I'm going to sort out and tidy up every drawer and cupboard in my house. Want to join in?

This morning I woke up with a kind of itchy compulsion to sort and tidy every single drawer and cupboard in my whole house. I have no idea why but I'm snapping on my marigolds and reaching for the Zoflora.

I don't have a week or a fortnight off work to do one big blitz. I'm going a drawer or two at a time, and saving the big jobs (like under the stairs cupboard) for weekend days.

Today I've sorted out my two bathroom cupboards.
I've dumped all the old, out-of-date medicines, combined all my body cream remnants into one divine-smelling body lotion soup, re-positioned everything in order of actual use, and put everything on 'themed' shelves in one of the cupboards.

I've scrubbed the inside of the cupboards and they're now lemony fresh. Unfortunately, one of them's going a bit rusty and the other one is stained with Harpic 😯But they're clean and tidy.

I am very proud of myself and now rewarding my efforts with a caramel chocolate digestive.

Anyone want to join me? We can support each other, update on progress, perhaps share picture if you'd feel comfortable to do so.

Ooh can I join? I did one drawer in the bedroom and one cupboard in the kitchen yesterday. I feel like every single cupboard/drawer needs doing and would love to tackle it (and maintain it) over the summer.

tonight I’m going to do the cupboard under the stairs!

CamdenLurker · 30/05/2023 17:22

Oh I started this on Sunday!

Began with the drawers in our bathroom, continued onto the airing cupboard yesterday and now have a huge bag of blankets for the local dog shelter, I ordered a huge vacuum bag from Lakeland which arrived today and I've just finished loading all of the winter bedding into it ready for dh to put into the loft.

I have instructed dd's to clear out their shoe cupboard under the stairs this evening, My plan is to tackle the spare room next weekend which doubles up as a dressing room and office, so is full of all sorts of stuff, then move onto the kitchen cupboards and then the drawers of doom.

I find the prospect quite exciting, just need to make sure that I don't replace everything I get rid of with more of the same.

CrumbliestCrumble · 30/05/2023 17:35

Ive done this over the last few weeks. Inc the loft.
I wasnt a hoarder but there was stuff In wrong places or no longer used.
I did a room a day, and put work off till the evenings.
I wrote a list, each room what needs doing and ticked it off.
After half term is to clean all the pvc around the windows and skirtings then done, not that it'll last long.

If i have it in my head to do something i HAVE to do it. I don't sleep until i do.
Thankfully that's not often

Help needed!

I have washed, dried and sorted (half) of my spare bedding. I've then put it into those clear vacuum bags, put a tumble drier sheet in with it and sucked the air out. This has meant that the whole lot will fit in an ottoman at the foot of our bed and when I need winter bedding again it's all ready to go.

I'm now doubting the 'tumble drier' sheet - will I discover that it's melted goo onto my bedding or it all smells weird? I put it in cos I thought it would keep things fresh. Shall I open the bags, remove and suck the air out again?

Advice anyone?

Hmm, I'm not too sure. I don't see why the dryer sheets would melt or go gooey. But I guess they could stain the bedding a little bit.

If in doubt, take them out.

You don't want concerns about the state of your winter bedding popping into your head all summer long!

Welcome to new joiners!!

Shall we set a target?
How about we say the whole house done - every drawer and cupboard - done by Tuesday 18th July?

That gives us 49 days, including 14 weekend days.

You have inspired me, I've just sorted and cleaned the bathroom cabinet. I'm ashamed to say I've been meaning to do it for months and it only took me 20 minutes. FFS there's only me and DH in the house now since the kids left home and I'm still not organised.
Tomorrow I will start on the cupboards downstairs and this time I will take a picture before and after.

WateryDoom · 30/05/2023 20:19

@MaryCondom You are right - I'll take them out. I hate the fact that you can put clean bedding away and then when you want it later on it smells faintly musty and needs another wash before putting it on the bed.

I love this idea! I need all the motivation I can get.
I've just done the bookshelves in my bedroom. Somehow I've lost an entire series, lost three of my favourite books and found 4 random duplicates. How does this even happen? Tomorrow I'll tackle my office.

MaryCondom · 30/05/2023 21:31

Amazing progress on the bookshelves @SirenSays
Keep us posted on your office progress.

@WateryDoom If I vacuum bag stuff, I don't tend to always wash it when I get it out next 😳Sometimes, half a day on the line will do - especially if its autumn and a bit windy. I forgot that years and years ago I used dried herbs in a vacuum bag when we were moving house and the stuff in there came out smelling absolutely lovely. Your post reminded me, I might do it again this year.

@Recycledblonde YES, glad you're inspired. It's amazing how little time some of the smaller jobs can take, isn't it?! I just opened my tea/coffee cupboard and realised it'll only take me the time of a kettle boiling and a teabag brewing to sort it out. But its been accumulating stuff for months and months and months.

Are you including that drawer with loads of odd drawing pins, paper clips and lots of string all tied round things somehow, bits of old plastic from 'something', not sure what. Cellotape which has become brittle but at the same time leaked its glue over all the other things in there, which are by now unidentifiable.

Im not going in there

Blarn · 30/05/2023 21:37

I can't join in as I might find my wedding certificate and I paid £35 today to get a copy sent with next day delivery. I needed to renew my passport, paid that and then realised that the envelope marked 'marriage certificate' in my important docs folder was empty! Blush

alienslove · 30/05/2023 21:40

I think I'd like to join... I do a lot of thinking but have no motivation ever!!!

Yes, all the drawers. Including the drawer of doom.

All drawers are created equal.

No drawers left behind.

And all that.

So, yes, the something and everything and nothing drawer also needs sorting out. If you don't manage to dispose of many things from said drawer, that's okay as long as it gets tidied, you remind yourself of what's in there, and perhaps re-arrange the drawer so things are more logically positioned.

@alienslove Welcome. Enough talking, enough thinking, let's do it!

Tomorrow is the dog/medicine drawer. Not sure why they’re combined. It’s dog leads/worming stuff and antihistamine/painkillers plus random shit. It’s the random shit which needs sorting.

fluffyfluffybunny · 30/05/2023 21:45

I did every kitchen cupboard and drawer today! Including the massive under sink cupboard of doom which was full of cleaning stuff and so much random shit. I feel very satisfied now!

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 30/05/2023 21:48

I emptied a drawer into a cardboard box couple of weeks ago, to go through the stuff and throw it out. I have now started re-populating the empty drawer with different stuff, and still have a cardboard box full of the previous stuff...

I give up!!

This seems like a dangerous combination of stuff to keep together 😅I'd definitely end up taking a worming tablet in the middle of the night, groping for paracetemol.

@fluffyfluffybunny YES - Amazing work! I might tackle the under-sink drawer of hell tomorrow. I actually don't think it'll take that long.

@howdoesyourgardengrowinmay No, don't give up! Set yourself the task of tomorrow going through the cardboard box. Check in and keep us posted. We've got your back! You can do this.
