Another vote for Paris. Dirty with leery waiters. (This was years ago before they started rioting every w/e down the Champs Elysee )

Goa, not geared up for tourists and the hotel had a view of an oil terminal.

San Francisco, very expensive and windy +++

The Grand Canyon - just boring big orange hole.

What were you expecting the the Grand Canyon? I prefer the North Rim, quieter than the South Rim but a 200 mile drive to get there!

UnDruidlyWords · 20/05/2023 17:17

Padstow in around 1990. Every street and shop was absolutely rammed and just one giant queue of people shuffling from one spot to another. We had a pasty and then left. It was horrible.

This made me think of Subpar Parks (look it up on Insta) Grin

Really interesting read here!
It's often difficult to reconcile the fact that when you're on holiday in a foreign place with high expectations, the locals there are often living in poverty and you are their only source of income. Hence: Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt etc.
If you don't understand that Africa is a third world country and all that entails, go somewhere else!

BodgerLovesMashedPotato · 20/05/2023 17:18

Love these kind of threads, always good for a laugh 😁
"Hated Somewhere in Blah Blah country, it rained all the time. Meh! Horrible place"
As if it's the country's fault, I mean you can't help the weather 😁
Or "too touristy, blah!"
Hate to break it to you, but if you're on your holidays you're a tourist too and part of the problem 😁

Pisa

EndofDaze · 20/05/2023 14:37

Pisa. What a dump.

Like many places mentioned Pisa has one usp, after that it's just a small city where people live, work and have lives that are much the same the world over.

Tomeeornottomee · 20/05/2023 17:22

Venice for sure. It was really smelly, like sewage water everywhere. I wonder if anyone else has ever thought this 🤔

Disagree entirely. Absolutely loved Venice, no smell and the weather was amazing. We visited in Spring. To be fair I think it can vary depending on when you visit, low tides etc but it was perfect when we visited.

These threads are always the same

People slating clearly wonderful places because they didn't enjoy themselves due to one small detail.

Agree!

but also perplexing that people are surprised by something when they know exactly what it is before they go

a tower that leans - well yes - that’s what it is!

the Grand Canyon was just a “hole in the ground”…..again…… what part of that was surprising??

a little bit of research before you may save these people wasted time and money!

Cancun. So ugly what's been done to it.

Tulum is nicer, but that whole area has been wrecked to cater for the American market. We stayed in a lovely small resort in Tulum and hired a car to do our own sightseeing.

Twillow · 20/05/2023 17:25

Lourdes is the tackiest place I have ever been to.

Lollygaggle · 20/05/2023 17:26

Las Vegas , artificially lit rooms crammed with people obsessively feeding slot machines when it looks as if they have little cash to spare in the first place. All you can eat buffets that make you long for a plain , undressed green salad and a glass of tap water . The fastest growing city in the US but I wonder what sort of values a child growing up there will imbibe.

Munich but only during Oktoberfest. Much less fun than it sounds , very unlikely to get a seat in the beer halls without pre booking as part of a large group and a definitely threatening atmosphere as darkness falls. Also suspect some "racial profiling " going on as to who they let in the halls.

Anywhere where a cruise ship/ships have just disembarked . Crowded , noisy and rushed , visit after the crowds and enjoy.

Cinderellasfeatherduster · 20/05/2023 17:27

St Tropez. Ex-DH had a house there. Lovely but not worth all the hype.

Fudgewomble · 20/05/2023 17:28

The Lake District

girlswillbegirls · 20/05/2023 17:31

@evuscha Thanks very much.
As a Spanish person I always feel its so unfair to rate some places badly only because they look for a cheap holiday and don't bother to travel around. Thanks for taking the time to explore the lovely historical spots x

Eden Project
Took ages to buy ticket and get in.

Woman on till doing a hard sell and explaining all the ways of supporting it. Direct debit covenanting, No No but she worked through this long script.
It was three years ago and I still hate the memory.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/05/2023 17:34

Venice. John Cleese was right all those years ago…. more fucking gondolas.

HesterLee · 20/05/2023 17:35

I loved Bali but was there a good 10 years ago. I stayed in Sanur and would love to go back. I remember Ubud being incredibly busy but it was buzzy and interesting.

I was going to say the Grand Canyon, but maybe you, like me, looked at it in the worst way.

I stayed on the rim, looked in, and thought it was boring.

In retrospect, if I'd taken a helicopter ride over it, or hiked down to the Colorado River, I think it would have been a vastly different experience.

I did the helicopter ride. Tbh I barely remember it (the canyon) so I don’t think it could have been anymore special than your experience.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. Rome is an absolute shit hole.

Also agree. We lived there for a few months while DH did a course as a part of his job. The place is impressive and overwhelmingly incredible in some ways, but ‘on the ground’ it’s not what you’d think from the photos.

The theft, burglaries, and pickpocketing was constant. Also victim blaming and lack of sympathy if any of these happen to you - foreigner, you didn’t shut all the shutters, didn’t feed the seatbelt through your handbag strap etc etc

We were very enthusiastic and daring on the whole - the only ones on the course to drive in the city, learn the language etc. But the constant hypervigilance made me ill in the end, though I only realised that when it was over.

Also, the plight of the ‘extra comunitari’ (illegal immigrants) bothered me a lot. In the suburbs every traffic light stop could mean someone trying to sell you tissues or dishcloths or wash your windscreen. So naive before going there.

It hasn’t changed much 😀

I would have to say Monaco is the most underwhelming place I have been, although I agree about Eden Project.

Las Vegas is a bit like Disney for me, you have to approach it with a certain mindset and not stay too long.
