Also agree. We lived there for a few months while DH did a course as a part of his job. The place is impressive and overwhelmingly incredible in some ways, but ‘on the ground’ it’s not what you’d think from the photos.
The theft, burglaries, and pickpocketing was constant. Also victim blaming and lack of sympathy if any of these happen to you - foreigner, you didn’t shut all the shutters, didn’t feed the seatbelt through your handbag strap etc etc
We were very enthusiastic and daring on the whole - the only ones on the course to drive in the city, learn the language etc. But the constant hypervigilance made me ill in the end, though I only realised that when it was over.
Also, the plight of the ‘extra comunitari’ (illegal immigrants) bothered me a lot. In the suburbs every traffic light stop could mean someone trying to sell you tissues or dishcloths or wash your windscreen. So naive before going there.
