Are you close with your cousins?

If so, to what extent? Just interested in what is the norm as I reflect on my relationships with my own.

Do you never see them? See them once or twice a year? See them all the time and always up to date with their lives too?

I have over 10 first cousins. Wide age range over 30 years from youngest to oldest. Close to one now, but became close as adults

DustyLee123 · 25/05/2023 21:47

I have 7 cousins. One I haven’t seen for 45 years, one for 36 years, three for 33 years, and the other two I saw recently at a funeral.

DelurkingAJ · 25/05/2023 21:48

Not close. Very fond but no more. 30 year age range (we’re youngest) so little in common when growing up. My eldest cousins have grandchildren the age of my GC.

BonnieGlasses · 25/05/2023 21:48

I have eight cousins, haven't seen any of them in years. One set I vaguely know what's going on in their lives but only because my uncle tells my mum who insists on telling me!

hopefulsquirrel · 25/05/2023 21:50

Not close, no. My cousins on my dad’s side all live in America, are much older, we were never really in touch, I have no way to contact them and they aren’t on social media. I was close to the youngest two as a kid but haven’t seen them in years.

My cousin’s on my mum’s side also live abroad and we aren’t that close but are Facebook friends and have a WhatsApp group. Again we were close in childhood but haven’t seen them in years.

It’s sad really, I regret not being closer with them but we are so very different and have so little in common I don’t really know how to change it now.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 25/05/2023 21:51

Not at all, feel no connection to them.

Wineismybestfriend · 25/05/2023 21:52

There’s about 25 of us. Some scattered around the place. Some of us are in a group chat and meet every few months x

Ariela · 25/05/2023 21:52

My cousins all live a minimum 3 hours away, some as far as Australia.

I'm quite close to the one that lives nearest and shares the same birthday as me (nearest in age) but never see or hear from the rest (lots of them too!)

DustyLee123 · 25/05/2023 21:52

My kids never see their cousins either.

Maddy70 · 25/05/2023 21:53

I'm really close to my cousins. I don't see them very often but they are my go to if anything goes wri g and visa Versa.the love is strong. Far more than my siblings

Lesina · 25/05/2023 21:53

Close to one, the rest I’m friendly with

Frightenedbunny · 25/05/2023 21:53

I come from a large family. In total, I have approximately 30 cousins and around 15 second cousins. Im very close to my cousins on one side and see them like brothers and sisters to me. Never see the cousins off the other side as we don’t have that type of relationship.

Peterpiperpickedapeckof · 25/05/2023 21:54

Used to be very close friends with one and had a sad drifting apart which meant drifted from the clan.

meet at family parties and the like. Wish we saw more of eachother.

shivawn · 25/05/2023 21:55

We were close as kids but pretty much strangers now.

PinkMendinilla · 25/05/2023 21:56

Not close. I like them a lot but we just don't see each other regularly. Weddings etc.

DitherDother · 25/05/2023 21:57

I've got 2 on my Mum's side and dozens on my Dad's. I doubt I'd recognise any of them if I saw them in the street.

No rift or anything but we're geographically spread and no one's made the effort for years.

blankcanvas3 · 25/05/2023 21:57

i have two cousins, we're very very close. but we have made an effort to stay close as adults, think it helped that we spent almost everyday together as kids.

grumpycow1 · 25/05/2023 21:58

I have 18 first cousins and no idea how many second/third cousins etc. I’m relatively close with some of them but only see them a couple of times a year as our families are fairly spread out. Whereas my husband’s cousin we see a lot because they are local and we get on.

Cakeandslippers · 25/05/2023 21:58

I have 7 (they are all siblings) and am not close to any. A couple live abroad. A couple I may or not recognise if I saw them in the street. The other 2 were the only ones I invited to my wedding and I do speak to them from time to time though probably only see them once a year or less.

Letsdance8188 · 25/05/2023 22:00

Close as children, but I've not seen or spoken to any of them in years. They didn't even bother to turn up to my wedding.

StopFeckingFaffing · 25/05/2023 22:01

I am close to 1 on my cousins but rarely see the rest (majority not seen for many years and only realistically likely to see them in future at funeral of parents/aunts/uncles)

None live local to me

2chocolateoranges · 25/05/2023 22:01

I have 5 cousins. We were all really close growing up, we all grew up in the same village and went to the same schools. Fast forward many years I see 4 on special occasions eg weddings funerals, birthdays . My oldest cousin I speak regularly over WhatsApp and meet up at family occasions.

life is so busy, only one lives in the same town as me the rest live much further afield now.

Fandabedodgy · 25/05/2023 22:02

I have one cousin who lives abroad. In 5 decades I.

Have met her 5 times.

Ginola2345 · 25/05/2023 22:03

I only really like or get on really well with maybe two of them and ironically these two I see the least these two are on opposite sides of the family live furtherest away from me. One at the opposite end of the UK and the other in a mediterranean destination. I don’t see the other cousins often either only maybe accidentally but I don’t particularly like them and we have very little in common with each other.

My kids have 4 cousins one the eldest one their is absolutely no love lost and she is jealous of them and had always behaved nastily and made nasty and jealous comments to them. They quite like the other three cousins but rarely see them as two live over a hundred miles away and their is a big age difference and the other is the eldest cousins sister and again a big age difference.

Tarkan · 25/05/2023 22:03

I have 7 cousins on my dad's side and 2 on my mum's side. I'm close with them all I would say. Some at times have been almost more like siblings than cousins to me. I saw the ones on my dad's side at my uncle's funeral earlier this month and on my mum's side at another uncle's funeral in 2019. We live a couple of hours away from all my cousins so I don't see them as often as I used to when we lived closer.

I'm also friendly with some second cousins and a cousin of my cousins on my mum's side (I don't think there's an official term for this as we're technically not really related but we used to use "half-cousins").

We're all of a similar-ish age with me being around the middle age-wise.

DH's cousins are a different matter. He has some cousins who are ages with my parents and some more our age, he's close to some but not quite as close to others and there are a lot of them.
