About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

Mine is that I thought hamburgers were when the burger was made from pork, as opposed to beef burgers.

Over time, i have bought, probably, hundreds of rolls of cling film and foil. I have just found out that every pack has a pair of push in tabs, one at either end of the pack. These tabs hold the roll in place. WHY HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE?

Bloody hell. Only today I was farting about with some cling film trying to stop the feckin thing keep falling out of the box 🤦‍♀️

When I was younger I thought Timbuktu was a made up place and meant far away in space not an actual place in Mali. I was so convinced it was just in space that I still find it hard to believe!

I thought that too!

I only recently found out that you can soak dried figs in water and they’ll reconstitute. I’ve been chewing on them for years!

This thing in America called Superbowl, I thought it was a ten pin bowling competition.

I still don’t know what the Super Bowl is although I know it’s not bowling. Is it baseball?

I once asked my mum why God was sometimes called Peter… thanks Peter god/thanks be to god. But I was about 9.

I told my parents I wanted to go to Durham Uni because I like the West Country 😬

Portsmouth is an island city. Very nice it is too.

Here's one that might flush out a few misconceptions. One (and only one) of the following is an island - do you know which?

  • The city of Portmouth
  • Gibraltar

I think ifs Portsmouth, I’m sure I see the solent island signs when I go there!

I found out last year that the words to we wish you a merry Christmas are not 'Good tidings we bring to you and your king' but are 'to your kin'

After 30 years, I'll still be singing king

I was today years old when I learned timbuktu was a real place.

Up until late teens, I honestly believed Mexico was attached to Spain.

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/05/2023 22:27

I was convinced that Nuneaton was in Scotland. For ages. And this was whilst I lived in Warwickshire. It was a cause of much confusion that it used to get mentioned on Midlands Today.

Portsmouth on an island, Portsea (?), Gib isn't, it is joined onto Spain just by the airport!

BadNomad · 24/05/2023 22:27

I don't know how this happened, but I just found out today that Mount Everest is over by Nepal/China. I've seen so many movies, and read so many articles, yet for some reason my brain still thought it was in Europe.

If anyone has facebook there is a great man who does things I didn't know before I was 30 or before I was a dad and some are very interesting

bunchofforgetmenots · 24/05/2023 22:30

I assumed Brunel University was in Brunei (which like lots of pp I thought was in the Middle East 😂)

When my lovely Mum was a little girl attending church, they sometimes used to sing the hymn ‘Gladly the cross I'd bear'. For years she felt sorry for the poor bear called Gladly who was cross-eyed….

What?!?!?! Since when?!?!!! (Off to check Google maps…..)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/05/2023 22:33

I won't say how old I was bc truly embarrassing, but I had a medical appointment for a hip injury with an orthopaedic surgeon who asked me to show him where I typically felt pain. I pointed and said, In my bikini line here. He said, So right groin pain then? It took me a second to reply because I thought only men had a groin. When I went back to work I told a female friend and co-worker and much to my relief she was just as amazed as I was! 🤦‍♀️😂🤷‍♀️

mummydoris2006 · 24/05/2023 22:34

@TheChosenTwo I live in Skegness and can confirm when advertising for staff we have had numerous enquiries from people in Scotland presuming that's where it is because of the 'ness' part

I used to think that a testicle was a type of spider.

Do spiders have testicles? I know they have willies because MN told me they rub them over our washing.if Mumsnet said so, it must be truth.
