I had norovirus.

MooMooSharoo · 02/06/2023 16:02

mintbiscuit · 02/06/2023 12:30

IBS suffer here and poo cramps are real!

Yup... different levels...

  • grumble grumble, twinge... ooh, OK, that's OK.
  • GRUMBLE GRUMBLE, bigger twinge... ooh-er, OK, probably should make sure there's a bathroom nearby
  • ROOOAAAR GRUMBLE + cramps = Make way, make way, coming through!

IBS + Period Poos are a bastard too.

I do realise the IBS grumbles/cramps are not normal though! Sorry OP!

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 02/06/2023 14:30

But by the first time you posted, telling OP that it was part and parcel of everyday life and there was no need to go running off to the GP, she had already said that she was in pain every day and had had consistently low B12 and iron levels.

Sure, that's not enough to diagnose IBS specifically, but it absolutely is NOT part and parcel of everyday life and it absolutely DOES suggest a visit to the GP.

MN does have functonality where you can click to see all the OP's posts on a thread to date before you comment on it.

Yes I'm aware, but hadn't seen that when I responded. Wasn't keeping up. 🙌

Besides which, I wasn't specifically talking about OP, but more myself and other posters saying they get the odd cramp.

Most peopke know when something is an issue that needs investigation or not.

Some posters who just get the odd cramp are thinking they now have IBS because of this thread. That is also a bit ridiculous.

I'm not going to run to the Dr for the occasional cramp after eating something that is causing me no other 'issues'.

momtoboys · 02/06/2023 16:14

I only read the title of your post. Is this really what we have come to? For the love....😳

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 02/06/2023 16:19

What the hell are poo cramps?

BlockbusterVideoCard · 02/06/2023 16:24

I have known digestive issues for which I have had a lot of medical attention, and which are now pretty well controlled with diet, lifestyle and (when needed) medication. I very rarely get cramps even though my bowel habits are not entirely 'normal' even now.

Even when things weren't well controlled I didn't get them all the time!

I do have a family member who gets more cramps than I do and tends to go several days between bowel movements which is within the bounds of normal. Frankly in this case it's obviously a need for more fruit, liquid and fibre in their diet. Not saying this is why you do as you may have a disorder, but this is clearly why they do as they don't have any other issues than mild constipation which is longstanding.

There's something amiss with you anyway and the more serious things need ruling out first, so do a food and symptom diary for 2-3 weeks and then go to your GP.

IMHO there's little point going to your GP without this, unless you have major weightloss or acute severe onset of these symptoms or the symptoms listed for bowel cancer on the NHS website, which it doesn't sound like you do. In which case go as soon as you can.
